VIKINGS USE BIG SECOND HALF TO ESCAPE LOWELLVILLE

Thursday night saw conference competition continue in The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC), with two solid programs on the Scarlet Division side of the conference in The Waterloo Vikings and The Lowellville Rockets, who were set to square-off in their second and final regular-season meeting. Despite losing some key pieces a year ago, Coach Modelski and company still brought forth a competitive squad that sported a respectable 7-7 record heading into Thursday night. On the other side, Waterloo would be fresh off their first conference loss of the season to The Springfield Tigers, leaving The Vikings looking for a bounce back game.

The first quarter looked eerily similar to that of the previous four that fans in Atwater had to witness against Springfield. Following an opening three pointer by Kaylee Webb,  the distance shots would not continue to fall. This allowed The Rockets to blast off to an 11-5 lead after one quarter of play. Flipping the script, quite literally, Waterloo battled back and won the second quarter by a similar score of 11-5, thus meaning the two programs were knotted up 16-16 at the halftime buzzer. The first 16 minutes of play saw defense take center stage, with girls like Savannah Procick and Lily Vari-Coppola shutting down the fastbreak opportunities for Waterloo and Frankie Lellio using incredible form with her shot to lead The Rockets in scoring and had Lowellville putting The Vikings on upset alert!

During the break, Coach Longanecker preached shooting the ball and being more aggressive in scoring opportunities. Ask and The Vikes shall deliver, grabbing the lead with an emphatic 8-0 run to start the quarter, Waterloo would grab a second half lead and never look back. Shots were starting to fall and Kaira English looks to be back at 100% and has returned to form with the level of play we saw from her last year. Other girls like Portage County Three Point Leader Abby Mazur, who helped spread the floor with her presence, paired with some more key swishes outside the arc from freshman Bayley English. Out scoring The Rockets in the second half 32-19 and 43-24 from the second quarter on, the big runs allowed Waterloo to add their tenth victory of the season by a final score of 48-35.

The win for Waterloo (10-5)(6-1) keeps them one back of conference leader Springfield, but The Vikings will have their hands full, traveling to Berlin Center on Thursday, January 19th in their second bout with The Blue Devils! Following the loss for Lowellville (7-8)(2-5) will also be traveling to Western Reserve (9-4)(4-2); however, their matchup will be featured a little later on Monday, January 23rd! BLUE DEVILS BUST IN ON LOWELLVILLE

LOWELLVILLE OH- This Rivalry has been around since the mid 2000s with both teams getting the upper hand during the decades.  However for the Lady Rockets of Lowellville, they haven’t beaten the Blue Devils of Western Reserve since 2012 and were looking to end that losing streak.  That would fall short on Thursday as the Lady Blue Devils came around, continuing the streak alive winning 54-40.

Leading the pack was Alyvia Hughes with 19 points on the floor, hitting two important three point shots in the later part of the fourth.  That was followed by Lisa Eichert with 13 points, Madison Leone with nine points, Brooke Schantz with five, Angelina Cappabianca with four, Lindsay Jones with three, and Alex Abrams with a free throw.

For the Lady Rockets, it was 10 points for Serinna Tych and Averi Schumaker.  Nine points for Savannah Procick, five for Isabella Willrich, two points for Lily vari-Coppola and Joslyn Delsignore and Alyssa Kuzan with a point.  The Lady Blue Devils (4-2) will face off against the SouthEast Lady Pirates at noon on Saturday.  Lowellville (3-4) will head to New Middletwon to take on Springfield.

After, ian O’Brien caught up with head coach Steve Miller and player of the game Alyvia Hughes after the big performance.

THERES NO SLOWING DOWN LOWELLVILLE

NORTH JACKSON OH- Lowellville is a team with high expectations this year inside the MVAC.  There are a lot of preseason polls that have the Rockets finishing at the top of the conference. Some trams may let the outside pressure to succeed get to them, but that’s not how the Rockets fly. They came in to Tuesday night with a record of 3-0, and showed no signs of slowing down as their balanced offense ran loose on Jackson Milton in a 81-43 win.

The Rockets had five players finish in double figures.  The leader of the scoring was Ryan Hvisdak finishing with 18.  Anthony Lucente was just as impressive as he put in 15 points.  Right behind him was Mark Dubas with 14 points.  Rounding out the Rockets in double figures were both Michael and Vinny Ballone. They both finished with 11.

Jackson Milton got a good offensive contribution from Aaren Romigh who worked his way to 18.  Ryan Romigh was also in double figures with the Blue Jays with 13 points.

Lowellville will take their undefeated record forward and return to action Friday as they host Western Reserve.  Jackson Milton get back to work on Friday as they host Sebring.

A MILESTONE MOMENT TO START THE YEAR

LOWELLVILLE OH- The start of a new season is always exciting. However in Lowellville the adrenaline was pushed to the max as Vinny Ballone went for 1,000 career points. The future Rocket hall of famed needed 14 points coming in to the night to seal the deal. He doubled that goal finishing with 28 in the Rockets 67-45 win over Crestview.

At halftime, Ballone went to the locker room with 13 points knowing his next bucket would be a special one. He didn’t have to wait too long as his next shot came to start the third quarter.  Ballone is now the 14th Rocket in the basketball program (boys and girls) to eclipse 1,000 points.

Lowellville is off until next week when they travel to Southeast. Crestview is back in action on Friday at Jackson Milton.

LOWELLVILLE BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT OLSON

LOWELLVILLE OH- The old saying goes “success breeds success.” The Lowellville Rockets are certainly hoping that rings true this winter. Their football team is coming off of one of the best seasons their program has ever had. With a ton of those players popping up on the Rockets basketball roster, you can see why people are excited. But that’s not the only reason anticipation isn’t building around this program. The Rockets have seen plenty of success in years past. Last season Lowellville finished with a record of 20-5. Any time you win 20 games in basketball you’re doing something right. This year the Rockets open the season on November 29th at home against Crestview. Last year they beat Crestview 59-53 in the season opener.

Rockets head coach Matt Olson was gracious enough to take some time to help us preview their season. He talks with YSN’s Ty Bartell about the returning stars of the team, what the standard of the program has been set at, and so much more. Take off with the Rockets and check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Matt Olson.

ROCKETS START SEASON RED HOT

LOWELLVILLE OH- After a near underdog playoff push last season, the lady Lowellville Rockets looked to get back on track under coach Leah Modelski.  Their first challenge of the season was against a team looking to rebuild in John Childers’ very own Lady Red Devils of Campbell Memorial.  Both of these two teams have met five times in a row from 2016 to 2020 with the Rockets winning them all.  This time, could the Lady Red Devils get the upset and put the Mahoning Valley Conference Grey and Scarlet tiers on notice.

Unfortunately, that would not be the case as this one was all Rockets from start to finish.  One of the biggest losses for the Red Devils in this game was at the end of the first where star point guard and senior Madison Shuger landed awkwardly and had to be attended to.  She would not return to the game.  Meanwhile on the Rockets side, Savannah Procick scored the most points with 12, alongside Serinna Tych, as the passing and shooting was working all night long.  This was followed by ten points off the bench by Morgan Lewis, eight points by Francesca Lellio, six points by Lily Vari-Coppola, four points by Averi Shumaker and two points for both Michelle Cavna and Joslyn Delsignore.  Finally, sophomore Alyssa Kuzan scored a point too.  While that happened, Campbell at one point was able to cut it down to under 20, only giving up four points in the later part of the second quarter, but would fall apart defensively.  Scoring wise, their highest player would be junior forward Diamon Sims with four points.  That was then followed up by Cha’Daeja Marshall and Angeliz Diaz both scoring two points.

With that, it was not enough for the lady Red Devils to mount a comeback as the Lowellville Lady Rockets, start the season off with a big 57 to 8 victory against the Lady Red Devils of Campbell Memorial.  Lowellville (1-0, 0-0 in Scarlet Tier) will now have a rematch with the Lady Panthers of Bristol at Bristolville, a rematch from the district semifinals where they lost to the Panthers 69-33.  That game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6;15.  Campbell (0-1, 0-0 in Gray Tier) will host the Chaney Cowgirls on Monday at 5:30.  After the game, YSNs Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Modelski about the big win and what to expect for Tuesday’s matchup against Bristol.

LOWELLVILLE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH LISA MODELSKI

LOWELLVILLE OH- Basketball season is almost here.  As the dates go by and we get closer, we continue to preview the season. Lowellville’s girls program is an interesting one to look at.  Watching them last year, you can tell they have the ability to make waves. Although they lose a chunk of their consistent scoring from a year ago, this season they return a lot of talent, and experience.  The Rockets were 10-12 last season, and got a huge tournament win on the road at Badger.  They’ll take the momentum of that win into this year. They open the season at home against Campbell on November 18.

Head coach Lisa Modelski took the time to sit down with Anthony Hartwig to give us a preview of their season.  They talk about key members of their roster, what the biggest strength of the team will be, and so much more. Be ready for the season by checking out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Lisa Modelski

CAMPBELL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT ON SENIOR NIGHT

CAMPBELL OH- Campbell is getting into a groove at the right time. They came in to Tuesday night on a 4 game winning streak. They easily made it 5 in a row as they hosted Lowellville on senior night. The Devils took the match in straight sets as they honored lone senior Angeleah Matzye.  Campbell has now won 7 of their last 8 matches.

Kendall Brunn led the offense with 12 kills.  Cyra Cross had her hands in the stat sheet as well finishing with 8 kills.  Carla Ramirez Ortiz kept setting up the offense well and finished with 32 assists.  She completed another double double with 10 digs.  Gabriella Villanueva Santos led the defense with 12 digs.

RAMS FINISH OFF PERFECT MVAC SEASON

LOWELLVILLE OH- Mineral Ridge faced their last league opponent on Saturday as they looked to remain perfect in conference play.  They were able to sweep Lowellville to end their MVAC season with no losses.   With the victory the Lady Rams improve to a season record of 19-1 and finished with an undefeated conference record of 14-0.

The Rams were led by Gianna Paris with 27 assists, 2 aces and 1 kill, Faith Schneider with 18 kills and 16 digs, and Ava Hulett with 21 digs and 11 kills.

Mineral Ridge returns home on Tuesday as they meet up with Brookfiekd in a cross tier MVAC matchup.

ROCKETS DON’T WAIVER ONE BIT

MCDONALD, OH- With Lowellville still unbeaten and almost no one to stop them, they’re sitting comfortably up at the top heading into the last few weeks of the regular season. But, they did have a tall task in front of them in McDonald Friday night as the Blue Devils hosted the Rockets in week 8 action. Lowellville came into Friday night’s matchup looking for their first win at McDonald since 2002. McDonald made the opening portion of the passing game tough for Lowellville by keeping that in check. But just like any other great balanced team does, the Rockets found success in their running game to roll past McDonald with a 36-13 victory.

The Rockets came out firing quickly on the ground with scores by Marcus Dubos, and Santino Rivera-Ocasio. Vinny Ballone then added a quick passing touchdown to Brady Bunofsky to push their lead to 21-0. A safety forced by Bunofsky and an immediate Ballone rushing touchdown then put the Rockets up by 29 going into half. Although McDonald would have some push back in the second half, the rolling offense and tough defense for Lowellville secured the victory.

For Lowellville, Ballone was 16/27 for 185 yards in the air and 33 on the ground with 2 TDs. Rivera-Ocasio finished with 27 yards on 8 carries. Marcus Dubos had 44 rushing yards on 5 carries. Bunofsky came down with 7 receptions for 84 yards and 2 TDs.
Lowellville will move to 8-0 on the season going into week 9 as they will travel to Mineral Ridge on Friday. McDonald will move to 2-6 and will host Waterloo Friday night.
