RAIDERS UPSET GARFIELD TO ADVANCE

GARRETTSVILLE OH- South Range has to go on the road in Friday night’s sectional final. But the trip to Garrettsville to take on the G-Men didn’t phase the Raiders as they came out on top 53-46.

Brandon Mikos led a Balanced Raiders offense that saw six players score at least 6 points. Mikos was the only one in double figures with 11. Mike Perry and Nate Brown both finished with 8 points.

The Raiders advance to the district semifinals on Tuesday night. They will travel to fifth seeded Pymatuning Valley. Tip off is set for 7:00.

WEST BRANCH MAKES THEIR FIRST TRIP TO DISTRICTS SINCE 2008

BELOIT OH- It was a special night in West Branch on Friday as the Warriors won their first sectional title since 2008. To make the victory even sweeter, it came against EBC rival Marlington. The Warriors took care of the Dukes 58-50.

Dru DeShields led the way for the Warriors scoring 20 points. JD Brain has a strong performance putting in 12 points. Josh Gregory was also in double figures with 10 points.

West Branch advances to their first district semifinal in 13 seasons as they will travel to Chaney on Thursday. Tip off is set for 7:00.

MOONEY RUNS AWAY FROM RAMS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney had little trouble on Friday night in their sectional championship game against Mineral Ridge. They led from the tip, and never looked back. Mooney’s biggest quarter was the second when they put up 18 points in the frame. The Cardinals rolled 62-41.

Michael Pelini gave the Rams problems all night long scoring 26 points to lead the team. Thomas Fire put together a strong night as well putting up 13. Mick Hergenrother was also in double figures for Mooney with 11.

Triston Weiss led the Rams with 10 points, and Jake Sylak joined him with team lead also contributing 10 points. Jalen Eiland finished with 9.

Mooney advances to the district semifinals on Tuesday. The Cardinals will host LaBrae. Tip off is set for 7:00.

LUCENTE LIFTS LOWELLVILLE TO DISTRICTS

LOWELLVILLE OH- It was a double double night for Rockets sophomore Anthony Lucente that gave Lowellville all they needed to beat Brookfield 58-37. Brookfield led early 8-2 but once the Rockets regained the lead late in the first frame, they never trailed again.

Lucente put up 25 points and 11 rebounds to secure yet another double double on the season. The sophomore is averaging a double double on the season. Cole Bunofsky was also in double figures with 15 points.

Brookfield was led by Donavan Pawlowski who scored 14 points for the Warriors. Isaiah Jones had a strong night as well putting in 12 points, including a thunderous dunk.

Lowellville advances to the district semifinal where they’ll travel to Bristol on Tuesday at 7:00.

 

MCDONALD KEEPS MOVING ON

MCDONALD OH- The McDonald Blue Devils went on a 25-7 3rd quarter run and pulled away from the visiting Springfield Tigers winning 69-42 in a Division IV district semi-finals match-up.

The Blue Devils  Molly Howard went off for a game-high 22 points and teammates Sophia Constantino dropping in 13 points and Brooke Lewis added 11 points.

The Tigers also held high scoring honors with Jacey Mullem  nailing down 22 points. McDonald will host the Newton Falls Tigers  at 4 o’clock Saturday in a district finals match-up.

POLAND SNATCHES VICTORY OOUT FROM UNDER WOLVERINES

POLAND OH- Everyone knee the district semifinal between West Geauga and Poland was going to be a close game. The eleventh seeded Wolverines went 22-4 a season ago, and were a regional team. They returned most of their roster, and the only reason the were seeded so low was the fact they hadn’t played many games at the time of voting. Poland was able to pull out a dramatic overtime win 78-67.

The Bulldogs came out swinging staring the game on a 9-0 run. The Bulldogs first five shots from the field were three pointers. Poland jumped out a 35-19 lead as the second half ticked away. The Wolverines put together a 10-0 run between the 2nd and 3rd quarters to get back in it though and cut the Poland lead to 35-29.

Throughout the rest of the game, every time Poland would appear to sneak away, West Geauga would find a big shot to keep the Bulldogs in striking distance. This paid off for them as in the fourth quarter they finally got their first lead of the game going up 62-61.

After a pair of free throws, the Wolverines made it 64-61. Poland then turned the ball over back to West Geauga and with 6.7 seconds to go in the game the Wolverines were in bounding the ball in front of their own bench. Mary Brant put on a cape for her team as she poked away the inbound pass, gathered it, and got a three up just in time to beat the buzzer. The shot went in and Poland snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Poland took that momentum into overtime and outscored West Geauga 14-3 in the extra frame. They would win 78-67.

Polsnd advances to their third straight district championship where they’ll host Marlington on Saturday at 7:00.

SALEM SHINES IN WIN OVER KENSTON

The Salem Lady Quakers are moving on to the Division II district finals game after taking care of business at home beating the Kenston Bombers 45-36 in Wednesday night‘s hoops action. Salem stepped up their defensive effort holding Kenston to just 3 points in the 3rd quarter while the Quakers put up 12 points. The Quakers held a huge advantage on the boards, out rebounding the Bombers 38-16.

Abby Perry led a well balanced scoring attract for the Lady Quakers scoring 12 points. Abbie Davidson and Kyla Jamison each put up 9 points. The victory improved  Salem to 15-5. The Quakers will be on the road  to take on the Lake County Perry in a Division II district final match up on Saturday evening.

RANGE RATTLES SPARTANS TO ADVANCE

CANFIELD OH- South Range opened their tournament run on Tuesday night host the 23rd seeded Conneaut Spartans in the first round. The Raiders has control of the game from the tip as their defense forced many turnovers by the Spartans. The Raiders rolled through the first round with a 59-24 victory.

Brandon Mikos led the charge for the Raiders scoring 14 points. Eli Taylor was also in double figures for the Raiders with 10 points. Mike Patrone contributed 9 points for the Raiders.

The Raiders move on to travel to Garfield on Friday at 7:00 in the sectional final.

TIGERS TAKE A BITE OUT OF BULLDOGS

Joey Kline had a big night for the Tigers as Newton Falls opened the 1st  round of  Division III tournament action with a 63-21 win over the visiting East Palestine Bulldogs.

Newton Falls held the Bulldogs scoreless in the 1st quarter 13-0 and held a 41-6 halftime advantage.

Kline scored 19 points and pulled down 10 boards for the Tigers. Foe East Palestine Dom Wycott scored 11 points for his team.

On tab next for the Tigers is a friday night  home game against the Liberty Leopards in a sectional finals contest.

VALLEY SOARS TO NEXT ROUND

The Valley Christian Eagles dropped in 11 shots from beyond the arc on their way to a 71-28 win over the visiting Maplewood Rockets in the opening round of the division IV play.

The Eagles took a 35-7 lead into the half and put the contest out of reach in the 2nd half. Nine Eagles reached the scoring column with Sekou Stanley nailing down 18 points.

Next on slate is a Friday night home contest in a sectional finals game with the Windham Bombers.
