BOARDMAN, OH – YSN recently had the opportunity to sit down and speak to head coach Fred Mootz of the Boardman Lady Spartans. The Lady Spartans have three seniors and two of them are already committed to play at the next level. Coach Mootz also has four juniors who lettered as freshman, and of course like the rest of Ohio spring sports they missed out on last season due to COVID. Coach reminded us that he knows he has high expectations as this year is the 20th anniversary of 2001 Boardman Lady Spartans state championship team, that being said, he understands its always one game at a time. Defense and pitching will lead the way for Boardman and they expect their bats will heat up as the weather does, right in time for the state tournament.

NORTH CANTON, OH- The Boardman Lady Spartans fell to a solid Indian Creek Redskins team on Sunday afternoon 50-40 at Walsh University’s Holiday Hoopla.

Boardman led 12-10 after the first quarter but Creek dominated the second with an 18-9 quarter to lead 28-21 at the half. Boardman cut the lead to 46-40 with about 2 minutes to go but missed several free throws and was forced to foul and Indian Creek capitalized at the line to put the game away.

The loss drops Boardman’s record to 0-2 on the young season. The Maroon and White were led by Juniors, Maria Torres (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals) and Emma Tokarsky (12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals). Raegan Burkey had 6 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Katie Stamp added 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals as she was limited by foul trouble. Rounding at the scoring were Jenna Olexa with a triple and Gia Triveri with 2.

Boardman looks to get their first win on the season Wednesday at home versus rival Cardinal Mooney.  That game can be seen on YSN.
