THOMPSON TAKES THE LEAD

POLAND, OH – Junior Eliana Thompson isn’t just another name on the Poland girls’ basketball roster—she’s a cornerstone in a proud program known for its family atmosphere and rich history of success. As a multi-sport athlete balancing soccer, basketball, and softball, Thompson is no stranger to the rigors of a packed schedule. Yet, that hasn’t stopped her from emerging as a vital leader for the basketball team. Stepping into her new role as an upperclassman, she has taken on increased responsibilities, becoming a guiding force for her younger teammates.

“It’s been awesome,” Thompson explained. “You always look forward to becoming a captain and an older girl on the team who others can look up to.” Thompson’s journey to leadership was fast-tracked last year when she unexpectedly had to fill in for injured teammate Mary Brandt. The sophomore stepped up, gaining invaluable experience and confidence that has carried over into this season. “It’s definitely helped my confidence. I knew I had to really step up and just do what I can do,” she said.

But it’s not just her on-court performance that makes Thompson special; it’s her ability to maintain the team’s cherished family culture. “It’s really special what we’ve built. We always lean on each other, no matter if it’s basketball or anything outside of it,” she noted. Coach Blanch is one of her biggest supporters, continually urging her to stay confident and reminding her that “shooters shoot.” Thompson credits hard work in practice for her in-game success, embodying a work ethic that extends beyond the court into her academic life, where she excels in subjects like math and history.

Thompson aspires to a future in the medical field, possibly as a physical therapist, though she remains open to playing sports at the collegiate level. “It’s definitely softball above soccer and basketball, but I would give either of them a shot,” she said. Her work ethic, combined with a supportive family, helps her navigate the challenges of a rigorous junior year. As someone who thrives on consistent effort, she draws strength from her family during the days when motivation wanes. “Family is so important. They are always there for me,” she shared. As the season progresses, Thompson remains focused on her goals: leading her team, winning the conference, and putting the team first. With her dedication and the unyielding support of her coaches, family, and friends, Thompson is poised to lead Poland’s girls’ basketball team to new heights. “Just show up and do your best,” she advises, a mantra she lives by every day. And with that mindset, the sky’s the limit for Elliana Thompson and her Poland Bulldogs.
