CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 3) WITH JOE IGNAZIO

CANFIELD, OH- The Canfield Cardinals soared to a thrilling victory this past Friday night, marking the first win of the Joe Ignazio era. The game, hailed as one of the most captivating of the season, showcased the tenacity and resilience of the Cardinals as they edged out their opponents in an overtime battle.

In his post-game reflection, Coach Ignazio praised his team for their standout performance and determination. “Our kids played their butt off and it was good to have one to build their confidence,” Ignazio said. The Canfield Cardinals showed significant improvement, adhering to the coach’s philosophy that the best teams grow leaps and bounds from week one to week two.

Special teams proved crucial, as the coach emphasized the importance of every phase of the game. “Young kids tend to think special teams are a playoff, and they’re absolutely not,” Ignazio remarked. The team almost faced a costly lesson, but their perseverance through two critical plays helped secure the victory.

Players like Angelo DeLucia and Enzo Coca stood out, both leaving indelible marks on the stat sheet. DeLucia, a defensive powerhouse, racked up multiple tackles and pressures on the quarterback, while Coca demonstrated versatility with significant contributions both offensively and defensively. His interception and blocked field goal in regulation were pivotal moments that propelled the Cardinals to overtime triumph.

Coach Ignazio’s leadership and ability to cultivate a competitive environment were evident throughout the game. Reflecting on the physicality and competitive nature ingrained in the team, Ignazio attributed it to his upbringing and the enduring tradition of Canfield athletics. “We’ve talked to our team about consistency,” he said, highlighting the repetitive practice and relentless work ethic that are key to building confidence.

As the Cardinals prepare for their next challenge against Homestead Falls, Coach Ignazio remains focused on fostering growth and maintaining high standards. “When we got back to the locker room, they presented me with the game ball, and that was special. But I told them right away, put that thing in the trash because it really is not about me,” Ignazio stated, underscoring his team-first mentality.

The victory serves as a significant springboard for the remainder of the season, with the team eager to continue their journey under Coach Ignazio’s guidance. As the Canfield Cardinals take to the field once more, the community’s support and the team’s dedication promise an exciting chapter ahead.

Off the field, the community spirit shines during the Canfield Fair week, a significant local event. Despite the fair’s allure, Ignazio ensures his team remains focused, allowing them to visit only post-game on Friday. “Try to stay away until after our game on Friday, and then they can go and enjoy it with their families,” he advised.
On a lighter note, Ignazio shared his own fair favorites, including corndogs and Strauss’s malt, a nostalgic treat from his childhood.

As the Canfield Cardinals prepare for their next challenge, the community’s support remains unwavering. Ignazio’s leadership and the team’s relentless drive promise an exciting season ahead.

CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JOE IGNAZIO

CANFIELD, OH-  The Canfield Cardinals have ushered in a new era with the appointment of Joe Ignazio as their new head football coach. Recently, Coach Ignazio sat down with DJ Yokley at Cocca’s Pizza in Canfield for the debut episode of the “Coach’s Corner” podcast to discuss his journey, his aspirations for the team, and what makes the Canfield community special.

Ignazio, who also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for the Canfield school district, is not new to the football scene. He brings with him a wealth of experience gleaned from an 18-year tenure at Boardman. His transition to Canfield, where he has resided since 2013, is a homecoming of sorts. In the interview, Ignazio emphasized the community’s unique spirit and his desire to offer his children the same environment he enjoyed growing up.
“This position was always about coming home. Canfield is special because of its community. Just like when I was a kid, our neighborhood is full of children playing outside, creating lifelong memories,” Ignazio shared.

During the episode, Ignazio also delved into the emotional moments shared with his team. In a move that underscores his commitment to fostering a strong, supportive environment, he recently involved the players’ families in the announcement of the new team captains. The community-driven initiative was met with excitement and joy, setting the tone for the season.

The Canfield Cardinals are not strangers to success, and Ignazio acknowledged the rich tradition of excellence that has been cultivated over the years. Naming past stars like Danny Inglis and Brock Lowry, he highlighted the importance of senior leadership and resilience. “Every year, Canfield finds a way to step up. We’re instilling in our players the values of character and physicality required to play our brand of football,” Ignazio stated.

The upcoming season opener against West Branch is on the horizon, and despite some early challenges like the temporary loss of key player Tyler Shera, Ignazio remains focused and optimistic. He expressed confidence in the training and conditioning of his team: “We want to be the most well-conditioned and physical team on the field, and this year will be no different.”

Ignazio’s reflections on his coaching journey and inspirations were particularly poignant. He credits his development to various mentors and colleagues, each leaving an indelible mark on his coaching philosophy. “I’ve been fortunate to work with some phenomenal coaches, and I try to take the best from each to benefit our players and impact their lives positively,” he reflected.

In closing, Ignazio expressed his excitement for the season and his gratitude for the community’s support. As he prepares to lead the Cardinals with focus and determination, it’s clear that he’s ready to uphold and elevate the Canfield football tradition.
