CARDINALS END EAST’S SEASON

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney opened their tournament run on Wednesday beating East for the third time this season by a score of 41-19.

First Half

The Cardinals got off to a fast start early thanks to two free throws from Katie Hoguh and would add on to that in the first quarter with three pointers from Angelina Rotunno, Alaina Scavina and Gia DiVincenzo.  Meanwhile, the Lady Bears of east would only have a two pointer and a free throw from Samir Colon with the score at the end of the first being 14-3 Mooney.

The second quarter saw little as Mooney pulled away again with Maria Fire getting four points in the quarter.  Hough would once again execute on the free throws, while Gia Diorio made a two point jumper that took a couple of bounces before it finally went through the net.  East would only have three points once again from Colon as going into the half and just couldn’t get past the Mooney man to man and pressure defense.  The score at the half was 29-6.

Second Half

It seemed like at the second half that the Golden Bears found a bit of their mistakes as they started to rattle the Lady Cardinals a bit from one missed shot to the next.  The Bears would get some buckets out of it from Ja’Mia Dent who scored four points in the third along with Colon once again with two made free throws.  Meanwhile Mooney was only held to five points in the third, those being four points in total from Hough and a free throw by Fire.

However, Mooney still had the lead going into the fourth and never looked back as East’s last few points were field goals inside the paint by senior Brianna Thompson as the Cardinals will move on to the Sectional Finals against West Geauga (6-4) who got a big victory last night against the Southeast Pirates (9-5) 54-47 and continue while East finishes the season at five and seven winning 41-19.

MOONEY SWEEPS SEASON SERIES WITH IRISH

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The last time these two teams met just a few weeks ago, it was the lady Cardinals of Cardinal Mooney who came away with Holy War battle number one 46-35.  Now, just a day after National Girls and Women in Sport Day, it was time for round two in the Holy War, senior night edition and the lady Irish were hungry for revenge for what happened last time while not wanting to get swept  two years in a row.  Mooney coming into the game just came off of a 43-39 loss to the Lady Warriors of West Branch while the Irish were on a three game winning streak with a loss to Canfield 51-37 and were without one of their best defenders in Jamie Nelson who is in concussion protocol, with Lily Scott being implemented into the starting five.

First Half

The seniors of Mooney had a good first few minutes in the beginning, especially when senior Cherish Little got into the game and blocked an Alayna Smith put-back layup while receiving a standing ovation from the Mooney family and friends.  Before that, the Cardinals got their first two points thanks to an Administrative Technical Foul.  After that, the Cardinals would go up nine to three early on but got into a little bit of foul trouble which led the Irish to gain some momentum and score a few easy layups and two point jumpers from the Forward Smith, Guard Cara McNally and Senior Forward Anisah Moorman which cut the lead down to two.  Mooney would however go into the second with a seven point lead.

In the second quarter, it was the senior Cardinals leading the pack with a ton of GRIT as seniors Katie Hough and Angelina Rotunno both hit threes, while Gia Diorio and Olivia Rouser off the bench went into the paint scoring a few shots.  Meanwhile, Ursuline had an answer of their own with Anisah Moorman at the guard position knocking down a nothing but net three and at the laf, it was now a four point game 27-23.

Second Half

The second half became a big show between both teams as they shared the lead back and forth, with the Irish early on taking the lead by one while Rachel Fabry getting a nice fast break play in between three cardinal defenders and getting the nice layup as a reward and while Smith and Moorman would do more work inside the paint, Cara McNally hit an important three.  In the end however and with a 35-34 lead in the fourth, Mooney found their rhythm again and there was great full court pressure by players in senior Gia Divincenzo, Hough, Maddie Trimble, and the rest of the crew as after a few more buckets, the Irish were forced to foul with none to give.

Mooney would go into the Bonus shooting one and ones, with the Irish answering back with a layup on their own, but would have to foul again which put Mooney in the double bonus and eventually gave them the win, the Cardinals and coach Jason Baker getting their 10th win of the season, while coach Mike Kernan and the lady Irish fall to under .500 at seven and eight.

Ursuline Stats

For the lady Irish, it was once again the talented forwards playing at the five in Alayna Smith and Anisah Moorman as Smith scored 13 and Moorman put up 12, combining for 25 points, one of those being from behind the arc.  Cara McNally would finish with nine points, hitting a three in the third, Rachel Fabry would finish with five points and Lily Scott rounded up the crew with two.  Meredith Gray would come into the game playing solid defense later on.

Cardinal Mooney Stats

For Mooney, it was once again Katie Hough leading that pack with 19 points.  Angelina Rotunno would score seven on the night, making a three in the second quarter.  Gia Diorio had six points, and Gia Divincenzo had five.  Meanwhile, both Olivia Rouser and Alaina Scavina combined for eight points and Maria Fire finished with two points.  Maddie Trimble had a good defensive performance pressuring a few irish players.

IRISH FAST START DOOMS MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- During last season’s Holy War,  it was a struggle for the Ursuline Irish as they were swept by the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals.  This season it was different, the Irish had a winning streak and Cardinal Mooney has not played in 20 days due to COVID-19 and were looking to get their first win in nearly over a month, while the Irish were looking to bounce back after a disappointing five point loss to Chaney on Tuesday.  It’s the Holy War, round one of the 2020-21 season and there was a lot of GRIT.

The first quarter saw scoring on both teams ends with the Irish extending it to eight, leading 19 to 8 after the first quarter.  In the second, it was the Irish once again up by eight going into halftime, but the Cardinals who have not been in a game time situation in nearly a month.  Even with star player Michae Pelini out due to injury, they were still in range to continue their winning streak against Ursuline.  In the end however, they would not catch up to the Irish as Ursuline extended their season with ten wins, while Mooney with being off for 20 days, lost their third game of the season 61-44.

Second half

The second half is where things took a turn as the Irish struggled on the defensive side with Mooney taking the advantage thanks to players in Gia DiVincenzo, Hough and Alaina Scavina.  Ursuline also struggled with injuries and their star guard Rachel Fabry and Scott had lower body injuries, but would still continue to play through all the way.  In the end, it was Coach Jason Baker getting his ninth win of the season against Mike Kernan and the Lady Irish 45-36 as Mooney continued their winning streak against Ursuline.

COWBOYS CORRAL MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH-  People usually talk about college football when it comes to Saturday, but one thing they forgot was Saturday night high school football between two Steel Valley Conference rivals in the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals and the Chaney Cowboys.  Mooney got their first win last week against East, meanwhile, Chaney was close but could not finish.  On Saturday, both teams were looking to win and gain some momentum for the later half of the season.

Most of the first half saw both teams struggle to move the ball as both defenses were really good.  That was until near the end of the half, where Jamie Melton channeled his Ezekiel Elliott, going 73-yards to the house making it 7-0 Cowboys.  There was then another error for Mooney a few possessions later as Brian Phillibin was backed in his own endzone.  The snap went over his head leading to a safety and making it 9-0 Cowboys at the half.

The same happened later in the third, but instead of the safety, Phillibins punt would be blocked, which was then returned by Jason Hewlett for a touchdown making it 16-0.  Chaney would score two more times as the Mooney defense just had no answer in the second half thanks to a Delshawn Petrosky 48-yard pass to Bryant Douglas and a Darius Humbert five-yard run as Chaney rolled over Mooney 30-0.

Petrosky finished 13 of 24 yards passing with 193 yards and a touchdown.  He also had 10 carries for 88 yards.  Chaney had a total of 408 yards while Mooney finished with 123 yards.

Chaney (1-3) will head to Canfield stadium as they look to upset the undefeated Canfield Cardinals (4-0) while Cardinal Mooney (1-3) will head to Boardman to face the Boardman Spartans (2-2).
