LEAVE IT TO LEVENSKY

LEAVITTSBURG OH- In a season where many might predict LaBrae’s success to be in the future, the Vikings are already proving the naysayers wrong with a stellar 9-1 start. Amidst this thriving team, one of the emerging leaders is junior standout Marissa Levensky.

With just one senior on the roster, LaBrae relies on the youthful energy and determination of players like Levensky to shape a winning culture. Her contributions extend beyond the stat sheet, embodying what it means to be a leader on and off the court.

Levensky set her sights on improvement at the start of the season, and she has delivered. Averaging an impressive 7.4 points per game, she has become a scoring force for the Vikings. What’s even more remarkable is her growth in confidence, solidifying her position as one of the team’s premier players.

Balancing academics, work, and sports might seem like an insurmountable challenge, but for Levensky, it’s a testament to her unwavering determination and discipline. Taking AP classes while holding down a job, Marissa exemplifies the commitment required to excel both academically and athletically.

As LaBrae’s journey unfolds, all eyes are on Marissa Levensky—a dynamic force pushing herself to new heights as a leader, player, and an inspiring individual. The future is undoubtedly bright for this rising star of LaBrae’s girls’ basketball program.

VIKINGS CONQUER CAMPBELL

By Matt Maher

LEAVITTSBURG, OH – The Vikings went on a raid Thursday night when they pillaged the visiting Red Devils of an MVAC win by scoring 57 points to Campbell’s 15. The Vikings showed yet another strong defensive game against a struggling team that, at times, had its troubles passing the ball and more importantly getting clear shots through. With LaBrae being the MVAC powerhouse they have become the final score came as no surprise to those watching.

The Vikings scored much and often in the first half, accumulating 18 points in the first quarter to memorials 4. Riley Rowe and Marissa Levensky led the charge with Rowe scoring an impressive 10 points all in the paint and Levensky putting up 3 from the charity stripe. Campbell just couldn’t muster together a clean pass or entry into the offensive zone without the help of fouls which is the main reason they only scored 4 points with all of them coming late. Angeliz Diaz found a hard earned 2 in the paint and Amira Kamal found her 2 points via the free throw line where she hit 2 of 4 shots.

The second quarter belonged entirely to the Vikings because they not only dropped 23 points but they also shut Campbell out! The Red Devils showed heart and improved at moving the ball down the floor but the in-your-face defense LaBrae showed was far too much for Campbell to get around. LaBrae saw Levensky score 6 more points all from the paint and Ella Kuszmaul joined the party with 11 points including a gritty 3 and four 2’s. Eva Prejsnar would also score 5 points for her team showing the whole team was in on the fun.

With the dominant performance from LaBrae in the first half the clock refused to stop in the 2nd as LaBrae continued their focus on defense and still outscored Campbell in the 3rd with a 9-2 difference. Rowe found 3 more points from beyond the arc while Kuszmaul made 2 of 2 charity tosses. Campbells lone scorer would be Diaz who added to her team lead in points.

While Campbell struggled against the starters they found life in the 4th against the Vikings Bench where they managed to outscore LaBrae 9-7. LaBrae saw Makayla Scruggs and Megan Young both put up 2’s and Brielle Stout made 2 of 4 free throws. Memorial saw Diamon Sims find her first and only 4 points in this quarter with two 2’s including one off of a takeaway. Kamal found a 2 herself and Diaz hit her teams only made 3 of the match!

While Campbell showed life in the late stage of this game, it was LaBrae who stole the show and dominated the hardwood on Thursday night. The Vikings saw 8 different players score for them in this game including 9 points for Levensky, 13 for Rowe and 16 for Kuszmaul! Campbell only saw three girls get on the score sheet: Sims with 2, Kamal with 4 and Diaz with 7. Campbell Memorial (1-8, 0-6) will face off against Leetonia at home on January 6th at 11:30AM while LaBrae (9-1, 5-1) travels to the Crestview to try and be the first to take down the undefeated Rebels, that game will be on January 8th at 7:00PM.

LABRAE DEFENSE LOOMS LARGE

By Matt Maher

LEAVITTSBURG, OH – It was business as usual for LaBrae Tuesday night when they hosted Windham. The Vikings would show dominant play on offense and some great defense against the Bombers that would help lead them to a 52-32 victory.

For Windham the first quarter was a feeling out for how the game would go and as a result of their more passive start they would only put up 6 points. All 6 came from 3 different sources: Briah Daniel, Brielle Jones and Lorena De Oliveria. While The Bombers didn’t score a whole lot, they did find a groove on the defensive side of the ball in the final 2 minutes which helped them keep LaBrae from scoring on an astronomical scale. Speaking of LaBrae they found 14 points with 9 of them coming from the great Ella Kuszmaul who hit three 2’s as well as the games first 3.

LaBrae continued their hot hands with 16 more points in the 2nd quarter. Scoring was spread across 6 different players including Marissa Levensky who found her first 2, Mia Sloan who scored a beautiful 3 and Ella Kuszmaul who found 5 more points with a 2 and a 3. Windham found 10 points and were led by Daniel who erupted for 6 points and really got her fantastic night started in this frame.

Windham would continue to see Daniel score another 8 points and continue to amaze everyone in the gym and at home. The other 2 points would come from Mariah Woods who had spent all night intercepting passes and pushing the ball down the floor and while the majority of her shots were too hard she did show improvement as the game went on. LaBrae scored 12 more points on their way to 52 with another even quarter of scoring among the team. Levensky scored 4 more points doubling her first half production while Kuszmaul only added 2 more points.

Windham continued their defensive showing but still had trouble cashing in on chances and with their struggles they only managed to score 6 points with all of them coming from Daniel who hit a 2 and then went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Briah Daniel would go on to finish the night with 22 points which led all players in scoring. LaBrae would only score 10 points with 6 of them coming from Levensky who really found herself in the final frame. The other 4 would come from Eva Prejsnar and Kuszmaul who each scored 2 points.

It was another great night for the Vikings who improved to 8-1 with this latest victory. Ella Kuszmaul finished with 18 points and Marissa Levensky with 12. For Windham they were led far and away by Briah Daniel with her 22 points and no Bomber came close with the second highest scorer being Mariah Woods who had 4 points. Despite the great defense we saw from Windham the Vikings were too much to contain and as a result they moved to 4-3. Windham will be back in action where they travel to Maplewood to take on the rockets at 5:30Pm on January 4th and LaBrae will stay at home when they host Campbell Memorial on January 4th at 7:00PM.

LABRAE GETS SEPARATION FROM THE TIGERS

By Matt Maher

NEWTON FALLS, OH – After an exhilarating finish to a double Overtime Junior Varsity nail biter, The Varsity squads for LaBrae and Newton Falls were ready to take to the hardwood and and try to top the play we saw from JV and boy did they deliver as the final score saw LaBrae top Newton Falls 58-48.

The Tigers struck first on a free throw from Landon McGregor only to have LaBrae come back the other way and take the lead. The majority of the first saw the lead switch between the two teams by just one point until Jay McGarry and company settled down and took control of the quarter that they ended up winning 19-13. McGarry would put up 10 points for the Vikings and Jabriel Rufai would start off his extremely impressive night with 8 points for The Falls.

LaBrae wouldn’t let up in the second and continued to show an impressive drive by putting up 13 points to Newton Falls 9. David Blackmon would shine bright in this frame by putting up 6 points  while Derek Wilson found 5. On the other side of the floor Rufai would find 7 more points putting him at 15 points for the first half alone! LaBrae would take a 32-22 lead into halftime but Newton falls would have something to say heading into the third.

The Tigers caught fire coming out of the break and the score reflected that with The Falls scoring 18 points to LaBrae’s 11. The Quarter was dominated by Rufai by putting up 11 points including a nice three pointer near the end of the quarter. Austin Rowe and Blackmon both put up 4 points for LaBrae and McGarry got back on the board by putting up a three. Newton Falls would close the gap and trail 43-40 going into the final frame.

While the Tigers found some life in the third they just couldn’t find the same production in the fourth and would only find 8 points to the Vikings 15. Rufai found 5 more points rounding off his night with a staggering 31 points on the night which is more than some teams find in a single game! David Blackmon continued his impressive night of scoring with 6 more points allowing him to finish with 18 points which led his team in scoring with Derek Wilson finishing three points shy with 15 and Jay McGarry with 13.

Despite good defense and the living cheat code of Jabriel Rufai connecting the Tigers just couldn’t get past the solid team play of the Vikings. LaBrae will continue to stay undefeated in the MVAC sitting at 3-0 while Newton Falls falls to 1-2 to start off this season. LaBrae Hits the court again when they host Bristol on December 22nd at 7:00PM and Newton Falls will stay at home when they host Howland on December 22nd at 7:ooPM as well.

FLASHES TAKE A BIG STEP IN THE MVAC

By Ty Bartell

LEAVITTSBURG OH- Inside of Your Sports Networks, many girls basketball conferences look to be competitive this season, with multiple teams competing for each and every conference represented on the network. Of all those conferences, none may be as competitive as the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Division. With a good five of eight teams having a good shot at coming away with the conference crown, two of which battled on Thursday night when The Champion Flashes took a stroll down the road to Leavittsburg to battle The LaBrae Vikings!

Both teams already having a successful start to the season with The Flashes were sporting a 4-1 record and a 1-0 conference record, meanwhile, LaBrae was 5-0 and a 2-0 conference clip heading into Thursday. The Vikings came out swinging and delivered a heavy blow to Champion in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 11-1 lead. The Flashes managed a couple buckets, but LaBrae still held the 8 point lead at 13-5 after a quarter. In the second quarter, Isabella Meyer started heating up and willing Champion back into the contest. Effectively knotting the game up twice in the second, The Vikings still managed to hold the lead heading into halftime, this time with a slimmer 29-25 lead.

Champion got contributions from Kennedy Caldwell and Kayla Haynie to help take a 39-38 lead into the fourth quarter! Both teams would scrap tooth and nail till the very end, but it was Champion who stood atop The Vikings 52-49 in the first of two Trumbull County wars this year between the two programs.

Isabella Meyer got Player of the Game honors with her 24 points to lead The Flashes, Meyer also showed off those active hands that have averaged just under 5 steals a game this season, more than meeting her season average against The Vikings. Behind Meyer, Kennedy Caldwell finished with 7 points and Kayla Haynie had 6 points in the game. For LaBrae, they were led by Ella Kuszmaul who finished with a tough 19 points on the night. Also with a productive night for The Vikings was Mariah Jones who came away with a ton of boards in the post while putting up 11 points of offense.
