POTTERS GET PAST DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER

STEUBENVILLE OH- East Liverpool needed every ounce of energy to top Carrollton in double overtime 53-51.

Nick Woodward player the hero as he put back a missed free throw at the buzzer to end the game. Woodward has missed a shot earlier in the game at the buzzer that would have ended, he made sure his second chance was true. The Potters has to play both overtime’s without their leading scorer Tresean Jackson. He hit a three late in the fourth to give East Liverpool their first lead of the second half 43-42. Jackson fouled out before the end of regulation. The Potters navigated adversity, and earned a trip to the district championship game on Saturday.

Tresean Jackson led the Potters with 17 points. Timmy Neal had a strong night gathering up 14. Jimmy Birong also got in to double figures with 12.

COWBOYS BALANCED OFFENSE DESTROYS CANFIELD

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The Chaney Cowboys came in to Wednesday’s district semifinal with something to prove. They took care of fifth seeded Canfield with focus and balance in a 69-35 win.

It was a Cowboy dominated game from the tip. Chaney led 28-15 at the half, and was clearly the better team on this night. But just to add an explanation to that statement, William Brown threw down a pair of monster dunks in the third quarter to really swing the momentum scale all the way to the Cowboys. They used that to outscore Canfield 40-21 in the second half.

Chaney was led by Travis Easterly and Clive Wilson both with 12 points. Quincy Jones was also in double figures with 11. Brown finished with 10.

Chaney moves on to face the winner of Thursday’s Struthers vs Ursuline game in the district championship on Saturday at Boardman High School. Start time is set for 4:00.

RAIDERS TAKE THE NEXT STEP

CUYAHOGA FALLS OH- The South Range Girls Basketball program made their fourth trip to the Cuyahoga Falls regional in seven seasons. The program was never able to win a game in the Tigers gym. The key to building a great program though is to keep going back to the atmosphere and eventually taking that next step. Wednesday night the Raiders took that step. They dominated the second half in route to a 47-25 win over Champion,

The Raiders could not have asked for a better start. They forced three straight turnovers that led to 6 points. This spurt really set the tone for the whole night. Champion was no slouch on defense either though. They forced the Raiders into a ton of turnovers. The Raiders led 13-9 after a turnover riddled frame from both teams. The story stayed the same throughout the second quarter. Both teams played solid defense and forced the other into uncharacteristic mistakes. The Raiders were only able to score eight points in the second quarter, but it was enough to maintain a five point lead at the break 21-16.

The third quarter is when the separation began for the Raiders. They kept holding the Flashes, and their offense made adjustments to get more points up. The Raiders outscored Champion 17-7 in the third to go up 38-23. Then in the fourth, the Raider defense was smothering, allowing just two points the whole frame. Defense definitely wrote the story for the Raiders impressive win. They only allowed nine total second half points. They also stayed away from foul trouble. They didn’t put Champion in the bonus in either half.

This is the first South Range basketball team boys or girls to go to the regional championship.

Izzy Lamparty led the Raiders with 20 points. Lexi Giles has a strong night as well finishing with 13.

South Range advances to play Elyria Catholic in the Regional Championship on Saturday at 1:00 at Cuyahoga Falls High School.

TIGERS TOO MUCH FOR COLUMBIANA

The Tigers slammed the door shut on any comeback hopes in the second half. Drew Clark led them with a game-High 20.

Sean Whitehead led the Clippers with 10 points. Columbiana ends their season at a mark of 19-5.

VIKINGS PUT RAIDERS SEASON IN HOT WATER

SALEM, OH- The South Range Boys were looking to get revenge on Waterloo after a first toughloss early on in the season. Waterloo had other ideas and defeated the Raiders, 64-46.

Waterloo started off quickly taking an 8-1 lead early in the first and progressively poured it on throughout the game. South Range could hardly get any momentum due to the struggle of missing shots and foul trouble. Kyle Shockley was a dominant presence for Waterloo on both sides of the ball causing havoc for the Raiders. South Range got the game to a 12 point differential at the end of the 3rd to try to spark a comeback in the 4th quarter, but were unfortunately unsuccessful.Kris Scandy led the Raiders with 12 points including a pair of 3’s. Eli Taylor added 9 points off 2 3’s for the Raiders. Also, Jake Gehring and Chris Brooks contributed 8 points a piece for South Range. For Waterloo, Shockley was the top scorer on the night with 31 points, 9 which came from 3 pointers. Also, Caleb Francis put up 20 points to help push the Vikings to a victory.

RAIDERS BACK ON TOP IN DISTRICTS

STRUTHERS OH- South Range came in to Saturday’s district championship with two dominant tournament wins under their belt. The same theme rang true for the Raiders as they controlled Crestview 48-32 for their fourth district championship in the last 7 seasons.

The first quarter was competitive as the Rebels worked hard on defense to keep the Raiders in check. Stopping Izzy Lamparty was a must for them, and in the first quarter she only hit a single bucket from the floor. Addison Bandy knocked down a three and scored 5 points in the first frame as the Rebels only trailed 13-9.

It was only a matter of time though before the Raiders offense found open looks against the Rebel zone. In the second quarter the dam broke and Lexi Giles was a big reason. Giles knocked down three triples in the second quarter and Gabby Lamparty knocked down another two. The Raiders exploded out to a 34-14 halftime lead.

Down twenty at the break was a tough task for the Rebels. They fought hard all throughout the second half to at least stop the bleeding. Krista Perry finally got going in the fourth scoring 5 of her 6 total points. The Raiders were just too much to come back from as they rolled in this one 48-32.

Lexi Giles led the Raiders with 16 points while Gabby Lamparty had a strong day with 12. Izzy Lamparty found herself still in double figures with 10.

Tanner Hoffer led the Rebels with 13, 6 of which came in the final frame.

South Range advances to the regional semifinals on Wednesday night at Cuyahoga Falls High School. Start time is set for 6:15.

WARRIORS ESCAPE TO END POLAND’S SEASON

AUSTINTOWN OH- Saturday’s district championship game definitely lived up to the hype. Poland stormed back from an eight point fourth quarter deficit but just missed victory. West Branch took it 44-43.

The Warriors, who struggled to score in last year’s district matchup with Poland found good shots early and often, and they hit them. Their only points in the first quarter were made threes. On the other end, Kailyn Brown paced the Bulldogs in the first quarter scoring all 9 of Poland’s points. She would go on to score 13 of the Bulldog’s 16 first half points. Trailing 22-13 Jackie Grisdale got a three near the buzzer of the half to make it a 22-16 deficit at half.

That shot is all Grisdale needed to get going. In the third quarter while West Branch kept shooting well from deep, Grisdale seemed to match every bucket they made. She did a great job making sure Poland just stuck around to make a run. After three Poland felt good just being down 36-29.

The fourth quarter was gut check time for the Bulldogs. The found themselves down 41-33 with 4:00 minutes left it didn’t look too promising. Grisdale buried a three to make it 41-36. She then got fouled shooting her next three and made all shots from the line to make it 41-39. After a West Branch bucket, Poland came right back down and scored. Then Grisdale found some space underneath and tied the game up with a layup with 1:08 to go. Both teams traded an empty possession and Poland ended up with the ball with and 9.1 seconds left. West Branch made a great play to jump in front of the inbound pass that led to a fast break. Poland fouled the shooter, who hit 1 out of 2 free throws. On the insuring possession West Branch fouled Grisdale and put her at the line with 3.1 seconds left. Grisdale’s first free throw stuck on the back heel of the rim. West Branch would secure the inbound and the narrow one point victory.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldogs with 22 points, 19 of which came in the 2nd half. Kailyn Brown finished with 13.

Poland finished the season at 22-3.

CRESTVIEW GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW (WITH AARON BLATCH)

COLUMBIANA, OH- Crestview is so close to a district championship, they can smell it. After defeating conference rival Liberty in the semifinals, the South Range Raiders are the only thing standing between the Rebels and the first championship for the program in 13 seasons.

Crestview is coming in with monumental energy after their last win. At the beginning of the season, one of the team goals set by the players was to “beat Liberty.” Before Wednesday night Crestview had lost five in a row to the Leopards including a couple of heartbreaking endings. But in the tournament, the Rebels looked like a different team. They limited turnovers, and held the Leopards to a lot of one and done possessions. Simply put they were undeniably the better team that night. That’s all it takes in the tournament, to be better for one night.

Now the Rebels turn their attention to second-seeded South Range who is coming off a dominating 58-28 win over Columbiana. The Raiders pose many challenges for the Rebels, but coach Blatch sees a lot of positive adjustments from his team in the last couple weeks of the season. They’re hoping they can gather up some more magic to pull off another upset and earn a trip to Cuyahoga Falls. YSN has you covered with a special championship preview with Rebel head coach Aaron Blatch. He and Anthony Hartwig talk about what the Win Over Liberty meant for the team, preparing for South Range, and more.
