CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 7) WITH JOE IGNAZIO

CANFIELD, OH- In the latest episode of YSN’s “Canfield Football Coach’s Corner,” host DJ Yokley sat down with Joe Ignazio, head coach of the Canfield Cardinal football team, to discuss the team’s progress and strategies following a crucial bye week.

“We’ve been bitten a little bit by the injury bug ever since summer,” Ignazio admitted. “The bye week allowed us to get our guys healthy and refocused before diving back into the thick of the season.”

Ignazio shared insights on managing the team’s morale and maintaining their focus. Rather than granting the team an entire week off, the Cardinals engaged in meaningful activities such as community service with Hurricane Relief and local fire and police departments. “It’s a good balance of football, rest, and giving back to the community,” said Ignazio.

When asked about his personal time during the bye week, Ignazio confessed, “I’m always watching football, breaking down film on our opponents,” highlighting the dedication seen not only in his players but in himself as well.

Looking ahead to this Friday’s game against Howland, Ignazio emphasized the importance of staying focused and controlling what they can. “We talk about you versus you and not getting in your own way. We’re committed to not lowering our standards, regardless of external expectations.”

As they prepare for the upcoming match, the Cardinals celebrate the efforts of their JV players through their traditional “Breakfast of Champions” event, fostering camaraderie and a sense of achievement within the squad.

Ignazio also revealed a more personal side in the interview, touching on his past fear of heights and deeper thoughts about life and mortality as they relate to his coaching philosophy. “The older I get, the more I think about life itself… it gives you a real picture of your existence in this world,” he reflected.

The Canfield Cardinal football team is poised and ready, with their eyes set on finishing the season strong and making a significant impact in the playoffs. As Ignazio aptly put it, “October are meaningful games, and you’re certainly right there. You win the next two, and you’re in the playoffs.”

Coach Ignazio’s leadership and the team’s renewed spirit demonstrate that the Cardinals are more than prepared to tackle the challenges ahead and soar to new heights.

CANFIELD FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 6) WITH JOE IGNAZIO

CANFIELD, OH-  On a brisk Wednesday night, nestled in the heart of Cardinal Nation, the Canfield Cardinals football team gathered at Coca’s Pizza to gear up for another week of gridiron action. With the season in full swing, Head Coach Joe Ignazio joined YSN’s Steve Leslie for a detailed discussion on the team’s performance and upcoming bout.

Reflecting on the season thus far, Coach Ignazio highlighted the team’s struggles with finishing drives, an “achilles heel” that has persisted. Despite amassing 426 yards of offense in a recent tough game against Dover, the Cardinals could only muster 14 points. “Our ability to sustain drives has been a struggle this year,” Ignazio lamented. Nevertheless, he praised his team’s relentless effort and improvement week after week, showcasing their commitment to getting better.

Steve Leslie noted the positive impact of young players gaining valuable game-time experience against a formidable schedule. Ignazio agreed, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive environment. “Our coaches are extremely positive with our kids. We always make sure to show the good, the bad, and the ugly on film,” he noted, stressing the value of teachable moments.

As the Cardinals gear up to face a resilient Louisville team, Ignazio acknowledged the challenges ahead. Louisville, sitting at 3-3, mirrors the Cardinals’ ethos by playing quality teams and showcasing tough football. “They’re physical defensively and have some skilled players offensively that keep you on your heels,” Ignazio observed.

With playoffs still within reach, Ignazio remains optimistic. He urged his team, especially the seniors, to hold each other accountable and understand the bigger picture. “The goals are still right in front of your face. It’s a matter of how bad do you want it,” he encouraged.

This Friday night, Canfield will aim to address key areas: limiting big plays, sustaining offensive drives, and tightening up on special teams. Ignazio concluded with a hopeful note, appreciating players like “Lumpy,” who exemplifies unselfishness and resilience.

As Cardinal Nation rallies behind their team, the stage is set for another thrilling encounter. Tune in to YSN for live coverage and cheer on the Canfield Cardinals as they continue their journey, determined to carve a path to success.

SAVVA SAVES THE DAY

POLAND, OH-  In the latest episode of the Poland Bulldog Show, senior defensive tackle Savva DiRienzo provided intriguing insights into his experience playing for the Bulldogs during a pivotal season. Host Matt Romeo sat down with DiRienzo at the Bulldogs Bar and Grill, discussing everything from nerve-wracking packed houses to the calm needed before a game.

DiRienzo, who is in his first varsity football season, shared how the heightened attention this year has been both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, especially during high-stakes games. “Knowing that there’s going to be all these eyes on you, especially this week with the game being on TV, it was very nerve-wracking,” DiRienzo admitted. However, he highlighted that once the whistle blows, the focus is solely on the gridiron.

A rich discussion ensued about October football, where DiRienzo expressed his honor in participating in such meaningful matches. “The games themselves feel like any other varsity game, but the significance hits you,” noted DiRienzo, pointing out that maintaining the same level of play, regardless of external pressures, is crucial.

When asked about his pre-game rituals, DiRienzo shared a surprisingly simple routine: heading home after school and unwinding by playing on his phone. “It’s not much of a ritual, more of a routine, but it really helps calm my nerves,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of this downtime before heading into intense gameplay.

Romeo also touched on DiRienzo’s dual role as a wrestler, drawing parallels between the two sports. DiRienzo elaborated on how wrestling techniques, such as staying low and hand usage, significantly benefit his football skills. “Wrestling has drilled certain movements into me, which translates well on the football field,” he said.

As the conversation shifted to the upcoming game against Niles, DiRienzo expressed confidence and excitement. “We’ve been practicing hard, and I feel we’re going to give them a game for sure. Being able to come back home and do it is definitely very special,” he stated, acknowledging the unique atmosphere of home games.

With the Bulldogs facing a crucial must-win game, all eyes will be on DiRienzo and his teammates this Friday night. Fans can anticipate a riveting match, bolstered by the home crowd’s support.

SLIV DOESN’T SLIDE

POLAND, OH-The latest episode of the YSN Poland Bulldog Show featured star defensive tackle Nate Slivkoff in an engaging interview that shed light on his experiences on and off the field. Hosted by Matt Romeo, the episode delved into Slivkoff’s preparation, mental fortitude, and future ambitions.

Slivkoff, known for his relentless performance on the field, shared insights from last Friday’s game against South Range—a match-up he described as both draining and exhilarating. “Their hurry-up offense was absolutely brutal,” Slivkoff admitted. Despite the challenge, his anticipation for a potential playoff rematch is palpable. “I’d be excited to play against them in the playoffs, hopefully later this year,” he added.

The conversation also explored the unique adrenaline rush that high school football offers. “It’s all about seeing all the people there for your game and watching you play,” Slivkoff said. Reflecting on the ethos of meaningful games in October, the young athlete emphasized the importance of learning from past performances and correcting mistakes for future matchups.

In an intriguing twist, Slivkoff spoke about his pregame rituals, which include a silent car ride followed by a quiet walk to mentally prepare himself. “It’s not as much physical as it is mental,” he explained.

Coach Pav, a notable figure in Slivkoff’s football journey, was also mentioned in the episode. However, Slivkoff revealed that he doesn’t have him as a teacher this year. Interestingly, the senior doesn’t attend Poland High School; he studies software development at the Career Center in Canfield. “Looking forward to finding either work instantly or going straight to college,” Slipkoff said about his post-graduation plans.

As the interview wrapped up, Slivkoff remained focused on the immediate challenge ahead—the game against Niles. “The most important game of the season is the next game of the season,” he asserted, emphasizing the team’s mindset of taking one game at a time.

With such dedication both in sports and academics, Nate Slivkoff proves to be a multifaceted young talent. The Poland Bulldogs can certainly hope for great things from him as they advance through the season.

WESTERN RESERVE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 5) WITH JOHN ARMENI

BERLIN CENTER, OH- In an unprecedented streak, the Western Reserve High School football team is off to a remarkable 5-0 start under the astute leadership of Coach John Armeni, whose disciplined approach and unwavering focus have significantly contributed to the team’s success. The team’s recent victories over McDonald and Lowville, particularly the 41-22 triumph against Lowville—a team that ended their playoff run last season—showcase their robust play and strategic prowess.

Despite the impressive start, Coach Armeni remains grounded and focused on each game, emphasizing continuous improvement and addressing areas of weakness. “We are an unfinished product,” Armeni stated, acknowledging the need for ongoing adjustments and refinements despite their current record. Notably, Armeni highlighted the importance of improving their passing defense, which he identified as a point of concern despite their solid run defense and offensive capabilities.

A hallmark of the team’s success has been their commitment to the run, facilitated by standout performances from key players like Jack Darnay, Dom McCarty, and Chris Pater. The offense’s adaptability was also evident when it showcased its passing proficiency with Alec Abrams making critical catches in consecutive games. On the defensive side, the team has been formidable, with players like Noah Gonzalez stepping up with significant contributions, including interceptions and numerous tackles.

Looking ahead, the team faces formidable opponents in the upcoming weeks, including Campbell, Springfield, and Jackson Milton. Armeni praised Campbell for their athletic and physical prowess, highlighting the need for his team to maintain their intensity and preparation. “You have to fight your way out,” Armeni warned, setting the tone for the grueling matches to come.

The community’s support has been instrumental, with local businesses like Ben’s Restaurant backing the team and hosting weekly “Coach’s Corner” interviews. Chris Colucci, host of the YSN podcast, emphasized the essential role of community support in sustaining the team’s momentum and morale.
As the season reaches its midpoint, Coach Armeni and the Western Reserve team remain steadfast in their mission to play meaningful and high-stakes games, with their eyes set firmly on maintaining and building upon their early victories. “All you can ask for is to play meaningful games,” Armeni reflected, capturing the spirit of competition and the drive to succeed that has characterized this remarkable season so far.
