By Matt Maher

LIBERTY, OH – The Leopards welcomed the Red Devils to town for another installment of MVAC boys basketball where the 2nd best team in Campbell took down the 7th best team by the final score of 55-45. Both teams showed some great skill on the court but it would be the Red Devils spectacular rebounding and the great efforts of  David Moore and Teyon Harris Jr. that would be the key differences in this game.

Liberty showed they could tango with Campbell in the first where they were able to find 10 points to Campbells 14. The Leopards were led by Evan Bates who hit two 2’s and went 2-for-2 from the free throw line, an area he would excel at all evening. Campbell saw Moore put up 5 including a spectacular 3 and 2 of 2 made free throws. Harris found 4 points in the paint as well for the Red Devils.

David Moore would keep up his dominance by scoring 10 points in the 2nd quarter all within the arc with five 2’s. Harris would add a hard fought 2 into the mix as well. Liberty saw Adam Huynh step up with 5 points including his team’s first made 3 of the night! Luke Bates and Dearmani Franklin would both score a bucket each to get Liberty to their 9 points.

Liberty continued to stay close to Campbell after the break, scoring 8 points to Campbells 11, though their close quarters were still hurting Liberty’s chances. Evan Bates entered back on to the score sheet with 4 more points including 2 more made free throws. David Moore added 2 more points to his total and Harris found the other 9 points for his team with three 2’s and a decent 3-for-4 from the stripe.

The 4th quarter was the closest quarter we saw with both teams scoring 18 points. Moore would add 4 more points and finish with a team leading 21 points on the night. Josue Rodriguez would have a nice frame as well, scoring 5 points for his team and Harris would score 4 more points including 2 more from the line, he would finish with 19 points. Liberty saw Julius Ferrell put up a 3 and Brashawn Hicks and Luke Bates both scored 2 points but the difference maker was Evan Bates who found three 2’s and went 5-for-5 from the line finishing with 21 points on the night and 9-for-9 from the line!

Despite the individual boost from Evan Bates, Liberty couldn’t find enough consistency in the scoring department to top the Red Devils. David Moore and Jeyon Harris Jr. both deserve standing ovations after their performances on Tuesday night. the Red Devils (9-4, 6-1) will continue their road trip when they take on Newton Falls on January 19th at 7:00PM and Liberty (3-11, 1-6) will hit the road when they take on the Crestview Rebels on January 19th at 7:00PM.

LEOPARDS SLOWED DOWN BY MATHEWS

By Matt Maher

LIBERTY, OH – It was a slow night in Liberty as the Leopards hosted Matthews in a close contest that ended with the low score of 23-18 in favor of the Mustangs. Both teams seemed like mirror images of each other at times tonight as both teams struggled from beyond the arc and had their issues with fouls.

When you look at the fouls it took less than a minute for Liberty to find themselves on the wrong side of one and sent Ava Clayton to the line where she went 1-for 2 and put her team on top for a short while because Liberty saw Amari Brown and Qumara Watson both find quick buckets to gibe Liberty their first lead. Liberty sat on the 3 point lead for several minutes before Matthews found some momentum from the free throw line again where Marlee Ruiter went 3-for-4.

The Leopards would find more offense than the opposition by finding 5 points to Matthews 2. Kylee Thomas found 3 points with a made free throw and a good 2-pointer as well and Mia Parker found her first 2-points after failing to hit multiple 3’s. Matthews lone scorer would be Clayton. While Liberty’s offensive efforts were more fruitful it still wouldn’t be enough as they trailed 10-9 going into halftime.

These two teams continued to play a tight game in the third where we saw three different lead changes before ending the quarter tied up at 14 points each. Matthews found 4 more points with 2 coming from Katherine Rowan and Clayton. Liberty saw 5 much needed points come from the scoring talents of Thomas who hit 1 of 2 free throws and Brown who found the other 4 all from the field.

Mia Parker would find herself into a little groove in the 4th quarter where she would find the only 4 points for Liberty in the 4th with her first coming from a fantastic blocked pass in the offensive zone that she was able to turn into a beautiful partial breakaway bucket. While Parker started to shine for the Leopards the Mustangs had their highest scoring quarter of the game with 9 points found. Paddock and Brown both found 2 points each while Clayton continued her offensive tear finding 5 points with 2 made 2’s and another free throw.

Both teams had their struggles Wednesday night but that made for a close game that lived up to the hype going into it. Matthews would be the team to end up on top primarily because they were able to make necessary changes to their offense where Liberty continued to make the same plays that failed to produce points. Liberty showed resilience and grit in this close matchup which helped them in this close contest. Matthews will see action next when they host Pymatuning Valley on January 4th at 7:00PM and Liberty will host Champion on January 4th at 5:30PM.

LIBERTY, OH – Another night another dominant performance by the Rebels as Crestview came into Liberty and snagged a 60-15 victory from the leopards. Crestview was led by a dominant performance from Addison Rhodes who put up an impressive 22 points which was only seven points shy of matching Luvrain Gaskin’s 29 points against Girard on Tuesday night.

Liberty had their highest scoring quarter and put up six points combined including four from Kylee Thomas and a 2-point shot from Brookyn Barnette.

Crestview continued to stomp on the hardwood in the second with an impressive 25 points including nine from Rhodes and a pair of threes from Alexa DiCross and Kerrigan Miller, Luvrain Gaskins also went 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Liberty would only find a total of three points this quarter and they came from Mia Parker with a long 3-point shot.

The second half brought Crestview lowest scoring quarters thanks to their monstrous lead resulting in a running clock fairly early in the third. Luvrain gaskins would lead the charge this quarter finding three 2-pointers for six points. The other six came from Myer Miller who found a three and went 1-for-2 from the line and Rhodes who only found one 2-point bucket. Kylee Thomas was the only scorer for the Leopard’s who found a traditional bucket getting a 2-point shot to work the other 2 points came from Parker and Amari Brown who both went 1-for-2.

The fourth and final quarter saw 10 more points from Crestview with Rhodes connecting for 4 more to top off her night. Liberty, yet again, only had a single scorer here and this time two points came from a Thomas Bucket.

Crestview went into cruise control in the second half and drove out of Liberty with an impressive 60-15 win. The Rebels move to 4-0 on their season and 1-0 in conference play while the Leopards move to 0-4 and 0-1 in conference play. The Rebels hit the hardwood next on Saturday December 9th when they host East Liverpool at 12:30PM. The Rams showcased their offensive prowess, led by Ava Hulett, who delivered an impressive 20-point performance.
