SWEENEY BLANKS BULLDOGS, DEVILS SWEEP SERIES

UNITY, OH- You may have thought that you’ve heard the last of Justin Sweeney following basketball season.

Think again.

Sweeney threw a shutout to lead Lisbon past East Palestine 1-0 on Wednesday.  The pitching was strong on both sides. Sweeney struck out four, while East Palestine’s Dalton Vance sat down seven.

Lisbon things moving in the first inning. Logan Bell drove in one when he singled.  That was all that was needed for the Devils on the day.  For EP, a single by Dan Bender in the sixth inning was a positive for East Palestine and the only hit on the evening for the Bulldogs.

Sweeney was the winning pitcher for the Blue Devils. He went the distance, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out four.  Vance took the tough-luck loss for East Palestine. He lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out seven and walking zero.

Offensively, Sweeney went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Lisbon in hits.  Defensively, the Devils were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Nick Mundy made the most plays with eight.

BIG DOGS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

With over 410,000 votes during the final poll, the first-ever Baird Brothers/YSN Big Dogs of the Valley Players of the Year were awarded during intermission of the YSN All-Star Game last night.  The award was based on three separate pieces of data which were weighted and scored.

For the girls, Beaver Local’s Jenna Riccardo will wear the crown for 2019.  Riccardo won the Week 1 vote for BDOV, and was nominated 11 out of the 12 weeks the contest was held.  In only her junior season, Jenna became the all-time leading scorer for the Beavers.  She also averaged a double-double this year with 23 points, and 13.3 rebounds per game alongside her 2.6 steals and nearly two blocks to boot.  She also was recognized for being the Columbiana County player of the year, and most recently was named third-team All-Ohio.

Taking home the award for the guys is Lisbon Senior, Justin Sweeney.  A young man who’s battled through many obstacles just to be on the court this season.  However, when he stepped back on the floor, he owned it.  After returning to the court less than 3 months after reconstructive knee surgery, Justin came back to average 21 points per game with 8 rebounds in 2019 while becoming Lisbon’s All-Time Leading Scorer.  Sweeney took home the Week 4 honors for BDOV, and had nominations in each week thereafter.  Earlier this week, Justin was named to the Division IV All-Ohio team.

Congratulations to both Jenna and Justin from all of us at YSN, and on behalf of Baird Brothers.  An extraordinary season for both players, and well-deserved accomplishments this season from many outlets.

EOAC AND MVAC SPLIT SENIOR GAMES IN LISBON

LISBON, OH- The Annual Senior EOAC- Gray /MVAC-Red All-Star game held at Lisbon David Anderson High School Kicked off with the senior ladies. Red came out strong in the first half but the Gray fought back and held on 23-21 at the half. Southern Local’s Riley Felton made a dominating statement under the hoop scoring 12 points and collecting numerous rebounds. Columbiana’s Tessa Liggitt threw in 11 for the Gray. Springfield’s Marlie Applegarth and Jackson Milton’s Ashley Cameron both led Red with 10 points. Team Gray’s fast-paced ball movement and aggressiveness were too much for the Red. Final EOAC Gray 52 -MVAC 36

On the senior boy’s side, MVAC Red team came out on top 77-68 over the EOAC Gray. A fast-paced game of all local outstanding seniors did not disappoint the crowd, the game was close the entire 2 halves. For the EOAC Gray,  Lisbon’s Justin Sweeney, wasted no time showing why he’s a Big Dog of the Valley, leading the Gray with 12 points, followed by Wellsville’s Garett Scott with 11 points, United’s Landon Baker, another Big Dog of the Valley, made a statement battling under the hoop and ended the game with 8 points and cleaned the glass all evening for the EOAC.
MVAC Red leading scorers Springfield’s Shane Eynon scored 17 points, and Sebring’s Joey Clark hit 5 from beyond the arc finishing with 17.

The brother-sister duo, Western Reserve’s Kennedy and Riley Miller both won the 3 point shoot out, East Palestine’s Joclyn Fristik finished third in the event.

SWEENEY HITTING HIS STRIDE: JUSTIN TIME

Close your eyes for a moment.

It’s your senior year.  You’ve dreamt of this moment since you were a young Lisbon Blue Devil.  Since the time you first laced up your shoes and wore the “L” proudly in front of your community.

Now imagine all you’ve worked for being taken away from you with one misstep, one accident, one freak play.  The heartache, the frustration, the anger.  There’s no way you’ll be able to play, and if you somehow made it back later that year- you wouldn’t be the same.  It’s enough to make anybody throw in the towel and give up.

Anybody but Lisbon’s Justin Sweeney.

The Senior Blue Devil suffered what seemingly should have been a year ending injury.  However, just a few months after a devastating knee injury Sweeney lived up to his epic tweet on that tough night in Northeast Ohio.

Justin.  Sweeney.  Was.  Back.

Not only did he come back, but he became the scorer he was, and the one he was always meant to be.  Lisbon’s All-Time Scoring Leader!

Now with his team one way away from District play, Sweeney will take the floor on Friday against Sebring with momentum on his team’s side.  Lisbon looks to repay a debt that was served on the Devil’s home court two years ago when Sebring upset Lisbon to advance in the tournament.

We sat down with Justin for this week’s Lisbon Player Profile: SWEENEY HITS HIS STRIDE: JUSTIN TIME.

JUSTIN TIME FOR LISBON

The heartbeat is strong in Lisbon this year!  Among a great group of Seniors stands a leader with flowing locks like Thor, and plans to drop the hammer on opposing defenses.  The Devil’s Tailback, Justin Sweeney is detailed as an athlete, not just a football player.  He makes opposing coaches cringe with the athleticism, and versatility he possesses.

But in a great sit-down with Tyler Hoffman, Justin breaks down his love for his new coach, as well as what he wants to do after his Blue Devil days come to an end.

This week’s Lisbon Player Profile is Justin Sweeney: JUSTIN TIME FOR LISBON.
