CANFIELD BOY’S GOLF COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MIKE KERENSKY

CANFIELD, OH-  The recent episode of the YSN Coach’s Corner podcast,” hosted by DJ Yokley, featured a special segment on Canfield’s golf team with their seasoned coach, Mike Kerensky. Recorded live from Coates Pizza, thanks to the support of Steve Coca, the episode delved into the intricacies of high school golf, the challenges of coaching during the post-COVID boom, and the incredible achievements of the Canfield team.

Coach Kerensky, the most tenured coach at Canfield High School, spoke candidly about the new challenges and opportunities that have emerged with the increasing popularity of golf. “It’s actually become harder because so many people started playing golf,” he remarked, giving credit to the exceptional efforts of Brian Tolnar and Stacy Butler of Mill Creek Golf Course for their unwavering support.

Kerensky also highlighted the unique team dynamics and the remarkable talent returning to the squad this season. Despite unexpected changes, the team has adapted and excelled, recently breaking a 30-year-old record with a score of 296. “My senior leadership… they deserve half of my check. The coaching that they do, the morale building, the sense of team… I truly think that’s why we’re playing as well as we have,” he noted, emphasizing the invaluable role of his seniors, Carson Afares and Topher Drumbetta.

The podcast also shed light on the psychological aspects of golfing, which Kerensky believes are crucial. He shared how maintaining emotional stability is as important as physical skill. “You have too much time. If you hit a bad shot, you’re walking up, thinking, ‘I’ve got to make this up,’” he explained, underscoring the importance of mental resilience.

Despite his extensive experience and knowledge, Kerensky attributes much of the team’s success to the collective spirit and mentorship within the group. He fondly referred to the collaborative environment among local golf coaches, recounting instances of mutual support and camaraderie, which have fortified the team’s moral fiber.

The episode wrapped up with Kerensky expressing deep gratitude and admiration for his players, describing them as “good, good young men doing good things.” With talents like sophomores Danny Chaplo and Nathan Miller stepping up, the future indeed looks bright for Canfield golf.

Listeners can tune into the full episode of YSN’s podcast to get more insights into Coach Kerensky’s coaching philosophy, the team’s achievements, and the upcoming golf season.
