CARDINALS HOLD ON TO TOP HOWLAND

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney had to survive a mighty Howland comeback on Wednesday night to survive 50-49. The Cardinals led 26-18 at the break, and were outscored 31-24 in the second half.

Katie Hough led the Cardinals with 24 points. Angelina Rotunno was also in double figures for Mooney with 11.

Howland was led by Taylor Lawrence with 13 points.

 

 

MOONEY SILENCES SPARTANS

BOARDMAN OH- It has been a long Off season for the Mooney girls basketball team. They’ve waited through missed practices, and canceled games to finally get on the floor earlier this week. On Saturday night their first win of the season came on a 45-37 win over Boardman.

Katie Hough was all over the court for Mooney, leading the Cardinals with a game-high 18 points.

Gia Triveri, and Emma Mills both led the Spartans with 10 points.

Mooney will look to continue its success as they are scheduled to travel to Canfield this week.

 

MOONEY SCRAPS THEIR WAY TO VICTORY

AUSTINTOWN OH- It was senior night in Austintown and Mooney and Fitch squared off for the second time in three days on Monday, this time from the Falcons Nest in Austintown. The result however would be the same as the Cardinals battled their way to a 53-42 win.

Katie Hough paved the way for Mooney scoring 21 points. Alaina Scavina was also in double figures with 13.

Fitch was led by two of their seniors. Chelsie Wheeler led the Falcons scoring with 12, while Emma Bartlett finished with 8.

CARDINALS EDGE COLUMBIANA LATE

COLUMBIANA OH – It was senior night for the Columbiana Clippers coming off a loss last week looking to bounce back against the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals. The Clippers would come up short after Mooney surged in the second quarter on both sides of the ball with assistance from Guard/Forward Katie Hough. Hough reached double digits in points in the winning effort.

Columbiana had the lead after the first quarter 16-8 thanks in part by Guard Grace Witmer and Guard Tori Long with free throws and a few backdoor passes that led to field goals. The Clippers led in rebounds in the first quarter thanks to Addison Zohnd who stopped any second chance shots by Mooney on the defensive side. Second quarter both teams closed the gap with tight defense. Both teams only allowed 9 points each going into halftime but it was Columbiana who went into the locker room leading 25-17.
Third quarter Hough got going in a big way for the Cardinals. Helping them to claim the lead for the first time with 5 minutes left in the quarter after an 8-0 run. Hough and Mooney led going into the final quarter 35-30. The Clippers made it interesting in the fourth quarter closing the gap to 4 points but Mooney would come away with the victory. The Cardinals beat the Clippers 46-41.

PERRY PACES REBELS PAST MOONEY IN THRILLER

COLUMBIANA OH- Crestview has to fight all night on Thursday as they welcomed in Mooney to Rebel Country. It was the Cardinals first game of the year, and they played hungry. Crestview has to overcome a six point deficit in the final frame to beat Mooney 43-41 in a thriller.

Krista Perry continued her strong campaign leading the Rebels with 17 points. Seven different Rebels got themselves on the scoresheet.

Alaina Scavina had a great first game leading the Cardinals with a game-high 21 points. Katie Hough added 11.

Crestview will travel to United on Monday.

CARDINALS SHOCK BERKSHIRE MOVE ON TO TITLE

BURTON OH- Cardinal Mooney came in to this district tournament with a record of 7-14 and the 16 seed, but that’s not how they’re playing now. They added another tournament win to their already impressive resume with a 5 set thriller over Berkshire (25-15 24-26 25-21 23-25 15-12).

Katie Hough led the Cardinals offense with 9 kills, but she was incredible on the defensive side totaling 37 digs. Alaina Scavina was right behind her with 8. Angelina Rotunno had a nice night setting up 28 assists. Scavina finished with 18 digs, Rotunno finished with 13.

Mooney advances to the district championship where they’ll try to Upset yet another team. They will travel to one seed Crestview on Saturday. That match will start at 1:00.

CARDINALS SOAR IN SEASON FINALE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney continued their impressive final week of the season with a sweep of Springfield on Thursday night (25-17 26-24 25-14).

Raegan Filipowicz led the Cardinals offense with 10 kills, and she served up 5 aces. Angelina Rotunno captures a double double with 26 assists, and 17 digs. Katie Hough also put together a strong performance with 7 kills. Rotunno also finished with 4 aces.

Cardinal Mooney will move on to their tournament run traveling to LaBrae. Springfield will host Chalker in their first match of the OHSAA tournament.

MOONEY GETS ON THE RIGHT TRACK

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Mooney has had a tough season so far in 2020. It can be largely attributed to the high strength of schedule they have. But as of late, the Cardinals seem to be on the right track. They took their second match in a row Tuesday night with a sweep of Warren Harding.

Raegan Filipowicz led the Cardinals in kills with 13. Katie Hough recorded a double double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Angelina Rotunno put together a solid performance with 37 assists and 4 aces. Alaina Scavina was also in double digits in digs finishing with 10.

Mooney looks to keep their winning streak alive on Thursday as they host East.

RANGE CLEANS CARDINALS CLOCKS

CANFIELD OH- South Range keeps regrouping from adversity in the 2020 season. They’ve had a couple of injuries, a couple of losing streaks, but have always managed to persevere and get back on track. Monday was no different as they looked sharp in a sweep of Mooney (25-18 25-23 25-16).

Izzy Lamparty led the Raiders in offense with 8 kills. Reagan Irons has a nice day in the back row collecting 20 digs. Sarah Kuhns is getting more comfortable as the setter and she finished with 15 assists. Madi Dado served 4 aces.

Katie Hough tries to carry Mooney, leading the team in three categories with 11 kills, 3 aces, and 6 digs. Angelina Rotunno finished with a match-high 29 digs, she also shared the lead in digs with 6.

South Range returns to league action on Tuesday as they host Hubbard. That game will be live on YSN. Mooney gets another tough test out of the NE8 as they host Lakeview on Wednesday.

MOONEY TAKES DOWN RIVAL IRISH

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Mooney Volleyball ended a slight losing skid on Thursday with a five set win over rival Ursuline.

Mooney has four players with double digit kills. Leading the way was Katie Hough with a double double. She had 12 kills and 22 assists. Alaina Scavina has 12 kills as well. Alaina Francis gathered 11 kills, while Raegan Filipowicz accumulated 10. Angelina Rotunno led the defense with 35 digs. Other Cardinals played great defense as well, Gia DiVincenzo finished with 20, and Leanne Chandler had 15. Francis served 4 aces as well.

Mooney is now 2-5 and will host Lakeview on Wednesday. Ursuline drops to 2-4 and will travel to Newton Falls on Saturday.
