QUAKERS DROP HOME OPENER TO MINERVA

SALEM OH-

A large well scattered crowd (including alumni players-thanks) attended Salem’s 2021 home softball debut. Thanks to a great job by our maintenance crew the field was in great shape and so was the weather.

Hannah Kelm was involved in 5 defensive chances with 0 errors. Jenna McClish made a nice catch on a screaming line drive to center.

LIONS RALLY FOR OPENING DAY WIN

East Palestine, OH- Baseball is back. The 2021 season got underway Saturday here at Next Level, home of Heartland Christian, and the home team Lions walked off with a 5-4 victory over the visiting Blue Devils from Western Reserve.
Senior standout Caleb Graft took the hill for Heartland and survived a challenging third inning to keep the LIons in striking distance through 5 1⁄3 innings. He struck out 12 before giving way to sophomore Drew Walker who finished the game to pick up the mound win.

Jake Papagallo had a strong start for the Blue Devils striking out six in his four innings. Nick Nemi took the loss.
Devin Sirota led the Lions’ offense with two hits, two runs scored, and an rbi. After scoring the game’s first run in the second, the senior kept his team alive with two outs and the bases empty in the decisive seventh inning rally. Trailing 4-2 entering the final frame, the Lions got within one after Aaron Gault singled and scored on a Graft sacrifice fly. Then, Sirota set up the dramatic ending as he singled, stole second, and scored on a two-strike base hit by Nate Garzanich to tie the game. With Garzanich at third, the Lions were once again down to their last strike when Joel Morgan ended it by beating the throw to first on a ground ball to shortstop.

Brock Miller had two hits for Western Reserve who will host LaBrae on Monday. The Lions are scheduled to host McDonald on Wednesday.

Tom Kling shortstop, Joel Morgan second base, Aaron Gault catcher, Zach Labon centerfield, Hayden Stewart left field, and Devin Sirota will man right field. The Lions have a lot of lettermen returning this season, something very new to this program as Coach Gault told us. This is the first year they have had upperclassmen in the program. Coach Gault talked about the hard work this guys have put into the program and how contagious it has been to all the new freshmen this year. Hard work always pays off and it’s a great way to start a program that only started in 2018 with this senior class.

BERTOVICH CALLS GAME IN LIONS WIN OVER JFK

Columbiana, OH- Jonathan Bertovich can be described as quiet and unassuming off the court, and he often tacitly performs his duties as Heartland Christian’s floor general as well. On Monday afternoon, a Presidents’ Day matchup between two Division IV teams hoping to make a deep run in the upcoming OHSAA playoffs, Heartland hosted Warren JFK in a thriller that ended with Bertovich calmly hitting a 30-foot jumper at the buzzer giving the Lions a 64-61 victory. “Silent Cal” Coolidge, would have been proud.

The first half was dominated by the Lions. Nate Garzanich carried the load in the first quarter hitting two threes, while the consistent efforts of Steven Baker and Joey Donofrio on both ends of the court led to a 32-19 Lions’ lead at the half. It was a half where the Eagles played well but couldn’t seem to buy a bucket. That would change.

The Eagles soared into the second half with a 26-point third quarter led by senior standout Cameron Hollobaugh. They trailed by just two, 47-45 heading to the fourth quarter. The game seemed destined for overtime after several lead changes in the final eight minutes. Twice JFK was able to take the lead only to see the Lions respond and lead 61-57 before the Eagles were able to knot it at 61 apiece with just seconds remaining setting the stage for the game-winner.

Coach Josh Scott drew up the play hoping to get Bertovich off a screen as the clock ran down, and he got just what he envisioned. The pristine looking silky smooth jumper from his sharp-shooting junior had that feel from the moment it left his hand.

Heartland was led in scoring by Joey Donofrio and Luke Reynolds with 14 each. Reynolds was outstanding throughout and was key to putting the Lions in position to win.

Hollobaugh led all scorers with 29 for JFK.
The Eagles dropped to 7-4, but their strong schedule has earned them a two-seed in their district bracket. The Lions improved to 15-4 and have earned the top seed in their bracket.

Brookfield comes to town to face the Lions on Thursday evening while Crestview will close out Heartland’s regular season on Saturday. Catch all the action on YSNLive.com
