ORANGE SNAPS 18-GAME SKID WITH OPENING NIGHT WIN

BEACHWOOD, OH- The Orange Lions open the season with 49-0 win over its arch-rival Beachwood at Beachwood High School.  The Lions took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field which ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Alex Ford.  Ford would not be done, as he added two more touchdown runs later in the game and threw for one touchdown.

The Lion’s defense would also make a stand, with Beachwood opening series, the Lions were able to force a bad snap that went out of the endzone to take 9-0 lead over the Bison. The Lions would keep Beachwood out of the scoring column to earn the shutout.

Alex Ford would finish the game with 79 yards rushing and was 4/5 throwing the football for 65 yards. The Lions held Beachwood to -16 yards of offense while the Lions amounted to 270 yards of offense.

The Lions will host Mineral Ridge on Friday in the team’s home opener.  The Rams won their first game 29-22 in the final seconds over Pymatuning Valley.

LEIKEN THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING

CLEVELAND, OH- Linday Leiken is a tone-setter.  A senior at Orange, Leiken has her eyes set  on taking the Lady Lions to new heights in 2023.

Hitting is going to be really big this year almost everyone on
the court is a really strong hitter and just that like that’s great, it’s nice because everybody can hit,” says Leiken.

HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MAGGIE MARTIN

COLUMBIANA OH- The lights inside Heartland Christian’s Purple Palace are starting to shine at night. That can only mean one thing during the month of August, the volleyball team is hard at work. With excitement around the program rising year by year Heartland will look to make a massive jump this season. Returning a ton of experience and leadership this one young team has now grown up into a dangerous group that has the confidence to win.  When you combine the experience with team leadership, and a strong program culture you get the makings of a solid volleyball team.

Head coach Maggie Martin is back for another year under the controls. She was kind enough to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about the upcoming season. SPARTANS COME OUT VICTORIOUS

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman opened up their home slate by beating Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Varsity Lions 6-1 on Thursday.

Gabi Sferra toed the rubber for the Spartans. She lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out an impressive 14 batters.

Alex Mould was on the rubber for Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. She allowed 12 hits and six runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Boardman racked up 13 hits in the game. Natalie Davis, Ava Freeborough, Cami Goske, and Tori Strines each managed multiple hits. Davis led with four hits in four at bats. Boardman was also sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Maddie Wymer had the most chances in the field with 16.

Boardman is scheduled to go back on the road Friday night as they travel to Green. First pitch is slated for 5:00.

SPARTANS SUPPLY PLENTY OF POWER

COLUMBIANA, OHIO- The Boardman Spartans grabbed an early lead on its way to a 14-2 victory over the Heartland Christian Lions Varsity on Tuesday.

The Spartans got things started early when they scored on an error and a sacrifice fly by Luke Leonard in the first inning. Boardman secured the victory thanks to ten runs in the second inning. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Ben Herrmann, Grayson Eicher, and Caleb Satterfield, a walk by Gavin Hyde, a groundout by Leonard, an error on a ball put in play by Herrmann, and a double by Dylan Barrett.

Hyde pitched the Spartans to victory as he lasted three innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out six. Kevin Pekkanen and Dom Lombardo entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Drew Walker took the loss for Heartland Christian Lions. The southpaw allowed seven hits and 11 runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one.

GAULT REIGNS AS 2023 BIG DOG OF THE YEAR

COLUMBIANA, OHIO- The Baird Brother Big Dog of the Year is a big opportunity for student athletes to show their true leadership to their team and the community that they are apart of. The Baird Brother Big Dog Award is decided by local fans who want to show their appreciation of a player in their community. For athletes to be in consideration for the Big Dog of the Year Award, they have to win a weekly poll in the regular season and as well as winning two different sets of polls against athletes that have also won the award.

After tallying up all of the votes, the winner of 2023  Baird Brother Big Dog of the Year is Drew Gault from the Heartland Christian Lions. Drew Gault has been one of the true leaders for the Lions this year and he is greatly appreciated by the Columbiana community. Congratulations once again to Drew Gault on winning the 2023 Baird Brothers Big Dog of the Year!

CHANEY KEEPS UP TOURNAMENT SUCCESS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Jason Hewlett and Clifton Scott would provide double doubles to propel the Chaney Cowboys (17-8) past the Orange Lions (8-17) and into the Division II – Northeast District 1 semi-finals.

It was all gas no brake from the jump for the three time defending district champion Chaney Cowboys. Leading the charge for the Red and White offensively in the first was football standout and Michigan commit, Jason Hewlett. The 6 foot 4 senior forward accounted for fifteen of the Cowboys twenty-three points in the first. Chaney would stifle Orange defensively, allowing just five points in the quarter.

The second saw the teams jostle at both ends. The Lions provided more offensively tallying ten points in the second, while the Cowboys would struggle offensively after Hewlett would pick up three consecutive fouls in less than a minute forcing him to the bench. Chaney would outscore Orange by two to take a 20 point lead into the break.

Breaking the half, Chaney picked up where they had left off back in the first quarter, dominating offensively and smothering Orange at the other end. Clifton Scott would lead the Cowboys in thethird with four made baskets from the inside while Hewlett would add four more, and Josiah Gonzalez had his highest scoring quarter of the night with five.

Orange would begin the fourth quarter trailing by thirty-four and staring a season ending loss. The Lions would provide their largest scoring quarter of the night with sixteen fourth quarter points, led by Ernest Pryor’s three made shots from beyond the arc. Clifton Scott would end the fourth with two more shots from inside, and ½ from the charity stripe falling a point shy of twenty, but still giving the Cowboys an easy victory, 71-38.

STILL DANCIN’

Chaney: Looking much improved from their opening round victory over Kenston, the competition level will begin to ramp up from here on out in the postseason. Of course, that’s nothing new for these Chaney Cowboys, a program that always touts one of the toughest schedules in the area.

The back-to-back-to-back district champion Cowboys will be in action on Thursday March 2ndat Boardman High School, where they will take on the #3 seed Alliance Aviators (15-8). The Aviators tied atop the EBC for the regular-season title, and earned their spot in the district semi’s with a 81-54 routing of Geneva. Alliance will be making their first appearance in the district final four, since 2017.

ORANGE MAKES PLAYS DOWN THE STRETCH

POLAND OHIO – If you love upsets this time of year on the hardwood, you got one Monday night. #24 Orange went into #16 Poland and snatched a 45-41 victory from the Bulldogs. Ernest Pryor came out focused, hitting an early three pointer to get the Lions going as he finished the game with 20 points. Poland’s offense answered the call as they evened up the score at the half. In a high scoring second half, Orange out scored Poland 30-26.

But what it came down to was big free throw making by Pryor and teammates Dominic Anekwe, Devin Belle and Henry Bonner. The Lions now shift their focus to Friday night for the sectional final game against Youngstown Chaney.

EAGLES HIT THEIR STRIDE

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO- The Valley Christian Eagles took on the visiting Heartland Christian Lions on senior night. In what was a close first quarter the Eagles led the Lions 16-15 at the end of the first quarter. From that point on it was all Valley Christian as they went off in the second quarter, scoring 26 points including five three pointers.

The Eagles led the Lions at the half 42-23. The Eagles were led by Jon’trell Mixon, who dropped 20 points, Jhordan Peete, with 14 points, Alijah Gibson and Raquan Bell had 11 points each to help the Eagles cause.

The Lions were led by Jake Walker and Will Morgan, who both had 14 points as the Lions made a little push in the fourth quarter but to no avail as they fell to the Eagles 69-54.

The Eagles will take on the Crestview Rebels on the road to finish out the regular season. The Lions will finish out the season against the Academy for Urban Scholars.

QUAKERS FIND A WAY TO GET THE EDGE

SALEM, OH- The Heartland Christian Lions traveled to take on the Salem Quakers, in what was a close matchup all the way to the end.

Drew Gault and Jake Walker led the Lions in scoring as Gault had 12 points and Walker finished the night with 10 points.

Salem was led by Lance Bailey, who dropped 20 points, Trent Fink and Cam Sampson finished the game with 12 points each.

The Quakers went on to win 61-59 and will look to keep their momentum going when they take on Hubbard on Friday. Heartland Christian will travel on the road to take on Valley Christian on Friday.
