CALL OF DUTY; BELL WINS BOWLING GREEN’S MEDAL OF HONOR

BOWLING GREEN, OH-  In a recent episode of YSN’s podcast, host DJ Yokley sat down with Logan Bell, the 2024 Medal of Honor recipient and Medal of Excellence winner from Bowling Green State University. Bell, a standout athlete from Lisbon David Anderson High School known for shattering records and later taking his talents to the baseball diamond, opened up about his journey, the essence of teamwork, and his aspirations for the future.

Bell’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field was recognized when he was awarded Bowling Green’s prestigious Medal of Honor. This accolade is not just a testament to his athletic prowess but also a nod to his leadership and community impact. Reflecting on the moment he found out about the award, Bell shared, “I’m very thankful to have been nominated and received the award, and I’m glad that I can represent BGSU in the way that it intends athletes to represent the school.”

Bell’s collegiate career was punctuated by significant challenges, including undergoing the harrowing experience of Tommy John surgery. “Relying on my parents and my faith to get me through those, that long summer and that long return to playing is kind of the biggest thing that has helped me,” stated Bell, emphasizing the support system that saw him through his trials.
He credits his never-give-up attitude to taking things one day at a time, focusing on each step of the recovery process rather than being overwhelmed by the road ahead.

Throughout the interview, Bell consistently highlighted the importance of being a good teammate, a philosophy he lives by. “It’s not about my accomplishments, it’s about the team’s accomplishments,” he profoundly iterated, reinforcing the message that individual recognition always takes a backseat to the collective success of his team.

Bell is no stranger to hardship. He discussed the numerous rejections he faced in high school, noting, “Pick out something that you see every day and write down your goals.” He added that resilience amid criticism is key – to see it as a means to enhance one’s capabilities instead of taking it personally.
As for his future, Bell is clear on his aspirations and pragmatic about the possible trajectories his baseball career could take. He spoke passionately about the prospect of winning a MAC championship and venturing into professional baseball. “Whether it takes me the next 20 years of my life or whether it takes me five years,” Bell mused, underlining his commitment to achieving what many only dream of.

Logan Bell’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and humility. Showcasing remarkable talent and a veteran’s poise, he serves as an embodiment of what it means to overcome adversity and emerge victorious. Bell exhibits the heart and hustle of a true champion, and according to DJ Yokley, he does it all while sporting a work-in-progress mustache.

In the world of collegiate athletics, where stars shine bright, Bell is undoubtedly one of the luminaries guiding the way for future generations.Bell’s story serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere — fight for your dreams, lean on your community, strive for excellence, and remember that the journey is every bit as significant as the destination.

LO AND BEHOLD: BELL LIVING HIS DREAM

BOWLING GREEN, OH- When Logan Bell was just a freshman at Lisbon’s David Anderson High School, you knew the potential was there for something special.  What we didn’t know at the time was just how special one young man from small-town America could be.

Years later we know that the Blue Devil Boomerang Ballplayer was just as valuable in and for his community as he was on the playing surface.  Logan continued a long-living legacy that began generations before he was even born of contributing to his community in all ways possible.  Involvement was in the lifeblood of his family’s DNA and continues to and through this day.

Logan could always be found somewhere on a roster through high school.  Football, basketball, and of course baseball were the ones he was involved in, but also being able to settle in the crowds and cheer from the seats for his friends and classmates letting them know their value- and his appreciation for their skills and talents as well.

That’s Logan.  Always there, forever positive, and a one-in-a-million man.

Nowadays, Logan finds himself living the dream he fought for so hard through those days at DAHS but sees his journey through a different lens.  One of which he’ll continue to bet on himself because others have as well.  Although he never seems to show the pressure of carrying those dreams with him, Logan plans for success and carries those very plans out the same way he does everything else- with a smile on his face.

We caught up with the Falcon flamethrower to discuss baseball, his family, and so much more.

ANSWERING THE BELL

It’s been a journey in 2019 for Logan Bell, but one that he’s learned from and grown from to become an Ace for seemingly any team he joins.  Lisbon’s standout pitcher rewrote the record books at his now alma mater, and while that was enough to drive him- the chip on his 6’3 200-pound frame comes from the adversity he’s faced.

Bell will tell you that he’s not the naturally gifted type of athlete, he’s worked (and outworked) his opponents to earn everything he’s been afforded to this point.  The early morning workouts, the late-night study sessions to become a Division 1 recruit and eventually landing at the University of Akron to help rebuild their baseball program.

A fourth-generation Lisbon Blue Devil athlete, Bell showed Astro Falcon Manager Don Pletcher all he needed to see both on the mound and in the dugout.  Bell is one of the rare pitchers that show up in support of his teammates on the days he isn’t pitching.  His demeanor, leadership, and commitment to his team has not only solidified the spot on this ultra-talented roster but has earned him the reputation of being one of the best teammates some have ever had.

“Logan’s a sponge, he’s always asking questions and picking the brains of coaches and players between starts,” said Astro Manager Don Pletcher.  “Logan wants the ball, and he’s a gamer but what impresses me is how he’s constantly showing up and asking how he can support the team in any capacity, a manager’s dream,” added Pletcher.

Bell finished the summer session a perfect 9-0 for the Astro Falcons and was able to live out his dream of opening up the Palomino World Series and facing international competition while blanking Mexico.

Our Mark Franken caught up with Logan Bell after an incredible 2-hitter against Mexico in Laredo in this special Player Profile presented by R.L. Craig Inc. : Answering The Bell

PALOMINO: BELL AND BURKE STEAL THE SHOW IN BLANKING MEXICO

LAREDO, TX-  Youngstown’s Astro Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-0 victory over Mazatlan, Mexico here Friday morning.  The game was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule being in effect. It was the first game of the Palomino World Series, a double-elimination tournament that includes teams from North America, Europe, and Asia.

Logan Bell was masterful, allowing just two hits over the six innings while striking out six and walking none.  He allowed just two base runners to reach scoring position as the Mexican team struggled to make solid contact throughout.

The Astro offense struck right away in the bottom of the first.  Chase Franken and Ricky Havrilla walked setting the table for Burke Camper who had his first of three hits on the day.  Lucas Gulczinski’s sacrifice fly plated camper to give Youngstown a 3-0 lead. Havrilla then drove in Franken with a two-out RBI single in the second.  Camper then blew the game open in the fifth with a two-run blast over the wall in left scoring Franken who had tripled. The Astro Falcons ended it in the sixth with four more runs.  Braeden O’Shaughnessy and Connor Miller singled before that Camper kid ended it with his third hit and fourth run batted in. Franken scored four runs from the leadoff spot. Bryan Rivas and Leonardo Benites had singles for Mexico.

Youngstown will face the West Zone champion Santa Clara tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CST.  Win or lose they will play a second game later in the day. You can catch all the action at YSNlive.com as we will live stream Youngstown throughout the tournament.

RED MEETS BLUE: BELL, FRANKEN ARE ALL-OHIO

COLUMBUS, OH- Two of the area’s top stars have gained some deserving accolades earlier this week.  Lisbon’s Logan Bell and Columbiana’s Chase Franken were chosen as All-Ohioan’s at their respective levels.

Logan Bell was chosen as First Team in Division IV and represented the Northeast in their selections.  Bell boasted a 7-2 record this season with a 0.91 ERA in just over 60 innings of work.  He also shattered Lisbon school records for strikeouts in a game (18) and in a season (131).  Bell’s numbers at the plate were just as impressive with a .506 batting average in 2019 which ties a school record as well.

Those numbers are no surprise when you take a look at the University of Akron recruit’s career marks for strikeouts (311) and ERA at 1.59.

“Logan is a great student of the game.  He is always thinking about ways to achieve greater success…constantly asking questions, helping the pitcher that day with things he sees from the dugout.  He is truly a player young guys can look at as a great role model and I’m so happy he’s on my side, and not against.” says Bell’s summer league coach, Don Pletcher of the Astro Falcons.

Columbiana’s Chase Franken was also selected as All-Ohio as Honorable Mention in Division III.  Columbiana’s record holder for doubles, triples, and runs is stacking awards from all over and is just getting ready to become a senior in 2020.  This year, Franken posted a minuscule 0.74 ERA with 75 strikeouts to coincide.  Offensively, he led the Clippers in every category but runs batted in.  A .443 average that included a pair of home runs, a dozen doubles, six triples, and 21 steals.  Franken still feels his senior season could be his best yet.

“Chase is a dirt-dog.  He will use every tool in his belt to succeed.  He is the best second baseman in the league, and looks to other players for guidance, and will follow in their footsteps when he plays at the D1 level.” added Franken’s summer manager, Pletcher.

You can catch both Bell and Franken playing this summer in the Youngstown Class B league for the Astro Falcons.

Congratulations to both on stellar seasons, and best of luck to both as they transition to summer ball.

AKRON ANSWERS THE BELL

LISBON,OH- What was a rollercoaster of emotions for Lisbon’s Logan Bell quickly turned into a dream come true.

The Lisbon Ace signed on with Chris Sabo’s University of Akron Baseball team officially on Monday. Bell has solid career numbers as a Blue Devil with an 18-6 record, 1.67 ERA, and 180 strikeouts to his credit. Logan also has paced the offense with his offense with a career .387 batting average with 58 RBI including 3 HR.

Bell looks to take the hill at the next level with his blazing 90 MPH fastball, and his bucket of off-speed that keeps hitters guessing. He will also serve as a foundational piece of the reformed Akron Baseball team that last played in 2015.

Logan will also be studying numbers off the field as he plans on majoring in accounting.

From all of us at YSN, we wish Logan the best of luck at the next level as a Zip.
