GREER THE PIONEER

AKRON OH- Archbishop Hoban High School has a long and illustrious history of many great names
that have walked the halls of “The Castle” that sits on One Holy Cross Boulevard. Sports and success seemingly go hand-in-hand at Hoban, with multiple stats championships across a large variety of sports, primarily in the last ten years! Boys basketball got to enjoy a taste of the top when they completed a Cinderella story run to capture the Division 1 State Championship, the smallest D-1 school to do so.

However, in both recent, as well as, historic success for boys basketball at Hoban, there was never a Knight that stayed a Knight through the highest honor of going to West Point Military Academy and becoming a Black Knight! Hoban senior Josh Greer will be the first basketball player to blaze a trail to that next level when he has the opportunity to play football for Army.

It’s more than just sports for Josh Greer, it is about creating a legacy that generations of his family can be proud of. With a long history of community service and service in general with Hoban, Josh Greer sees it as taking it a step further, to serve at the highest possible level. Coming from a fantastic family, known for their love of athletics, The Army-Navy Game will now carry a little more meaning throughout the Greer household.

As The Knights basketball team navigates their way through the playoffs this year, it has a different feeling for Greer, knowing that anytime he laces up the Nikes, it could be his last. But staying in the moment is something Josh has excelled at since day one at Hoban and as he an the other Knights seniors lead their squad into districts, The Knights hope the postseason magic returns for one final run! WRESTLING WEDNESDAYS WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 13) FEATURING DALLAS MCCRACKEN

It’s finally here! A whole season worth of wrestlers fighting and grinding has led to one weekend in Columbus.  As YSN prepares for more coverage of the state tournament than ever before, we must ask what to expect on the mats? Good thing we have a couple of wrestling gurus who can answer all questions.  YSN has 44 wrestlers competing at state, and our very own Gary Althiser, and Chris Colucci are on the ball with all the info you’ll need in this state preview episode of Wrestling Wednesdays with Gary Althiser.

This episode’s special guest is one of those 44 wrestlers getting ready for the biggest stage this sport has to offer in high school.  Dallas McCracken has brought the limelight to United wrestling with consistent success.  As he hears up for his final time as a United Eagle he reflects on his career, and what got him here with the boys on Running Point.

MARIANA’S TRENCH

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- As a junior at Springfield, Mariana Tuscano has embraced the increased responsibility that comes with being an upperclassman, demonstrating leadership both on and off the court. Alongside her fellow returning starters, Mariana has spearheaded the team’s quest for success, determined to prove that they can continue to excel at a high level.

This season, Mariana and her teammates have once again showcased their dominance, capturing another MVAC championship and securing their third consecutive district title—a testament to their talent, dedication, and relentless work ethic. For Mariana, success has become a tradition, with district championships becoming a hallmark of her high school career.

Known for her sharpshooting ability from the perimeter, Mariana has continued to refine her game, focusing on expanding her offensive repertoire. While she has always been a threat from beyond the arc, this season she has added a new dimension to her game by attacking the hoop with increased aggression, making her a more well-rounded and versatile player. With her ability to hit shots from deep, she can sink shots as deep as the Mariana Trench.

Despite facing challenges on the court, Mariana has remained a steady presence for Springfield, contributing 8.6 points per game and leading the team with 29 made threes. Additionally, her defensive prowess has been on full display, averaging 2.3 steals per game, showcasing her ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor.

As Mariana looks ahead to the remainder of the season, she remains focused on achieving her goals and leading her team to even greater heights. With a district championship in every season of her high school career, she is determined to continue her winning ways and fight for a second regional championship, as the Tigers set their sights on a return to the state semifinals. With her skill, determination, and leadership, Mariana Tuscano is poised to leave an indelible mark on the Springfield girls’ basketball program and cement her legacy as one of the team’s all-time greats.

CAN’T SAY NO TO CASTRONOVA

CANFIELD OH- As a senior at Canfield High School, Sam Castronova embodies the spirit of determination and leadership that defines his team’s quest for a district championship. Alongside a talented group of seniors, Sam is driven by a hunger to etch their names in Canfield basketball history before graduation.

For Sam and his fellow seniors, years of playing together have forged a bond that transcends the court. Their shared experiences and camaraderie have cultivated a strong team chemistry, evident in their seamless execution and cohesion on game day.

On the court, Sam’s versatility shines through in Canfield’s multifaceted offense. Whether draining shots from beyond the arc or driving to the hoop with finesse, he poses a constant threat to opposing defenses, showcasing his adaptability and skill set.

Sam’s journey to success at Canfield hasn’t been without its challenges. Despite limited playing time during his junior high years, he refused to let setbacks deter him. Instead, he seized the opportunities presented to him during his freshman season, finding his stride and building confidence with each game.

This season, Sam has been a key contributor for Canfield, averaging 10 points per game and ranking second on the team in assists with 2 per game. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively highlights his value to the team’s success.

While basketball has been a significant part of Sam’s high school experience, he has set his sights beyond the court. Opting not to pursue college basketball, Sam has instead focused on achieving academic excellence, with plans to attend the prestigious Ohio State University. His dedication to his studies reflects his commitment to personal growth and achieving his long-standing goals.

AKRON OH- Following their win of the 2023 division 1 State Championship, The Archbishop Hoban
Knights would be in need of new faces to step up after losing a large and contributing senior class from the year prior. One of those new faces that knows a thing or two about basketball is Hoban’s newest combo guard in junior Kenny Scott! Starting at a very young age,

Scott found his love for basketball as early as he can remember. Always with a basketball in his hands and always wanting to improve, Kenny keeps the winners mentality of never being satisfied. Averaging over 9 points per game this season, Scott has become one of the main offensive options to go for Hoban this season. Not just a scorer, Kenny also leads his team in assists per game at 3.9!

Winners of a sectional title against Boardman at the time of this article, The Knights are now 16-7 on the season and see themselves right in the thick of another gauntlet of a division 1 tournament. One thing is for sure, as long as Kenny has the ball in his hands, good things are sure to happen! YSNs Ty Bartell got the opportunity to talk with The Knights junior about his move to Hoban, the culture of the team, his role with The Knights and some future goals for the junior. DESALVO CONTINUES TO BUILD HER LEGACY

HOWLAND OH- As the Howland girls basketball team embarks on a journey filled with redemption and resilience, senior standout Jessie DeSalvo emerges as a beacon of strength and determination. After a season devoid of seniors just a year ago, DeSalvo and her teammates returned with a renewed sense of purpose, driven by the valuable lessons learned from the challenges of the past.

AUSTINTOWN OH- As Destanie McCullough prepares to bid farewell to her high school basketball career at Austintown Fitch, her journey over the past four years reflects a commitment to excellence, unwavering leadership, and a relentless drive to elevate her team to new heights.

Since stepping foot onto the court as a freshman, McCullough poured her heart and soul into the Fitch basketball program. Through countless hours of practice, dedication, and perseverance, she honed her skills and emerged as a pivotal figure for the Falcons, both on and off the court.

McCullough’s leadership played a crucial role in propelling Fitch to one of its most successful seasons in program history. Her unwavering determination and ability to rally her teammates in the face of adversity were instrumental in guiding the Falcons to numerous victories and memorable moments on the court.

AUSTINTOWN OH- Few players have the natural ability to lead by example, the type where few words need
to be said and when they are true weight is held in every one that they speak. Leaders are not often chosen, rather the position chooses them. That is the case for Austintown-Fitch senior Ayla Ray! Now, you may have heard “the Ace of Base” lighting up box scores on a softball field before, but Ayla has rapidly become “The Ace of Lace” when she steps foot on the basketball court!

Averaging a team-high 11.6 point per game this season to go along with another team-high in made 3-point shots with 33 this year, “Ace” has been the place to get your helpful offense all year long. Coming from great parents, both Tatum and Renauld have shown unwavering support for their oldest daughter as she has blazed the trail for her younger sisters to follow. Always a special connection with her dad, Ayla and Renauld bonded over basketball despite the frequent coaching looks, Ayla could always count on the coach at home.

Although Ayla may be going to the next level for softball, there is no doubt in the waves that she has made in basketball! With plenty of noticeable improvements from freshman year until now, Ayla has proved and continued to prove that hard work pays off! YSNs Ty Bartell got the opportunity to sit down with “Ace” to recap the season so far, her role as a leader, The Falcons second sectional final win in 30 years and much more!
