LEOPARDS SHOW GRIT AGAINST REIGNING REGIONAL CHAMPS

LOUISVILLE OH- Louisville knew all too well how hard their first game of the year was going to be when the schedule came out.  To open their new campaign they welcomed in Massillon Jackson who made it all the way to Dayton last season. Returning one of the best players in the state in future Wisconsin Badger Leena Patibandla, the Polar Bears are no joke.  The Leopards went toe to toe with Jackson, but in the end they couldn’t stand up to their strength and fell 62-44.

Taylor McCully led the way for the Leopards with 14 points. Courtney Barwick was also in double figures with 11.  Taryn Miglich contributed 9 points to the cause. The Polar Bears were led by Patibandla with a game-high 21.

Louisville will stay at home on Saturday as they host Green. Tip off for that game is set for 1:30.

POLAR BEARS PUT THE FREEZE ON BOARDMAN

BOARDMAN OH-

Boardman (1-2) fell behind early and was unable to rebound dropping a 43-14 decision to the Jackson Polar Bears (2-1) on Friday night.

The Polar Bears would score on its opening possession and then score two more times following Spartan turnovers to take a 19-0 lead 7 minutes into the first quarter.  The Spartans would respond, however, with a nice drive and to yard touchdown run by Tomas Andujar to cut the lead to 19-7.

Unfortunately, that was not enough for Boardman as Jackson went on to score the next 24 points before the Spartans were able to respond with a Willy Torres five yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Boardman 14 for the day.

Defensively, Tequan Bailey recorded his first career interception picking on a pass in the fourth quarter for Boardman.

The Spartans will look to rebound next week with a trip to Howland Friday September 9th.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM.

BOARDMAN EARNS SPLIT WITH FEDERAL LEAGUE POWER

GAME 1:

Both teams were strong in the pitcher’s circle on Saturday, but Jackson was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over Boardman on Saturday. Tori Strines started the game for Boardman Spartans and recorded all 21 outs.

A single by Madison Lester in the first inning was a positive for Boardman.

Purdue commit Julia Gossett was the winning pitcher for Jackson. The hurler lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and zero runs while striking out 13 and walking one.

Strines took the loss for the Spartans. The righty went seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out seven.

Jenna Olexa went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Boardman in hits. The Spartans didn’t commit a single error in the field. Cassidy Bryan had nine chances in the field, the most on the team.

Ashley Hauritz led Jackson with two hits in four at bats. Jackson was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Morgan Christopher had the most chances in the field with 13.

GAME 2:

Scorekeepers were kept busy today during a high-scoring contest between Boardman and Jackson where Boardman prevailed 12-6.

The Spartans opened up scoring in the first inning when Cami Goske singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Boardman took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third Jenna Madick doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run and Tori Strines singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.

The Spartans notched six runs in the sixth inning. Madison Lester, Madison Wymer, Cassidy Bryan, and Nadia Rawhneh all drove in runs in the frame.

Lester earned the victory in the pitcher’s circle for Boardman. Lester lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and six runs, four of them earned while striking out six and walking one.

Aubree Snow took the loss for Jackson. Snow allowed 16 hits and 12 runs over six innings, striking out one and walking one.

Boardman socked two home runs on the day. Bryan went yard in the sixth inning. Lester put one out in the first inning.

The Spartans tallied 16 hits. Lester, Strines, Bryan, Wymer, and Jenna Olexa all collected multiple hits. Lester went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead in hits.

Jackson tallied nine hits in the game. Gossett and Hauritz all had multiple hits. Gossett led with three hits in four at bats.

WEST BRANCH KEEPS POLAR BEARS COLD

BELOIT OH-  West Branch had a strong Saturday showing on a beautiful day for softball as they beat a tough Massillon Jackson team 5-0.

Ryley Pittman got the win in the circle. The complete game shutout against a Federal League powerhouse. Highlighting the Warriors offense was                  Sydney Mercer going 4-4, with a double, a triple, and 1 RBI. Skyler Greeneisen  had a double.                         Addi Craven finished with a double, and 1 RBI.        The Warriors added singles by Ryley Pittman, Josie Millikin and Madi Hawk

The Warriors next game is Monday at home against Youngstown Ursuline at 4:30. This is the second meeting of the year between the two teams.

LOUISVILLE CANT KEEP UP WITH POLAR BEARS

LOUISVILLE OH- Louisville’s schedule never gets easier. They learned that on Friday night as the Leopards took a tough loss to power house Massillon Jackson 5-0.

The game was never out of reach for the Leopards, but their offense just couldn’t string together hits. Matti Benson, and Kenzie Denzer went a combined 2-6 at the top of the Leopards line up. Jenna Collins put in a 1-3 day. Chelsea Thouverin followed her up with a 1-3 day and the only extra base bit of the day for Louisville with a double.

Even though Jackson scored 5 runs, only 2 of them were earned for starter Katie Heath. She went all 7 innings throwing 106 pitches. She struck out one, and gave up 8 hits.

Jackson is still undefeated on the season at 7-0. Louisville will try to bounce back with two games on Saturday. They’ll play Hillsdale at 1:00, and then they’ll play Lake after.

POLAR BEARS PUT A STOP TO THE TIGERS RUN

MASSILLON OH- Howland came into Tuesday’s district semifinal with all the confidence in the world. They got to this game by beating league rival Canfield for the second time of the season. Standing in their way of a trip to the district championship was the Polar Bears of Massillon Jackson. Two big Polar Bear runs weee the difference as Jackson knocked out the Tigers with a 64-30 win.

The first Polar Bear run came in the first quarter, and leaked into the second. After the game started back and forth, the Polar Bears turned a 7-6 lead into a 19-6 one in the blink of an eye. The Tigers responded by winning the second quarter overall 13-10 and taking a 29-19 deficit into the locker room.

The Tigers came out of the locker room and scored quick to make it a 29-21 game. That however would be their only points from the floor in the frame as the Polar Bears won the third 30-3 and pretty much put the game away.

Senior Taylor Lawrence led the Tigers getting in double figures with 11. Alyssa Massucci finished with 7.

The Tigers finish the season 18-7 and AAC champions. We at YSN want to congratulate the Tigers on an incredible season! Thank you for bringing us on the ride!

SPARTANS JUST FALL SHORT

MASSILLON OH- Boardman made the trip to Massillon on Friday night to take on the Polar Bears of Jackson. It ended up being a frigid result for the Spartans as they fell just short 20-14.

Boardman got on the board first when Fernando Ortiz ran one in from 11 yards out. Their next touchdown would come from Anthony Hightower who ran one in on the one. Hightower threw for 118 yards on the night. Boardman had the ball with just over 2:00 left trailing 20-14, but could not muster a game winning drive.

Boardman will look to bounce back in Week 4 as they hist Howland.

LEOPARDS FALL TO JACKSON ON SENIOR NIGHT

LOUISVILLE OH- It was senior night in Louisville and the Leopards recognized three players that brought a state championship to the program in 2019. Massillon Jackson spoiled the party though as they came in to Leopard country and stole the 6-4 win.

Matti Bensen went 3-3 on the day for the Leopards having a perfect time at the plate. She also walked, and scored 2 runs. Senior Kaylee Nolte went 1-4 with an RBI. Shelby Mayle went 1-3 with a walk.

Cloie Ensley got the start in the circle and threw all 7 innings for the Leopards. She gave up 14 hits and 6 runs. She struck out 1.

The Leopards honored their three seniors, Kaylee Nolte, Cloie Ensley, and Lauren Stillwagon.

SPARTAN’S SEASON ENDS AGAINST JACKSON

Boardman lost the district semifinal game to state ranked Jackson in 3 sets. (25-19 25-22 25-12). It wasn’t without lack of effort as the girls took the floor for their last time as a group. Leading the Spartans on the night was Maria Torres with 10 kills, 8 digs and 3 blocks. Katie Stamp had 7 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Raegan Burkey lead the offense with perfection, contributing 24 assists and 2 digs. Jenna Olexa had 5 kills on the night, while Paige Snyder had 2. Kathryn O’Horo wore the libero jersey for the night, picking up 10 digs. Ryleigh Neill made per presence at the net known with 4 timely blocks and Lanny Kilpatrick added 2 digs.

The Spartans finish the season with a record of 16-9.
