GIRARD VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH PHIL WALTERS

GIRARD OH – The excitement is palpable as the Girard volleyball team prepares for an important regional semi-final matchup against Elyria Catholic tomorrow night at Berkshire High School. Head Coach Phil Walters, leading this resurgent squad, is optimistic yet cautious after a hard-fought season filled with tough competition and invaluable lessons learned.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” Coach Walters shared during the latest episode of YSN’s “Coach’s Corner.” “Our girls have worked tirelessly, and it’s great to see their efforts culminating in this district championship. But we’re not done yet. The focus now is on the challenge Elyria Catholic presents.” This season, Girard’s volleyball team has shown formidable resilience, enduring a grueling schedule with notable victories against top-ranked teams. The impressive win over Columbiana in a district semi-final match, despite facing a roaring away crowd, speaks volumes about the squad’s tenacity.

“We’ve played some of the toughest teams around, and it’s prepared us well for the post-season,” Walters noted. “Facing teams like Marlington, Lakeview, and others has made our girls grow, adapt, and respond under pressure.” Coach Walters also highlighted the pivotal role of his seniors—Nico Cochran, Alexis Beaton, and Bailey—whose hunger and dedication have been the driving force behind the team’s success. “Senior leadership is crucial. They know every game could be their last, and that intensity is unmatched,” Walters explained. “Their commitment and motivation have carried us this far.”

Fans are encouraged to come out in full support as the Girard squad takes on Elyria Catholic. The team thrives on the energy from a strong fan base, which has been crucial in previous matches. “We haven’t been in a regional semi since 2011,” Walters pointed out. “Having a big crowd there makes a difference. It motivates the girls and elevates their performance. We’re inviting everyone to come and be a part of this significant moment.” Join us in Berkshire tomorrow night to cheer on Girard as they aim for a spot in the regional finals. A victory could set up a thrilling all-YSN regional championship, with Crestview slated to play the late game.

SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 8) WITH DAVE RACH

CANFIELD, OH- As the scent of autumn fills the air and the leaves begin to turn, the South Range Raiders football team braces itself for the final hurdle before the playoffs. In an engaging discussion at Giangelo’s for the South Range Raiders Show, Coach Dave Rach opened up about the team’s relentless drive and the challenges ahead.

With an impressive undefeated streak, the Raiders recently clinched a crucial victory over Niles at Beau Rhine Stadium, a feat Coach Rach attributes to the team’s daily commitment to improvement. “Our guys know how special Friday nights are,” said Rach. “We want to get our money’s worth every time we lace them up.”

Looking ahead to their next matchup against Louisville, Rach emphasized the importance of treating every game like a playoff bout. Transitioning from conference to non-conference games, the Raiders are not allowing themselves any room for complacency. “We’re at the point where every game feels like a playoff game,” Rach noted. Facing Louisville, a team with a deceptively challenging record and significant on-field talent, South Range aims to test and prove its mettle one more time before entering the postseason.

Furthermore, Rach highlighted the value of senior leadership within the team, singling out Shaun Updegraff and Hunter Cooper for their contributions both on and off the field. Despite an injury sidelining Cooper, his commitment to supporting his teammates has not waned, providing a morale and strategic boost during practices.

While the focus remains on football, Rach’s lighter side was revealed as the conversation shifted to Halloween. Ranking the holiday’s favorite movies and expressing his unique array of fears—from snakes to clowns—Rach’s responses offered a humorous respite from the intense football discourse.

With only one regular season game left, the South Range Raiders are zeroing in on the playoffs with a sense of purpose and unwavering focus. As they prepare to face the Louisville Leopards, Coach Rach and his squad are poised to showcase the growth and resilience that have defined their season.

BIG PLAY PATER

BERLIN CENTER, OH-  As the Western Reserve Blue Devils prepare for their highly anticipated game against the Springfield Tigers, the excitement is palpable among both players and fans. The Blue Devils, riding an undefeated 6-0 record, host Springfield in what is arguably the most crucial matchup of their season.

Quarterback Chris Pater, the leader of this formidable squad, elaborated on last week’s victory against Cameron under tricky weather conditions. From a quarterback’s perspective, Pater admitted, “We had a lot of flaws. We looked pretty sloppy,” emphasizing the team’s current focus on refining their strategies and upping their performance standards.

Despite offensive challenges, the Blue Devils’ defense, led by Nate Hamburger, has been nothing short of stellar. “Our run defense especially has been outstanding this year,” Pater proudly noted, further highlighting their strong defensive lineup.

Historical context adds weight to this week’s game as well. “We haven’t beaten the Springfield Tigers in, I think, seven or eight years. This game is huge for us,” Pater said, reinforcing the motivation driving the Blue Devils. Host Chris Colucci chimed in with his own thoughts, claiming he personally favors the Blue Devils despite Springfield being statistically favored by three points.

The significance of home-field advantage isn’t lost on Pater. Describing the atmosphere at Western Reserve, he said, “It’s unbelievable. The stands are always packed. You can barely hear.” The support and energy from the home crowd could be a game-changing factor as the team steps onto the field.

Both on and off the field, the Blue Devils have demonstrated a synergistic dynamic, especially within the running back and quarterback room. Colucci dubbed the trio of Pater, Ricardi, and Darnie as a “three-headed monster,” to which Pater agreed, stating that their versatility presents a significant challenge for opposing defenses.

As the season progresses, Pater believes fine-tuning the smaller aspects of their game, such as blocking and route running, will be essential for continued success. Defensively, communication among the defensive backs is an area identified for improvement, ensuring complete synchronization between the lines.

Friday’s clash is not just about breaking a long-standing losing streak against the Tigers. It also represents a step closer to an undefeated season—a 7-0 tally that appears well within reach for this dedicated and talented team.

As fans eagerly await kickoff, plans are already set to continue the celebratory spirit beyond the game. Ben’s restaurant promises to open late, offering a communal space for fans to revel in the team’s performance, win or lose.

“Good luck this week, Chris,” Colucci signed off in his podcast, voicing what every Western Reserve fan is undoubtedly feeling. As the Blue Devils ready themselves for this pivotal game, one thing is certain—Friday night football has never been more exhilarating in Berlin Center, Ohio.

He credited the players and their families for their unwavering support and commitment, which have been instrumental in maintaining the team’s high standards.

WESTERN RESERVE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 4) WITH JOHN ARMENI

BERLIN CENTER, OH- In a Friday night showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Western Reserve football team staged a thrilling comeback to clinch an unforgettable victory against McDonald. Down 21-7 just before halftime, Coach John Armeni’s squad dug deep to turn the tide in a nail-biting game that left even the seasoned coach with a few extra gray hairs.

With over a minute to go in the first half and the ball in their possession, Coach Armeni seized the moment, urging quarterback Chris Pater to score before the break. “We used our hurry-up offense, something we practice a couple of times a week but rarely use until the situation dictates it. We executed it perfectly,” Armeni recounted in a post-game interview. Heading into halftime down by only one touchdown revitalized the team and sent a clear message to McDonald: They were far from finished.

A second-half surge saw Western Reserve pulling ahead, but McDonald fought back, knotting the score at 28-28 to force overtime. Winning the toss, McDonald opted to put Western Reserve on offense first. Coach Armeni’s strategy paid off, driving his team downfield to score and convert. True to their coach’s prediction, McDonald went for two after their own touchdown attempt, but defensive shuffling and sound preparation from Western Reserve made the difference. “Our best kids against their best kids. Who makes the play?” the coach noted, pointing to a key pass deflection that ultimately sealed the victory.

Standout performances came from both sides of the ball. Calebson anchored the defense, frequently charging into McDonald’s backfield, while Jack Darnay etched his name in highlight reels with an 89-yard rush and a sterling all-around performance including 180 rushing yards, 101 receiving yards, and ten tackles. “He’s grown as a leader, and the younger kids emulate that,” praised Armeni.

As Western Reserve moves forward with a 4-1 record, they look ahead to a grudge match against Louisville Rockets, the very team that ended their playoff run last year. “Our kids remember them ending our season. This game is one they want,” Armeni stated.

Despite the pressure and high stakes, Armeni instills a balanced perspective in his team. “I tell the guys all the time, you know, don’t wish it away. Enjoy the ride, because it can end at any moment.”

Reflecting on Louisville’s renowned concessions, Armeni humorously recalled a moment from early in his career when the taste of post-defeat Cavitelli briefly lifted spirits. This time, however, he and his team aim to return with a sweeter victory to savor.

Fans eagerly anticipate another hard-fought game, hoping Western Reserve can extend their season of thrilling performances.

WARREN JFK FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH DAMON BUENTE

WARREN, OH-  As the new football season continues, Warren JFK High School is showcasing a level of enthusiasm and determination like never before, thanks to the driving force of their head coach, Damon Bente. Known for his transparent and relentless approach, Bente is steering the Eagles towards excellence by emphasizing the core values that have historically defined JFK football.

During a recent episode of the “YSN’s Warren JFK Football Coach’s Corner” podcast, Bente shared insights into his strategies and philosophy for the team. A self-professed football junkie, Bente enjoys the off-season preparation just as much as the intensity of game days. “To be at a place where things matter…there’s fading qualities in American society that I think matter still here,” Bente stated, emphasizing values such as grit, chivalry, and service.

Reflecting on the previous season’s challenges, Bente acknowledged the team’s inconsistencies and his own role in improving them. “We have played five quarters of good football out of twelve quarters,” he candidly admitted. He vowed to hammer home consistency, believing this focus will yield better results.

Bente, who is anything but complacent, insists on self-scouting and returning to the basics to trim any excess from their playbook. “We should just be tweaking it, trimming the fat on both sides of the ball,” he explained. This meticulous approach is a testament to his dedication to the sport and the team.

A key takeaway from the podcast was Bente’s unwavering loyalty to the Kennedy football program. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the school’s high standards, even when facing formidable opponents. “When you are in the fire, I think that I’ve learned a lot more about people in my life when things go poorly than when things are going great,” Bente reflected.

Aside from football, Bente expressed profound gratitude for his family, attributing his drive to their influence. “You need to provide value and service to others,” he said, aligning his personal philosophy with his professional mission.

With the support of his dedicated coaching staff and a team of eager players, Damon Bente is committed to upholding the legacy of Warren JFK’s football excellence. As the Eagles gear up for their next challenge, one thing is clear: under Bente’s leadership, they are poised to soar higher than ever before.
