TAKING THE POINT

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- How many times can you say you see a player shine her brightest while not playing her natural position? When you make the trip to Springfield, you’ll find that their point guard Madi Lesnak has done just that.  The Tigers have quickly become one of the most dominant teams in the YSN family over the last two seasons. One of the biggest keys to their success was that Madi Lesnak took a step outside her comfort zone and took over the position of point guard. Simply put, it was what her team needed.  Filling that role was one of the first things head coach John Matisi thought about when he took over the job.  He saw something in Madi that she might not have even seen in herself.  The ability to run an offense.  Fast forward to this season Madi’s senior season and not only has she taken over the point guard role, but she has excelled at it.

Madi has used this experience of morphing into whatever her team needs to set a great example to the players she leads. For her, it’s not about what she wanted or was comfortable with, it’s about what she can do to make the team better.  That example is going to pay dividends for the Tigers in the future.  It won’t be hard to tell a player to sacrifice for the team when they’ve seen one of the most talented players on the roster do the same.  You see Madi has the basketball ability to score 15 points per game if she wanted to, but like all great point guards, she sacrifices about 8 points per game to make the offense run like a well oiled machine.

Lesnak was kind enough to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about this transition, and her senior season.  She also lets us in on some things about herself off the court, some future plans, and so much more.  Check out the latest Springfield Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN!

LESNAK LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield is off into the regional semifinals! Junior Madi Lesnak has been a big reason why. If you are a fan of Springfield girls sports, Madi’s name is one that is hard to miss. She is a staple in every team and program she takes part in. That’s why Tiger fans can never quite get enough of her.

As far as basketball goes, before this season, you would see Lesnak spend a lot more time in the paint than the perimeter. New head coach John Matisi has changed that plan. Madi has converted to point guard. You’re thinking that not too many post players convert to point guard. Normally, you’d be right but Madi’s athleticism and ball handling skills has made it a clear transition. Being a point guard has also made Madi step into the light as a leader on the floor. She has embraced it. Madi has become like a second coach on the court for her team, and it has turned her into one of the premiere point guards in the area.

Madi took the time to talk with Anthony Hartwig about her season, and her journey. She also talks about stepping into a leadership role, gelling with the younger players on the team, and much more.
