PROCICK RUNS THE POINT

LOWELLVILLE OH- When talking to Lowellville head coach Lisa Modelski before the start of the season, the biggest thing she wanted to see out of her team was consistent confidence.  But where does confidence come from? Usually it starts with a captain, the point, the tip of the sword, the player who you know no matter what the situation may be, expects to perform.  For Lowellville that driving force is Savannah Procick.  She is without a doubt one of the stand out leaders of the Rockets team, and that’s because she has experience leading all kinds of different avenues.  Savannah leads on the volleyball court, she leads on the track, she leads an entire fanbase while she cheers, and she leads a basketball team.

Procick gained a huge source of confidence at the end of last season when the Rockets traveled to Badger in a tournament game. The odds were not in their favor. Badger was a favorite to not just win that game, but run away with the entire bracket.  The Rockets though never heard the odds. Savannah Procick didn’t get that memo.  They stormed the gates in Badger and came up with a huge overtime upset.  That proved to everyone who was returning on that roster that they could square up with anyone.  It also taught Procick to keep driving against the odds.

Procick took the time to tell us more about her busy athletic life. She sat down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig for our latest Lowellville Girls Basketball Player Profile.  They talk about balancing all the sports she plays, how she has grown into such a strong leader, and so much more! Don’t miss this great interview exclusively on YSN!

MULLEN AND BRUNGARD LEAD THE WAY FOR THE TIGERS

LOWELLVILLE, OH- The Springfield Tigers and the Lowellville Rockets met on Thursday night in MVAC play. The Tigers came out strong to start the ballgame, and kept that lead the entire way to come out victorious by 23.

Springfield started the first quarter on a 6-0 run, until the Rockets started to come alive from three point range knocking down two three’s from Francesca Lellio and Averi Shumaker. Springfield senior Jacey Mullen scored 10 out of the 16 first quarter points to lead by 10, 16-6 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Tigers outscored the Rockets 18-9 to lead 34-15 at the half.

LOWELLVILLE WAKES UP AND THEN TAKES OFF

BERLIN CENTER OH- It wasn’t the start that Lowellville imagined to the game on Tuesday, but they definitely finished it the right way.  In Western Reserve a slightly short handed Blue Devils team was geared up for an upset. Their initial game plan to keep Lowellville out of the paint was working to perfection. The Rockets high powered offense was kept quiet for a big chunk of the first half. They only had 9 points in the first quarter.  Their defense held strong though and didn’t let Reserve take advantage of their slow start.  After leading 9-8 after one, Reserve opened the second on a 7-3 run taking a 15-12 lead with a Luke Henning three.  Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, that three served as smelling salts for the Rockets. They went on a tear almost immediately ending the half on a 12-0 run to lead 24-15 at the break.  The Rockets would continue that run into the second half as it extended to 28-2 to make their lead as big as 40-17.  They’d go on to get a comfortable road win 58-29.

Anthony Lucente led the Rockets rampage with double figures getting 13 points.  Alex Modelski was able to grab an impressive 9 points on the way to the win.  Ryan Hvisdak also worked his way to a 9 point evening.  Vinny Ballone did solid work inside as he scored 8 points. Henning led the Blue Devils with 8 points.

Lowellville will return home on Friday as they host Springfield.  Western Reserve hits the road as they go to Ram’s country to take on Mineral Ridge.

VIKINGS USE BIG SECOND HALF TO ESCAPE LOWELLVILLE

Thursday night saw conference competition continue in The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC), with two solid programs on the Scarlet Division side of the conference in The Waterloo Vikings and The Lowellville Rockets, who were set to square-off in their second and final regular-season meeting. Despite losing some key pieces a year ago, Coach Modelski and company still brought forth a competitive squad that sported a respectable 7-7 record heading into Thursday night. On the other side, Waterloo would be fresh off their first conference loss of the season to The Springfield Tigers, leaving The Vikings looking for a bounce back game.

The first quarter looked eerily similar to that of the previous four that fans in Atwater had to witness against Springfield. Following an opening three pointer by Kaylee Webb,  the distance shots would not continue to fall. This allowed The Rockets to blast off to an 11-5 lead after one quarter of play. Flipping the script, quite literally, Waterloo battled back and won the second quarter by a similar score of 11-5, thus meaning the two programs were knotted up 16-16 at the halftime buzzer. The first 16 minutes of play saw defense take center stage, with girls like Savannah Procick and Lily Vari-Coppola shutting down the fastbreak opportunities for Waterloo and Frankie Lellio using incredible form with her shot to lead The Rockets in scoring and had Lowellville putting The Vikings on upset alert!

During the break, Coach Longanecker preached shooting the ball and being more aggressive in scoring opportunities. Ask and The Vikes shall deliver, grabbing the lead with an emphatic 8-0 run to start the quarter, Waterloo would grab a second half lead and never look back. Shots were starting to fall and Kaira English looks to be back at 100% and has returned to form with the level of play we saw from her last year. Other girls like Portage County Three Point Leader Abby Mazur, who helped spread the floor with her presence, paired with some more key swishes outside the arc from freshman Bayley English. Out scoring The Rockets in the second half 32-19 and 43-24 from the second quarter on, the big runs allowed Waterloo to add their tenth victory of the season by a final score of 48-35.

The win for Waterloo (10-5)(6-1) keeps them one back of conference leader Springfield, but The Vikings will have their hands full, traveling to Berlin Center on Thursday, January 19th in their second bout with The Blue Devils! Following the loss for Lowellville (7-8)(2-5) will also be traveling to Western Reserve (9-4)(4-2); however, their matchup will be featured a little later on Monday, January 23rd!
