THE HEARTBEAT OF THE WARRIORS RETIRES AFTER 33 YEARS

East Ashtabula, OH- Warriors family and friends gave a standing ovation and cheered loudly as they said thank you and farewell to the long time voice of Friday nights at Corlew Stadium, Greg Mendrala. After 33 years as the voice of the Edgewood Warriors, Greg Mendrala is stepping away from the microphone, leaving behind a legacy of passion, dedication, and community spirit. Mendrala, who has been the public address announcer for the Edgewood Warriors football team, marked his final game this season, capping off an illustrious career that spanned over three decades.

A local radio veteran, Mendrala is known for his roles as a morning show host for STAR 97.1, WFUN 970, and 102 ZOO in Ashtabula. His transition into high school football announcing came unexpectedly when former Athletic Director Al Goodwin asked him to fill in as the PA announcer just before the season began 33 years ago. Already comfortable behind the mic, Mendrala took on the role, and his enthusiasm and knack for engaging the crowd ensured his return every season since.

During an interview with YSN’s Larry Jennings at halftime of his final game, Mendrala reflected on his time as the Warriors’ announcer. While he couldn’t pinpoint a specific moment that stood out over the years, he expressed that the entire experience had been a joy. “I’ve loved every second of it,” Mendrala shared. His dedication and enthusiasm have made him a beloved figure in the Edgewood community, with his voice becoming synonymous with Warriors football.

Mendrala shared a humorous moment during the interview, noting that he knew it was time to step down when he started announcing the names of the sons of players he had called during his early years. But while he’s retiring from the PA booth, Mendrala isn’t planning to be far from the action. He mentioned his desire to remain involved with Edgewood football, potentially joining the YSN team to help cover the games he loves so much.

Edgewood Athletic Director Steve Kray also expressed his gratitude, noting that Mendrala’s presence over the years has been pivotal. “His enthusiasm has inspired generations of players and fans alike, making every game a memorable event. Thank you, Greg, for your remarkable contributions and for being the heartbeat of the Warriors,” Kray stated.

As Mendrala steps away, the Edgewood community is left with decades of unforgettable memories, his voice forever woven into the fabric of Warriors football. Though his time as PA announcer has come to an end, Mendrala’s impact will be felt for many years to come.

Thank you, Greg Mendrala, for 33 years of unforgettable moments.
