VIKINGS REIGN SUPREME

LIBERTY OH- LaBrae and Liberty crossed paths for the second time this season on the hardwood. They went the distance the first time around and we were all expecting a repeat of the first performance. That would not be the case as fatigue has finally caught up with the Leopards this season. An onslaught of games going four and five sets seems like it has finally started to wear on Liberty who had a lot of simple mistakes that cost them a chance at victory in Thursday nights meeting. LaBrae had a few mistakes of their own, but they played a solid overall match, and their defensive abilities allowed them to stay put and have Liberty make the mistakes to help them along on their biggest runs of the night.

Set one was controlled by the Vikings the whole way through as Taylor Burns and Rylee McDonough swarmed the net. After a brief back and forth at the start of the set the Vikings took off and won set one 25-11. Set’s two and three would not be so easy as the two squads swapped the lead over and over as Liberty stormed back from down six to take the lead 23-21, but the Vikings would end the set on a 4-0 run to make a comeback of their own to win set two. Set three became equally challenging for both teams as they both were feeling the wear and tear of such a hard-fought battle. Once more they would share the lead, but ultimately it was the Vikings who were able to get the last point of the net. Thanks to great effort all around LaBrae won set three 25-23. Taylor Burns was named player of the game.

LaBrae moves up to (10-5) on the season after Thursday’s victory and they will attempt to put together a three-game winning streak as they play host to the (15-1) Mineral Ridge Rams at home on Monday. Liberty falls back to .500 on the season with their record now at (8-8) and they will look towards the weekend for some much needed rest and relaxation before going on the road Monday against (13-4) Western Reserve.

CHAMPION GETS ANOTHER BIG WIN

LEAVITTSBURG OH- Champion avenged last years tough loss to LaBrae in Week 5 by going to Leavittsburg and rocking the Vikings by a score of 37-14.

Champion set the tone on its first drive of the field. They marched right down the field and capped their impressive drive off with a Nick Vesey touchdown.  Vesey would score again on the night. Joey Fell would join him with a pair of touchdowns.  For LaBrae Trenton Stehura threw two touchdowns.

Champion will have a big test in Week 6 as they square off with Garfield. LaBrae will have to travel to Newton Falls to try and get their first win of the season.

REBELS DOMINANT YET AGAIN

LEAVITTSBURG OH- Crestview continued their absolute dominance of the MVAC on Tuesday night as they swept LaBrae on the road. (27-25 25-12 25-8)

JAYS KEEP THE PARTY GOING

NORTH JACKSON OH- Last season the Blue Jays only had two wins, but in 20222, they have rebounded winning their first three games of the season as coach Nathan Brode and the Jackson Milton Blue Jays hosted the LaBrae Vikings Friday night.

Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter but the blue jays would be on the move.  Star quarterback Alex Schiavi threw a screen pass making it 7-0.  Later on a little trickery as Schiavi pitched it behind his back to Owen McDevitt who found Aidan Stanke wide open for a touchdown making it 14-0 going into the half.

Milton would just keep on running up the score in the second half as Joey Zayas took it in for a 15-yard touchdown, now up 21-0.  Schiavi’s final two touchdowns was him doing an old style drop back on the goaline, finding Stanke in the back of the endzone and him taking it himself making the final 34-0.  The Vikings of LaBrae had four chances in the Redzone in the first half, but were stopped by Cayden Mitchell and the talented defense of Jackson Milton.

LaBrae (0-3) has now lost their first three games since 2012 and will host Mahoning Valley Grey Tier conference Garretsville Garfield (2-1) who lost by one point to Warren JFK (22-21) next week.  Jackson Milton (3-0) will travel to Berlin Center Ohio to take on a Mahoning Valley Scarlet Division rival Western Reserve (1-2) 7pm Friday.

After the game, Ian O’Brien caught up with head coach Nathan Brode on the big win and what to expect for next week’s game.

GARFIELD HOLDS BACK VIKINGS

GARRETTSVILLE OH-

n what was the first Tuesday in The 2022 Fall sports season, plenty of volleyball games were on the slate and some seasons got underway Tuesday evening. For The Garrettsville Garfield Lady G-Men, they look to build off a great 2021 season into this year. Garrettsville has also returned a number of their stat leaders from a season ago, their first conference opponent of the season? The LaBrae Vikings, a 15-10 volleyball team last year that pushed Garfield to five sets in both regular season meetings in 2021.

LaBrae lost a few of their top contributors; however, they return The Junior Triple-Double Threat in Rylee McDonough, who a season ago recorded 200+ Kills, Digs and Assists in 2021. On the other side, Garfield returned a pair of players with 200+ Kills in last year’s campaign in Montana McGranahan (278) and Gabby Barnard (279). Pair that with The Lady G-Men’s setter in Madeline Shirkey, who is always present in multiple areas of the box score.

It was that trio from Garfield that served as the biggest impact in their first matchup with The Vikings this season. Barnard, Shirkey and McGranahan all recorded double-doubles to open up the conference play. A competitive first set that fell the way of Garrettsville allowed them to take that momentum into a match victory of LaBrae in straight sets Tuesday night. Pushing The Lady G-Men to 2-1 on the year, while The Vikings drop to 0-1. Both teams are on the road Thursday, August 25th, as Garfield will be at Campbell and Labrae at Newton Falls to continue conference

play.

BRIGHT DAYS ARE AHEAD IN LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview football has been searching for positives for a while. They came into the 2022 season on a 16 game losing streak, and they’d lost 25 of their last 28. Well, you can drown all of that negativity away because they opened the season with an emphatic win over last year’s 1 seed in Division VI LaBrae 34-7.

Nolan Toth finished the Bulldogs first drive of the game with a three yard touchdown, and they would never look back.  Damien Natali took the quarterback role and finished with 115 rushing yards on 13 carries and found the end zone twice. Hayden Bartram also scored for the Bulldogs offense.  Lakeview totaled 291 rushing yards on the day.

The Lakeview defense was up for the task too as they held the Vikings to just 149 total yards.
