WARRIORS ON FIRE IN SECTIONAL FINAL WIN

East Ashtabula, OH- In a thrilling sectional final showdown, the Edgewood Warriors delivered a commanding performance against the Gilmour Academy Lancers, securing a resounding victory with a final score of 77-57. Led by the stellar scoring efforts of Jacob Ernst and Peyton Williams, the Warriors showcased their offensive prowess and defensive tenacity throughout the game.

From the opening tip-off, Jacob Ernst demonstrated his scoring prowess, delivering a dominant performance that set the tone for the game. With an explosive first quarter, Ernst showcased his sharpshooting abilities, knocking down five 3-pointers and contributing 14 points to the Warriors’ early lead. Peyton Williams also displayed his shooting skills, adding to the Warriors’ offensive onslaught with four 3-pointers of his own.

Despite the Lancers’ efforts to mount a comeback in the second and third quarters, the Warriors maintained their composure and continued to control the tempo of the game. With a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense, the Warriors extended their lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors showcased their resilience and determination, fending off a late surge from the Lancers to secure the sectional championship victory. With Jacob Ernst leading the charge with an impressive 41-point performance, the Warriors celebrated their well-deserved triumph on the court.

With this victory, the Edgewood Warriors (18-5) clinch the sectional championship title and advance to the district semifinals of the OHSAA playoffs. They will await the winner of the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Lions vs. Geneva Eagles game as they continue their postseason journey.

As for the Gilmour Academy Lancers (15-9), their season comes to an end with this loss in the sectional final.

MOONEY GETS REVENGE ON THE LANCERS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- After losing 10-1 last season to Gilmour Academy, Cardinal Mooney was locked in on sweet revenge Thursday night as they defeated the Lancers 10-7 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Peyton Campbell led offense with 4 goals, while Addison Stacy had 3. Ella Szalay had 2 goals, 2 assists, and 11 draw controls. Sophia Graziano rounded out the night with one goal. Alyssa Ray had 15 saves in goal.

Mooney will play home one last time before spring break Saturday at noon vs Laurel!

INDIANS SEASON MEETS THE END IN OVERTIME

CHARDON OH – In a game in which they trailed most of the way, Gilmour Academy rallied late to knock off Girard 61-55 in overtime. After trailing at halftime and 40-32 through three quarters, Gilmour looked towards their senior leader Adisa Molton II who provided 21 points to help extend their season. A 50-50 score pushed things to overtime where a late three point shot by Zachary Titas ultimately sealed the deal for Gilmour.

Although it came in defeat, Thomas Cardiero led Girard with 22 points, Gus Johnson added 14 points, and Ryan Fitzgerald finished up with 11. The hard fought win propels Gilmour into the district final game as they will battle with Ursuline. The showdown will take place at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin with a 4 p.m. tip-off Saturday night.

BOARDMAN LEAPS LANCERS

BOARDMAN OH- The Lady Spartans played well Thursday against Gilmour Academy beating them 181-207. Senior Zoey Fick-Mills had the low score of 39 while Junior Sophia Rivera shot a 41. Senior Emily Choleva shot a 49 on the back 9 of the North Course at Mill Creek and Junior Haily Rusnak shot a 52 while Senior Kate Pendleton shot a 56.

Boardman will be in action on Tuesday as they host Akron Hoban at Mill Creek Golf Course.

RAIDERS GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO THEIR BIG GOAL

CANFIELD OH- To win a state championship, you have to go through two other brackets. On Thursday night, South Range achieved the first step to a bigger goal. They won their 9th district championship in 12 seasons with a 5-1 win over Gilmour Academy. The celebration was calm and mellow, the Raiders know they still have a lot of business to attend too before their journey is up.

For two teams that hit the ball extremely well, this game started out as a pitcher’s duel. Both teams spent the first several innings getting runners aboard and not being able to move them home. That changed in the 3rd inning when Gilmour Academy scored first on an RBI hit by pitch. In that inning the Lancers loaded the bases with an error, infield single, and intentional walk before scoring a run.

 

The Raiders quickly answered in the bottom of the frame when Jamie Feren tripled, and then was hit in by Kelly Szolek to tie the game. After holding the Lancers scoreless in the fourth, the Raiders opened up the bottom of the frame with back to back singles. Enter Gretchen Bartels.  Bartels fell behind 0-2, worked there count full, and then blasted a home run to center field. The three run shot would be the turning point of the game for the Raiders.

Juli Stachowicz entered the game in the circle in the fifth. She kept the Lancers quiet the rest of the way. In her three innings pitched she gave up 1 hit and struck out 5.  Sam Susany started the game. She also only gave up a hit in 4 IP and struck out a pair. The run she gave up was unearned.

Bartels wasn’t done yet, she came back up in the 6th inning and hit her second home run of the game to extend the Raiders lead to 5-1. It was a dramatic finish to the game as Gilmour tried to make some 2 out noise. After a walk, and a steal, Megan Mlinaric singled up the middle. Allison Schuh raced around third looking to score, but Madi Dado made a laser throw out of center to throw her out at the plate to end it.

South Range advances to the regional semifinals where they’ll match up with Tuslaw for the second year in a row.  They’re set to play Wednesday at 1:00 at Ravenna.

UNITED REFLECTS ON AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY

CANFIELD OH- District semifinals usually mean higher seeded teams squaring off in much anticipated matchups.  Both United and Gilmour Academy had other plans as each entered Tuesday nights contest coming off upsets in the sectional round.  It was the Lancers who kept proving their march towards a district crown is no fluke as Gilmour Academy defeated United 15-2 in the district semifinals at South Range High School.

Gilmour would strike early in the top of the 1st inning as Laney Klika would leadoff the game, doubling to left center.  Consecutive singles by Allison Schuh and Megam Mlinaric followed by a throwing error gave the Lancers the early 3-0 lead.  The United hitters would answer in the bottom half of the inning. Joshlyn Irey singled following a leadoff walk by Sam Lippiatt and the Eagles were in business.  Tori Firth and Colby Burton would follow with back to back RBI singles cutting the Lancers lead to 3-2.

  The talented Lancers lineup would answer back in the top of the next inning adding 2 runs extending the lead to 5-2. The 3 run lead would prove to be enough moving forward as Gilmour Academy starter Megan Mlinaric (5IP, 5H, 7K) settled in limiting United hitters to just 2 hits the rest of the way.  The Lancers offensively would go on to add 10 more runs including a 3 run Home Run by Mlinaric to seal the five inning victory. 

Tori Firth (5IP, 15H, 3K) took the loss in the circle as she was roughed up by the talented Lancer lineup. The loss for United abruptly ended a very successful campaign that captivated the small town of Hanoverton. 

Coach Matt Zines on the Eagles quick rise this season “Most of our girls do not play year round so we knew we had a big challenge ahead of ourselves if we wanted to compete at the level we believed they could achieve. The improvement came much quicker than we could imagine.  The leadership of our 3 seniors shined through during our early season workouts.”

  The 15 wins posted this season by the Eagles is something Coach Zines hopes helps catapult United softball to greater things moving forward  “The season success legitimizes what we are trying to do as we pushed the girls they were able to see positive results. We have great leaders on this team who have great relationships with our youth program and hopefully one day they come back to United to see a program that has moved even farther forward and be proud they were the start of something special.” 

United returns many faces next year, this experience gained will undoubtedly contribute to their ability to make future seasons just as special.

CLIPPERS FALL JUST SHORT TO GILMOUR ACADEMY

COLUMBIANA OH-  Both Gilmour Academy and Columbiana had their offenses going on Thursday, but the Clippers eventually succumbed 9-7 in the high-scoring affair.

The Clippers lost despite out-hitting Gilmour Academy 11 to ten.

Gilmour Academy pulled away for good with eight runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Clare Peterson doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run, Sammi Fedeli grounded out, scoring one run, Madison Minotas reached on a dropped third strike, Laney Klika singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run, Megan Mlinaric singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, and Lauren Riccobelli singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.

Mlinaric pitched Gilmour Academy to victory. The fireballer lasted seven innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs while striking out four.

Tori Long took the loss for the Clippers. The righthander went five and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits and striking out four.

The Clippers socked one home run on the day. Long put one out in the fifth inning.

Columbiana tallied 11 hits in the game. Long, Julia Rapp, Ava Davanzo, Ella Dota, and Maryn Hepler each managed multiple hits, Hepler, Dota, Davanzo, Rapp, and Long each managed two hits to lead.

Gilmour Academy totaled ten hits. Klika, Mlinaric, and Riccobelli all managed multiple hits. Klika led with three hits in four at bats. Gilmour Academy stole five bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Klika led the way with two. Gilmour Academy was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Lily Prebul made the most plays with six.

IRISH HANDLE GILMOUR ACADEMY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline defeated Gilmour Academy 7-1 by consistently putting runs on the scoreboard on Tuesday night.

Ursuline pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Kyleigh Golden grounded out, scoring one run and Alyssa Sheely’s sac fly scored one run.

Mia Opalick was the winning pitcher for the Irish. Opalick lasted six innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out 13. Liza Barbato threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Ursuline smacked one home run on the day. Paige Ogden had a long ball in the sixth inning.

The Irish scattered seven hits in the game. Ogden and Layni Bednar each managed multiple hits. Bednar and Ogden each managed two hits to lead.

Ursuline is back in action Wednesday as they host Louisville at YSU Softball Complex.

INDIANS RUN AWAY FROM GILMOUR ACADEMY

GATES MILLS OH- It was a unique way to start the playoffs for Girard, not only did they have to hit the road but they also had to play on a Saturday afternoon due to the light situation in the stadium. None of that mattered to Girard however, they stormed to a huge 28-6 lead after just a quarter of play. They’d go on to dominate their way to 49-26 win.

Michael Palmer had a monster day for the Indians, the new 1,000 yard rusher gained 81 yards on 11 carries with 2 touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns. Nic Bengala went for 12/14 through the air with 274 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for 87 yards on 12 carries and 2 touchdowns.

Girard advances to play Perry in the next round of the OHSAA state playoffs. That game will be Friday at 7:00.

RAIDERS WALK IT OFF IN EXTRAS TO OUTLAST GILMOUR ACADEMY

MASSILLON OH-Brandon Mikos threw a shutout and Mike Perry came through in the clutch with a late walk-off single to lead South Range past Gilmour Academy 1-0 in 10 innings on Thursday.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Mikos struck out 17, while Gilmour Academy pitchers sat down five.

A single by Charlie Shepherd in the fifth inning was a positive for the Lancers.

Mikos earned the victory on the mound for South Range. The pitcher went ten innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out 17, and walking zero. He threw 127 pitches.

Paddy Murphy took the loss for Gilmour Academy. The bulldog lasted two innings, allowing two hits and one run.

Ben DeMell started the game for Gilmour Academy. The pitcher lasted seven and a third innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out five.

Mikie Perry went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Raiders in hits.

South Range advances to the regional championship on Saturday. They will play Canton Central Catholic at 3:00 at Massillon Washington High School.
