THE EYES OF AN EAGLE

HUBBARD, OH-  In the latest episode of YSN’s podcast, hosts Anthony Hartwig and DJ Yokley sat down with Johnny Reyes, a senior standout of the Hubbard Eagles baseball team. Known affectionately as “Johnny Baseball,” Reyes is gearing up for his final high school season before taking his talents to the collegiate level.

Reyes, who is preparing to graduate soon, reflected on how quickly time has passed. “I only have 21 days left of school when I’m out of here,” he shared, revealing a mix of excitement and nostalgia as he counts down the final days.

Despite the challenges posed by unpredictable weather this baseball season, Reyes remains focused. He takes advantage of rainy days by honing his skills in practice, staying mentally and physically prepared for when the team finally hits the field.

Reyes attributes much of his success to relentless practice and a strong support system, including his parents and a dedicated travel coach. Their guidance has been pivotal in securing his commitment to play baseball at Grove City, where he plans to study nursing.

The hosts noted Johnny’s competitive spirit, especially evident when faced with formidable pitchers like teammates Braden Songer and Gabe Rusnak. Reyes’s tenacity is further highlighted by his determination to earn his spot on the field in college, as he prepares to leave behind the comforts of home, particularly his mom’s cooking, for this new chapter.

With his eyes set on the future and a drive to succeed, Johnny Reyes embodies the qualities of a true team player ready to soar to new heights. As the podcast wrapped up, both hosts expressed their eagerness to watch what this promising talent will accomplish in his final high school games and beyond.

STOUFFER IS ALWAYS FRESH

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield  senior Hannah Stouffer is in the spotlight on the latest YSN Player Profile.  As she prepares to wrap up her high school journey, Stouffer opened up about the bittersweet emotions of her final year playing softball, a sport she’s been dedicated to for years.

Reflecting on these past four years, Hannah admits a whirlwind of emotions, balancing between excitement for the future and nostalgia for the memories made on the field. “I’m ready for it to be over, but at the same time, looking back…I’m just going to miss it,” she shared. Drawing from her experience in both softball and soccer, Stouffer talks about her transition into a leadership role. Alongside fellow seniors Olivia Allen and Sarah, she strives to set a positive example for younger teammates, emphasizing the influence of attitude and readiness on team dynamics.

Off the field, Hannah is a high-achieving student with a 3.97 GPA and plans to pursue nursing at Youngstown State University, inspired by her mother’s career in the medical field. Balancing academics with athletics has been no small feat, yet one she’s most proud of. Stouffer also disclosed her love for reading and true crime documentaries—a pastime that offers her a mental break from her busy schedule. The kind of balance one needs while aiming for her simple yet ambitious goal this softball season: “Win games.” As Hannah gears up to take on new challenges post-graduation, she’s deeply grateful for the unwavering support of her family, coaches, and friends. Her reflections on high school life underscore the impact of community in cultivating growth and accomplishment.

FOR GOODNESS’ HAKE

YSU Senior Relief Pitcher, Joel Hake is as “Youngstown” as it gets on the diamond.  He’s a scrappy slinger that graduated from Ursuline after helping his team to four district titles in his high school days, and as of late, Hake is one of the top relievers in Dan Bertolini’s bullpen.  In his career at YSU, he’s tallied just over 120 innings and in those frames, he’s struck out 81 and only walked 36 tallying five saves along the way.

This year has been especially tough for Joel as he’s started out rehabbing a lingering injury after pitching just one inning keeping him grounded through the most part of the first two series of the season.

When Hake receives the green light to come back…look out.  Although Joel majors in nursing, he has no second thoughts about tearing through the competition in 2019.  This year, Joel intends to add to the outstanding numbers he generated last year as well as to his legacy at the Penguin Closer.

Our Steve Leslie (and Joel’s former Manager) sat down with Hake in Tallahassee just before the FSU series to discuss past, present, and future for #3 in your programs for this week’s YSU Penguin Baseball Player Profile: FOR GOODNESS’ HAKE.
