FOLKLORE, OR FOLKWEIN? YOU DECIDE

By Ty Bartell

AUSTINTOWN OH- When speaking about athletics in larger high schools, it becomes increasingly difficult to
participate and start in multiple sports. The bigger the school means more competition within and less spots for everyone on the team. Not to mention, the time commitment that comes with being a multiple sport athlete and the sacrifices that need to be made to accommodate a time schedule like that.

For Austintown-Fitch sophomore, Kylie Folkwein, it is just another day at the office! Entering Austintown as a freshman phenom last year, Folkwein found herself involved in volleyball, basketball and softball while having important roles and playing time in all three! Managing to rack up 144 kills in volleyball a season ago, Folkwein looked to build upon a strong freshman season. Ranking second on the team in kills (194) and kills per set (2.8), Kylie has also gotten down defensively as she is tied for third on the team in digs (213) at the time of this article.

With improved numbers all the way around this season, many may begin to wonder “Doesn’t she play for a prolific travel softball team? How can that be?” Well folks, it’s not folklore, it’s Folkwein! As Ty Bartell got the chance to sit down with the sensational sophomore for her first of many Player Profiles this season.

THE GEOLOGIST HAS SOLID POTENTIAL

By Ty Bartell

AUSTINTOWN OH- Impactful freshmen have seemed to be a dime a dozen when talking about Austintown-Fitch High School, but even more so when talking about The Falcons softball club. However, not too many freshmen have impacted a multitude of sports this year quite like Kylie Folkwein! Playing on the courts and being featured heavily for over the first half of the year with volleyball and basketball, but it was the sport of softball that Austintown as a community said “just you wait!”

Patience has paid off, Folkwein is batting an amazing .465 with 4 homeruns and 17 RBI through 16 games on the season! Another incredible attribute of Folkwein’s is her ability and willingness to be placed wherever a team needs her. Being as gifted athletically as she is, she can become the ultimate utility athlete at Austintown-Fitch! Softball was a case of the team needing a center fielder, and though it may not be Kylie’s natural position, she has seemingly made it look like she has owned the outfield for years!

Experiencing the ups and downs of various sports seasons has given Folkwein the maturity and experience to build off of for future campaigns. One thing about Kylie, she is never satisfied with her results, an ever-hungry athlete that is always looking to be the best of the best. We cannot wait to tell the full story through the high school career of this amazing athlete, but we will of course start with the beginning chapters. Be sure to check out this edition of player profile as Ty Bartell and Anthony Hartwig chat with The Falcon Freshmen, Kylie Folkwein,  about the season so far, the learning points and future goals!

FOLKWEIN IS NO ORDINARY FRESHMAN

AUSTINTOWN OH- It is too little to no doubt that the play of kids in sports is improving across the board. One of these glaring examples is the growing number of high school freshmen continuing to get varsity spots and excelling. Austintown has not been a stranger to freshmen success either, as YSNs 2022 Softball Player of the Year went to Falcon Softball star Sydnie Watts this past spring.

Well, ANOTHER name has made rumblings throughout the community. This tale speaks of an impressive multiple sport athlete, one with an incredible work ethic and an even better attitude.

Collectively, Austintown will grow to learn the name Kylie Folkwein!

A three-sport athlete throughout her middle school, Folkwein served huge roles playing middle school volleyball, basketball and softball. Should she choose to participate in the same sports in her high school career, expect her to make an impact wherever she goes. Already making a difference on Fitch’s volleyball team, Folkwein has already collected 54 Kills (3rd on team), 15 Aces (3rd on team), 7 Blocks, 58 Digs, and 81 Receptions. Developing herself as another viable threat to an already dangerous Falcon offense, Folkwein has burst on the scene.

Beyond that, Kylie displays an incredible attitude on and off the court, while also having the confidence not often seen from freshmen.

If you have yet to hear of her, you better learn the name, because Folkwein is a goldmine for Austintown Athletics!
