WRESTLING WEDNESDAYS WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 3) FEATURING KAYDEN WELKER
In a significant achievement for South Range High School, senior wrestler Kayden Welker has secured his place in the 100 Wins Club, a coveted milestone in the world of high school wrestling. Welker clinched his 100th victory at the Beavers Local Hopple Tournament, where he demonstrated the skill and determination that have defined his wrestling career.
In the latest episode of YSN’s “Wrestling Wednesday,” Welker joined hosts Anthony Hartwig, Gary Althiser, and Scotty Mincher to discuss his journey to 100 wins and his future goals. A jubilant Welker expressed his excitement about the milestone, particularly noting the joy of having his father in his corner. “It was very exciting having my dad in the corner. It was pretty awesome to have that achievement now,” Welker said. Reflecting on the accomplishment, Welker emphasized the importance of the mental aspect of wrestling, acknowledging the nerves that often accompany matches and his methods of preparation. “I get really nervous before I wrestle. So once I have music and I start get going, I start to get going, I’m usually pretty good,” he explained.
Welker’s goals for his senior season are ambitious yet attainable, driven by personal aspirations and family legacy. Among his key targets are winning the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League (EOWL), securing sectional and district championships, and ultimately making a mark at the state tournament. With the support of a close-knit team and a strong personal drive, Welker looks forward to his remaining high school matches with specific bouts circled on his calendar, including a redemption match against Trevor Osborne from Southeast, who’s currently ranked third in the state. Welker’s success is also a testament to the strength of the South Range wrestling program, which has evolved significantly over the years under the guidance of Coaches Frank and Dave. From humble beginnings, the program has risen to win a state title during Welker’s freshman year and continues to nurture wrestling talent at all levels.
As Welker progresses, he is considering pursuing wrestling at the collegiate level, with family values and team camaraderie being essential in his decision-making process. The South Range community and wrestling supporters now eagerly anticipate Welker’s continued success in his senior season and future sporting endeavors.
