REBELS BATTLE BACK AGAINST RESERVE

COLUMBIANA OH- It was an exciting Saturday matinee in Crestview as the Rebels took a five set thriller against Western Reserve (25-19 11-25 25-16 23-25 15-10).

The Rebels opened set one in a quick hole, down 4-0 before they could blink. That four point lead last until the 11-7 mark, then the Rebels turned it on. Lucy Montgomery got her foul kills in the set in a quick burst and just like that it was tied. The Rebels controller the set from that point. Outscoring the Devils 14-8 the rest of the way. They’d take set 1 25-19.

The Blue Devils didn’t crumble under the didsapointment though. In fact, they did the opposite and dominated set two. Mostly off the incredible serving of Alyvia Hughes, the Devils rolled to a 25-11 set two win.

The Rebels returned the favor and dominated set three. The match was the truest representation of back and forth. 25-16 was the score of set three.

Set four was the most competitive. The Devi’s took an early lead, and held it to 13-8. Then the Rebels responded with a 6-0 run and took a 14-13 lead. The set went completely back and forth after that. Reserve got the clutch points down the stretch and took a 25-23 victory to force a decisive set 5.

Crestview beat the odds to win set five, you don’t often see a team drop set four and respond to win set five. It’s hard to stifle the other team’s momentum and stop them from starting the shorter set fast. The Rebels were able to do that though as they answered each Reserve point to start. Tied up at 3, Crestview took a 7-0 run to grab control. It was 14-7 before Reserve avoided three match points in a row before falling 15-10.

Montgomery  collected a triple double for Crestview with 19 kills, 22 assists, and 19 digs. Grace Auer also had a triple double with 19 kills, 20 assists, and 14 digs. Molly Emch finished with 8 kills, and 4 blocks. Kendra Greaves finished with 16 digs.

The first set was a thriller. After the Potters jumped out to a 9-4 lead, the Rebels came back and tied it at 9. From that point on the Potters lead didn’t go over two until they led 23-20. Even then, the Rebels fought back and made it 23-22 before the Potters made the plays needed to win 25-23.

For sets two and three the dominance of East Liverpool captain Sharnae Wilson proved too much for the Rebels to match. Wilson had 19 kills on the night, and just 1 attack error. That’s a hitting percentage of .818. Kyia White added 9 kills for the Potters. Addison Galeoti led in digs with 11.

CRESTVIEW‘S RUN UPENDED BY BLUE DEVILS

Crestview saw their season come to a close on Thursday night with a three set loss to Independence. (22-25 4-25 8-25)

The energy in the gym at Barberton High School was ramped up after a thrilling match to start the night. Crestview and Independence saw their start time pushed back about 45 minutes because of the length of match one. The wait didn’t affect either team in set one as it was highly contested. After being tied 5-5, Independence took a 9-5 lead and seemed to have momentum. The Rebels came marching back getting it to 7-9. They stayed in striking distance until they finally saw room to make a run and tie the set at 16-16. The Rebels would take an 18-17 lead later on and looked to be on their way. With the set tied at 20-20 by far, the longest rally of the night went the way of the Blue Devils, and they used that to rattle off 3 in a row. With set point at 24-21, the Rebels were only able to get one point back before bowing out of set one 22-25. Although they stayed close and made some clutch points, the Rebels offense struggled in set one. They only gathered 4 kills, and finished with a .000 hitting percentage.

Min set two that lack of offense would catch up with the Rebels in a haunting way. The Devils aired up their errors and played crystal clean volleyball. The Rebels could not get any traction once this high powered Blue Devils team got rolling. They were like a freight train each swing getting harder than the last. The Rebels tried calling timeouts, tried to get their energy up but it was to no avail as the Devils have clear momentum in the set.

That momentum did not go anywhere in set three, as the Devils jumped out to a 9-2 lead. That quickly ballooned into a bigger lead. The Rebels showed some fight and pride as they went on a couple of small runs towards the end. Tess Neville hammered away what would end up being her last kill as a Rebel late in the set. The Devils persisted and took set three 25-8.

Tess Neville led a struggling offense with 2 kills, Brenna Auer also added 2 kills. Lucy Montgomery had 7 assists.

The Rebels end their season at 24-2. Coach Auer had five powerful words for her team that echoed through the gym. “This doesn’t define our season.” The Rebels win a district championship for the first time since 2016 and put their program back on the map.

REBELS CLAIM THE CROWN ADVANCE TO REGIONALS

The stage was set Saturday afternoon for a matchup between two powerhouse volleyball programs. Since 2012 South Range and Crestview have accounted for 4 of the 7 district champions. That being said, neither team had won since 2016, and both teams were excited to be back.

The first set was a wild one. Exactly what you’d expect from these two programs. Crestview opened up with a big 6-1 lead, the Raiders fought back and tied the set at9. The Raiders then took a 16-13 lead and looked like they had control of the set. The Rebels would not be denied though and went on a 5-0 rally to go ahead 18-16. After the Raiders tied it again at 18-18 both teams traded points up to 20-20. An Anna Primavera ace gave the Raiders a 21-20 lead. The Rebels then rattled off 4 points in a row to grab set point at 24-20. The Raiders still fought grabbing two in a row to make 24-22 but the Rebels managed to grab the set 25-22.

Winning such a dramatic back and forth set one propelled the Rebels to a dominate set two. Everything was working for the Rebels offense. Even though the Raiders actually hit a higher attack percentage in set two, they never could get close to Crestview who rolled 25- 13.

When the Rebels came out in set three it looked certain that they were going to cruise to a third set win. The Rebels jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead. The Raiders however never let the lead get bigger than 6 in the set. They chipped away at the lead constantly staying in striking distance. But unlike set one, the Raiders couldn’t push ahead of the Rebels. The closest they got to the Rebels was three. Crestview closed out the set on a Raiders service error to take the set, the match, and the championship. The set scores were (25-22 25-13 25-21).

For the Raiders leading the way were Anna Primavera and Abby George who each had 6 kills.  Primavera added an ace and 5 digs, George added 2 blocks. Emily Irons finished with 19 assists, 6 digs, and 3 aces. Reagan Irons had 11 digs.

Crestview was led by Tess Neville who had a monstrous 18 kills. She also added 2 aces and 7 digs. Sidney Rambo was also in double figures with 10 kills adding a block, 3 digs, and 4 assists. Lucy Montgomery finished with a double-double having 35 assists and 12 digs. Amelia Montgomery had 17 digs.

Crestview advances to the regional semifinals on Thursday, October 31st at 7:30 vs the winner of Independence vs Brookside. That match will be at Barberton High School.

SHOUT OUTLOUD; REBELS PUNCH TICKET TO DISTRICT FINAL

SALEM, OH- The Crestview Volleyball program hasn’t won a district championship in three seasons. That was when the current senior class were freshman. The hungry group got one step closer Wednesday night with a three-set win over Waterloo. (25-20 25-19 25-16).

In set one Crestview had to navigate some tightness. Waterloo jumped out to an early lead with the help of several unforced errors. After a timeout, the Rebels stepped up their game. Tess Neville carried the Rebels through with 5 kills in the set. Once Crestview caught their stride, there was nothing Waterloo could do. Set one went to the Rebels by a score of 25-20.

The Rebels continued to dominate as set two went on. The Rambo sisters caused havoc in the front row. With a combination of them, Neville, and Molly Emch the impressive blocking of Waterloo was stretched too thin. Emch was given plenty of one on one opportunities and won most of them. Rebels rolled again in set two 25-19.

By set three Waterloo’s fatigue got the better of them. They had been chasing the Rebel hitters across the net all night and now they just couldn’t get into position. The Rebels took full advantage of this and kicked their aggressiveness to a new gear. They caught the Vikings on their heels and finished set three, and the sweep quickly 25-16.

The Rebel kills were well spread out, Shelby Rambo led with 10 kills, her sister Sidney had 8. Three Rebels finished with 7 kills. Tess Neville added 2 aces. Molly Emch along with her 7 kills had 3 blocks. Brenna Auer added 8 digs to her 7 kills. Lucy Montgomery finished with 29 assists and 3 digs. Amelia Montgomery finished with 12 digs.

Crestview moves on to play South Range in the district championship game. That match will be Saturday, October 26th at 2:30 at Salem High School.
