REBELS UNWRAP A VICTORY OVER SPRINGFIELD

COLUMBIANA, OH- Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit quite like a dominating win. Crestview enjoyed a 63-36 win over Springfield on Monday night.

Crestview shot the lights out of the gym as the whole team shot well from three. The Rebels had five different players hit a three-pointer. They shot 50% from beyond the arc (7/14). The Tigers had no answer for the strong shooting performance. With Tanner Hoffer in foul trouble early, Krista Perry has a dominant first half with 19 points at the break. The Rebel defense came close to holding the Tigers to their lowest total of the season as Springfield tacked on a couple of buckets late to avoid that stat.

Krista Perry led the Rebels with career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Shianna Mathis and Tanner Hoffer both finished in double figures with 10.

The Rebels return to action Saturday as they travel to Lowellville.

POLANDS INCREDIBLE STREAK ENDS IN WARREN

Coming in to the day the Poland Lady Bulldogs has not won 31 straight regular season games. They had not lost a game in the regular season since January 27th, 2018 at Struthers. Warren Harding brought it all to an end beating the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon 48-39.

The Raiders set the tone early as they scored the first 9 points of the game putting Poland in an early hole. The Bulldogs did a good job to stable themselves after that, not letting the lead balloon, but they couldn’t find a way to chip in to the Raider lead in the first half. Poland was getting some quality looks but just couldn’t knock them down. Missing one of their best rebounders in Lizzy Herdman due to an illness, the Bulldogs struggled to get second chance opportunities. They went into the locker room trailing 30-18.

At the break Poland made some defensive adjustments and they worked marvelously. The Raiders could not get any solid looks from the floor as the Dogs slowly but surely ate away at the deficit as the second half went on. Jackie Grisdale and Brooke Bonney both hit some timely shots from the perimeter to storm Poland back. The Bulldogs got the game to 41-39 late in the fourth quarter. The Dogs had the ball in their hands but just couldn’t find a timely shot. The Raiders defense locked down the final two minutes of the game, and they hit seven free throws to solidify their 48-39 victory.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldogs in scoring with 12 points. Brooke Bobbey was also in double figures with 10.

Poland returns to action after a week off next Saturday as they host Canfield.

RAIDERS SNAP DRAGONS WIN STREAK

CANFIELD, OH- The Niles Lady Red Dragons came into the game on Thursday night vs South Range tolling. They were coming off a tight 50-48 win over Girard their last time out. The Raiders put a quick end to the Dragons fire with a 54-28 win.

After allowing just 27 points the night before against Boardman, the Raiders defense looked just as sharp Thursday against Niles. The Raiders forced turnovers all night allowing them to stretch their lead as the game went on. The Dragons got a little momentum heading into halftime with a 10-6 run to trail by just 12. 28-16. The Raiders did not slow down in the second half though and outscored the Dragons 15-5 in the third period. That cushion was all the Raider defense needed to lock the game down. Nae Fry did have a very strong night for the Dragons with 22 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Raiders.

Izzy Lamparty led the Raiders with 15 points 7 rebounds. Gabby Lamparty had a strong 12 point 6 assist performance. Lexi Giles was also in double figures with 10.

Nae Fry led the Dragons with 22 points 6 rebounds.

The Poland Lady Bulldogs kept on rolling Thursday night with a 42-24 victory over Jefferson.

Poland started in a hole trailing Jefferson 16-11 after one quarter, but their defense locked down after that only allowing eight points the rest of the game. That helped them cruise to a 42-24 win in Jefferson.

RAIDER DEFENSE HUGE IN WIN OVER SPARTANS

CANFIELD OH- South Range forced 33 Spartan turnovers on route to a 38-27 victory over Boardman.

On a night where defense ran supreme both teams struggled to find any kind of offensive flow. After a pretty exciting first quarter where the Spartans held a 13-11 lead, only eight points combined were squared in the second frame. The Raiders took a two point lead into the locker room 17-15.

In a game where scoring was scarce, it turned out to be the timing of scores that came up big. With the Raiders having a 22-19 lead in the third quarter, senior Emily Irons knocked down two three pointers in a span of one minute to put the Raiders up 9.

That was all the separation the Raider defense needed as they only allowed 12 points in the second half. Not a game that will go on anyone’s offensive highlight reel, but a gritty win for the Raiders 38-27.

Gabby Lamparty led the offense for South Range with 9 points.

Katie Stamp led the Spartans with 9 points.

The Raiders get right back at it Thursday night as they host Niles.

RAIDERS GET LAST LAUGH IN BACK AND FORTH AFFAIR

CANFIELD OH- The South Range Raiders returned home on Monday night to host Struthers. In a game full of runs, the Raiders has the final say in a decisive 54-35 win over the Wildcats.

The Raiders started fast. Izzy Lamparty scores the first 7 points of the game and got the Raiders out front. The score was 13-3 when Struthers finally found their rhythm. They went on a 7-0 run themselves to get within 3. With the score now 13-10 the Raiders pushed back. They pushed ahead 19-10 towards the halfway point of the 2nd frame. The Wildcats would not be denied though and eventually tied the game up 22-22. A late bucket would give the Raiders a 24-22 edge at the break.

Out the half the Raiders once again but together a stretch that made it seem like they were going to grab control of the game. But once again the Wildcats faught and clawed to stay within striking distance. They trailed by just three after the third quarter 34-31.

In what coach Jeff Fishel describes as “the best quarter we’ve played all year” the Raiders finally took control of the game in the final frame. They outscored the Wildcats 20-4 in the quarter to make what was a close game all night end in a lopsided fashion 54-35.

The Raiders were led on offense by Izzy Lamparty who recorded a double-double with 24 points 13 rebounds. Lexi Giles was also in double figures with 14 points. Gabby Lamparty finished with 10.

Emma Elia led Struthers with 14 points.

RAIDERS FIGHT OFF IRISH ON THE ROAD

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Izzy Lamparty has a huge day as the South Range girls’ basketball team got a 50-39 win over Ursuline.

The Raiders jumped ahead early with their strongest offensive quarter of the day scoring 17 in the first frame and leading 17-8 after one. After the first, the Irish kept the game within striking distance. They outscored the Raiders 15-11 in the second quarter and trailed at half 28-23. The Raiders did just enough to keep a decent lead throughout the third quarter. They led 37-31 after three. The Irish had a very strong fourth quarter racking up 16 points and keeping things interesting. But the Raiders made enough plays to keep the Irish away and win 50-39.

Izzy Lamparty was key to the Raiders strong start. She finished with 26 points, 19 of those coming in the first half. Lexi Giles was also in double figures with 10.

Anisah Moorman led the Irish with 14 points.

POLAND UNITED IN WIN OVER BOARDMAN

POLAND OH- The Poland Lady Bulldogs hosted the United Way Classic Saturday and won their matchup on the day over Boardman 56-33.

The Bulldogs defense kept on their dominating as they held the Spartans to just 9 points in the first half. Boardman tried and tried to get open looks but it seemed every outside shot was highly contested. The Spartans did not shoot well from behind the arc. The Bulldogs complimented their strong defense with maybe their best offensive output of the season. They were up 30-9 at the break and their offense was starting to stay away from unforced turnovers. Connie Cougras was a big reason they had such offensive balance. She went 2 for 4 from three and gave the Bulldogs a great lift off the bench. The game was pretty much decided at the half. Coach Blanch used an opportunity to get younger kids into a big atmosphere. Almost everyone that got in the game was able to get on the scoreboard. And those that didn’t still get their name in the stat book with rebounds or assists. An entire team effort helped Poland cruise to a 56-33 win.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldogs with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Kailyn Brown was also in double figures with 12 points 8 rebounds. Connie Cougras finished with 9.

Poland returns to action Thursday as they travel to Jefferson.

RAIDERS ROLL IN HOME OPENER

CANFIELD, OH- It took a couple weeks, but the Lady Raiders finally got to play in their home gym Thursday night hosting Hubbard. The Raiders dominated and won 55-30.

The Eagles has a bright first quarter to start the game as they weathered an early 14-2 Raider lead, and closed the gram on a 7-2 run. A 16-9 deficit seemed like a win for a team that had struggled so much to start their season. Unfortunately for the Eagles, their struggles found them in the second quarter. The Raiders outscored Hubbard 31-5 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to take a commanding lead. The Eagles had an impressive 4th quarter scoring 16 points. But it wasn’t enough to catch the Raiders as they rolled in their home opener 55-30.

Izzy Lamparty led the way for the Raiders with 16 points 8 rebounds. Gabby Lamparty also has a strong night with 8 points and 6 assists.

Toshe Stone led the Eagles with 11 points.

LEOPARDS POUNCE ON REBELS

COLUMBIANA OH- On Wednesday night a clash between two AAC Blue contenders took place at Crestview high school. Liberty came away with this one 64-46.

This was a matchup of two teams that like to play opposite styles. Liberty likes to play fast and score often. Crestview likes to slow down and be deliberate in the half-court.

The first quarter was back and forth, as Crestview looked to make a statement early with some quick shots. Proving they could play fast as well. Unfortunately for them, they could never get the game to slow down to their pace. Liberty gradually extended their lead as the quarters went on. One of the big keys for Liberty was their three-point shooting. The Leopards hit seven threes on the night. They were also able to force plenty of live-ball turnovers that gave them easy fast-break opportunities.

When Crestview has success it was down low. Krista Perry earned every point she had as she was fighting a great rebounding Leopard squad. The Rebels got quite a few good looks from three throughout the night, but just couldn’t get them to fall at a good enough pace.

Crestview made one last surge as the fourth quarter opened. They cut the lead under single digits to nine. But then the Leopards’ ability to score a lot of points quickly showed itself as they rattled off eight points in about a minute and a half. The Leopards speed proved to be too much for Crestview as they ran away with the win tonight 64-46.

Krista Perry has a strong 18 point performance for the Rebels. She added 7 rebounds. Tanner Hoffer grabbed a double-double with 13 points 11 rebounds

The Rebels return to action Saturday as they travel to Champion.
