The first quarter saw a stark contrast in performance, with St. John struggling to find their footing and amassing a mere 8 points. Meanwhile, Bristol showcased their offensive prowess, securing a commanding lead with 23 points.

As the game progressed, Bristol continued to assert their dominance, scoring 24 and 16 points in the second and third quarters, respectively. St. John fought valiantly, but the relentless pressure from the Panthers limited their offensive opportunities.

Individual performances from standout players highlighted the game. Jayden Miller led Bristol with an outstanding 22 points, supported by a balanced contribution from his teammates, including Jack Berry and Mikey Burbach, who each scored 14 points.

On the St. John side, Aaron Wychock showcased his skills, contributing 7 points. However, the collective efforts of the Heralds were insufficient to overcome the relentless defensive pressure imposed by Bristol.

The key to Bristol’s triumph lay in their ability to press effectively, forcing an impressive 23 turnovers in the first half alone. This defensive prowess translated into 22 crucial points from transition baskets, setting the foundation for their comprehensive win.

Looking ahead, the St. John Heralds, with a current record of 0-3, will face the formidable Conneaut Spartans (2-0) in their next matchup on 12/09/23. The Spartans, coming off a 72-65 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats, will pose a challenging test for the Heralds.

The Rockets, fresh from a 69-34 defeat to the Mathews Mustangs, will look to bounce back, setting the stage for an intriguing matchup against the Panthers’ relentless offensive and defensive prowess.

EMCH WILL CALL PITTSBURGH HOME

COLUMBIANA OH- One of the best volleyball players in the area made a splash in the news last week as she made her college commitment known to the world. Crestview junior Abbey Emch announced that she has decided to continue her volleyball career at the University of Pittsburgh.

Last season Emch was near unstoppable in the Rebel attack as she finished with 439 kills for  23 win Crestview.  She averaged 5.2 kills per set and hit at a percentage of .408.  She also led the team in blocking totaling 96 on the season.  The well rounded athlete didn’t stop there as she also served up 55 aces.  All of her hard work was enough to get the attention of the Pitt coaching staff.

Pittsburgh is one of the best volleyball teams in the country. They finished last season ranked 4th in the AVCA coaches poll.  They finished 31-4 on the year and went to the NCAA Final Four where they fell to top ranked Louisville in 5 sets.

Emch ventures into her junior year of high school with plenty of goals left on the table for her career and team before putting on the blue and gold.  The top goal of course is to get Crestview a trip to Wright State to play in the State Tournament.  Abbey was able to take the time out of her day to come on YSN’s Running Point to talk about her commitment to Pittsburgh and what went into the decision. BRAVES DON’T LOOK BACK

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Braves took on their dreaded rival, The Bristol Panthers tonight at home. The Braves have not won against the Panther since the 2018-19 season. The Braves fell behind quickly in the first quarter but mounted a comeback at the end of the first to make it a one point deficit. The 2nd quarter is when the braves really found the momentum and found a small lead 32-27 going into halftime.

Badger then really put the petal to the metal in the 3rd quarter led by Duncan Moy, who put on an absolute show. Along with the 34 points Moy had multiple blocks, including a chasedown block during a pivotal stretch in the game.

Duncan had plenty of help from Brad Hamliton, who knocked down 16 points and the hot handed freshman, Preston Geracitano with 11 points. The Braves continued to put the pressure of the Panthers and it was too much for them to overcome as the Badger Braves came out with the huge win tonight 73-59. HAREN’S HEROICS BEAT PERRY AT THE BUZZER

LOUISVILLE OH- The game on Saturday between Louisville and Perry got wild down the stretch.  The two teams traded blows back and forth the whole time.  With the game tied at halftime at 23-23, the separation wouldn’t get much bigger in the second half.  Perry was grasping on to a 4 point lead with 1:19 to go in the game.  After Louisville would cut the lead down to 1 with a couple trips to the free throw line, Perry would have their chance at the charity stripe. With 5.9 seconds left on the clock, the Panthers missed the free throw, Louisville picked it up, got it to Brooke Haren who drained a deep three at the buzzer to give the Leopards a 51-49 win.

Haren would finish the game with 16 points, but I’d course none were important than those final three.  Taryn Miglich was next on the stat sheet with 13 points. Courtney Barwick tallied 12 points for the Leopards offense.  The Leopards shot 70% from the free throw line on their way to the win. They also hit eight shots from the perimeter.

Louisville wins their second home game of the season. It was the program’s 300th win inside their gym. It also moved head coach Jeff Couto up on the all time win list. He now sits at 145 wins.  He passed Garee McCully.  Louisville will continue their season as they host Dover on Saturday.

BRAVES BUILD ON BIG SECOND HALF

KINSMAN, OHIO- The Badger Braves girls basketball team took on the visiting Bristol Panthers. Both teams started out with some struggles on the offensive side with both teams just scoring 4 points each in the 1st quarter. Badger pulled away just a little and led at halftime 14-10.

The Lady Braves led by Katie Grexa really clicked together in the 2nd half starting out on a 12-0 run but the panthers finished the quarter on a 10-0 run. In the 4th quarter the braves really tightened up on the defensive side with several steals as they pulled away and defeated the panthers 45-27.

Katie Grexa put up 21 points in the winning effort tonight with some help from others including Hannah Betts who put up 11 points. The Braves improve to a record of 3-3 and will travel to Maplewood on monday to face the Rockets.

AUSTINTOWN OH-

In one of many volleyball games to kick off the high school season, Austintown Fitch opened up their season on Saturday morning. Their opponents? A Federal League Foe in The Massillon Perry Panthers! These two teams last met in 2021 as a part of a tri-match in which Austintown won two sets to none.

In their rematch from a year ago, both teams had different looks teamwise, as both teams graduated a fair number of players a season ago. One constant that returned from last year was senior superstar Jocelyn Jourdan, who had 14 Kills in the win against Perry in 2021.

She would end up being a huge contributor again the second time around, as Set 1 was back and forth all the way down to the end. Neither team was able to capture a lead larger than 4 points throughout the first set. But it was the play of freshman Rylie Simons, securing two aces to score the final two points in Set 1, winning it for Fitch 25-22!

In Set 2, The Falcons used that momentum from the prior set and forced Perry into a lot of mistakes early on. At one point, Austintown led by as much as eight points 17-9; however, Perry battled back! With the play of Sarah Mohr and Emma Weirich, Perry scored nine consecutive points to take an 18-17 lead. But Fitch showed composure, exchanging points but ultimately coming out on top 25-23 over The Panthers in Set 2.

By Set 3, Jocelyn Jourdan was on a different level! Finishing multiple kills emphatically, totaling 17 on the night, as Austintwon put the finishing touches on a 25-22 Set 3 win! A victory that lead to the overall match win that put Fitch at 1-0 on the season!

The Falcons will hit the road for the next three games, as the first game will be against a great program in Hathaway Brown. Stats for the match can be found below!
