COLUMBIANA BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH TODD JOHNSON (EP 1)

The Clippers are back and are led by Third-year Skipper Todd Johnson.  Coach has lost his leading scorer in Jared Wilson to graduation, but it’s the depth of the bench and a couple 3rd-year starters in leadership positions is something that Coach J is looking to pay off this year.

YSN’s Mark Franken sits down with Coach to discuss the year ahead, and what the expectations are for the Red and White.

Are the Clips the front-runners for the EOAC?  Can they knock-off the returning champs in Toronto?

All that and more in the year’s first edition of Coach’s Corner with Todd Johnson!

GOING THE ESKRA MILE

A traditionally sound program in the past continues to shine under the watch of the lone Lady Rebel Basketball senior, Haley Eskra.  Eskra is a multi-sport talent that wages war on her opposition in each of the three academic seasons for Crestview.  In Fall, she shines as the setter for Coach Auer, in Winter she’s a guard, and Spring she trades her sneakers for cleats and controls the middle-infield for the Rebs.  While basketball may not be her number one sport by choice, she certainly doesn’t let that show on the hardwood.  Eskra’s game is only trumped by her leadership, and a great dynamic for the players to look to for advice and wisdom throughout the season.

YSN’s own DJ Yokley caught up with Haley prior to the Beaver Local game and broke down her thoughts on and off the court and what she’s looking to accomplish in her grand finale in the black and gold.

LISBON BLUE ANGELS

LISBON, OH- It gives me no greater pride and joy to return back to my alma mater the home of the blue and the white, Lisbon David Anderson High school. This is my final Christmas as a DAHS parents, we’ve been blessed with the legacy of students and student-athletes not because they have a ball in their hand or because the rushed or outscored their opponents but because they are kind, generous, and humble.

A week ago, Tuesday two senior students, Miranda Wood, and Hailey Toot, knew of a fellow senior student that wasn’t expecting much for Christmas. In a simple Social media post,” we need help” these two young ladies rallied an entire student body, Lisbon staff, and community to raise enough funds in just a few short hours to purchase the Christmas gift that he had longed and hoped for. The funds came in so quickly to not only buy the gift he so chooses, but they also raised enough money to purchase him other items that he needed for his home. Lisbon students and their community stuck beside one another and gave an amazing Christmas to one young man to make his Christmas outlook what is now,  “Merry and Bright”.

Haley Toot is a Varsity Cheerleader, the daughter of Dave and Heather Toot, Miranda Wood, faithful student supporter, is the daughter of Melinda Reynolds and Jason Wood.
Lisbon Student Council also rallied their troops and purchased gifts for 8 students in their prospective classes under their advisor Mrs. Carrie Smith. The Junior High Student Senate sponsored 4 of their fellow students.

As a fellow DaHS parent, this delights my heart to know there is so much goodness flowing In the hallways of Lisbon DAHS.
Happy Holidays!

THE RIFFLE EFFECT

According to John Maxwell, leadership is influence and influence is leadership.

The argument will always remain whether leaders are born or made, and here in the Valley-things are no different.  In Crestview, the changing of the guard came last year with a new coaching staff, new strategies, and new players.

The Rebels faced adversity and fought through it, but some did not make it through the campaign.

One of those was Jude Riffle.  Riffle left the team for personal reasons, and in the time between last season and the current, chose to lead by example.  Jude was able to past where it belongs, overcome judgment, and begin righting the ship from the front.

The lone senior this year, he agreed to change positions to help the team where he could most.  Not only did Jude come back to the basketball team, but he came back to lead them.  Jude was elected by his teammates and coaches to be Captain.

They say that a ripple effect is a situation in which, like ripples expanding across the water when an object is dropped into it, an effect from an initial state can be followed outwards incrementally.

Jude Riffle has created a ripple effect in Crestview, and one that all levels of the program will learn and succeed from.  YSN’s DJ Yokley sat down with the Rebel Captain for this week’s Crestview Profile: THE RIFFLE EFFECT.

EAST PALESTINE COACH’S CORNER WITH WILL FRANKLIN (EP 2)

Another game, another victory.  That’s the feeling for the EP Girls Hoops program right now.  Coach Franklin and his staff have the girls primed, and locked in on their game, no matter who is sitting on the opposing bench.

However, a couple decent marginal wins for the Lady ‘Dogs as of late, and they haven’t even scratched the surface on their potential this year.

YSN’s DJ Yokley sits in with Coach Will Franklin following the Bulldogs win over Leetonia, and digs into what more is ahead for Bulldog Nation!

Also, find out Coaches favorite song during the Christmas Season.

SLA’ BELLS ARE RINGING

Sleigh Bells always have you getting into the Christmas spirit, don’t they?

That mood is 24/7 for South Range Senior, Marlaina Slabach.  Her cheer is not limited to just one season, but year-round.  The multi-sport star provides good tidings for her teammates and coaches throughout the year in soccer, basketball and caps it off with softball.

The only person more cheery this time of year than Ol’ Saint Nick, is aptly nicknamed “Sleigh Bells” and YSN’s Anthony Hartwig had the pleasure of sitting down with Marlaina for this week’s South Range Player Profile: SLA’ BELLS ARE RINGING

There’s a new lead dog in Bulldog Country this year.  East Palestine hired on Bill Stanton to help revive the winning tradition in East Palestine for basketball.  Stanton has come from other storied programs such as Boardman, Poland, Struthers, and EOAC Rival- Lisbon.

Now with the reigns on one of the most up and coming programs in the region, Stanton looks to secure a foundation of winning this year that will pay dividends for seasons to come.

BRI FOR THREE

In South Range, there’s a school-record board as you pass by the gymnasium.  It has some of the most legendary student-athletes of the school’s fifty-year history represented.  Somewhere on that boar,d you’ll find a junior sniper on the girl’s basketball team that last year broke the number of three-pointers in a game, as well as the number of three’s drained in a single season, and this year…well, Bri Modic is on pace to break the all-time mark for three-pointers in a career while in the Burgundy and Gold.

This year is much different for the Lady Raiders, new leaders, another year older, another year wiser.  However, for Modic, the goal remains the same.  Get on the court.  Get open.  Get buckets.

YSN’s Anthony Hartwig sits down with Bri Modic for our first South Range Player Profile of the season- BRI FOR THREE.
