ITS DADO’S DAY IN THE SUN

CANFIELD OH- Last season as a freshman Madi Dado made her name known to the South Range softball fans, and the softball community. Not only did Dado become an integral part of the Raiders lineup last season, but she made two big game saving catches in their tournament run to the state championship.

Now coming into her sophomore season, Dado’s name is firmly on everyone’s radar. She loves the attention. She knows that while it brings pressure, it also validates the hard work she has put into her game.  The extra attention from opposing scouting reports hasn’t slowed Dado down one bit either. She is still one of the top hitters in the district. Pitchers will find it a tall task to keep Dado off the base paths.  Spending most of the season at the top of the order, you can easily see why the Raiders offense runs through her.

Madi is currently batting .484 on the season. That puts her second on the team.  Her on base percentage breaks the .500 mark sitting at .515.  Dado leads the team in hits with 44. Dado also leads the team in stolen bases with 18.  Madi takes a lot of pride in patrolling center field for the Raiders this season. She has played nearly perfect out there. She has made just one error all season.  She leads the Raiders outfield in putouts.

Dado took the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her campaign and the upcoming regional semifinal against Tuslaw. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about her success this season, keeping up the Raiders prestige as a program, and much more. Drop the anchors and get ready for regionals with the latest South Range softball player profile.

BRING US HOME, BARTELS

CANFIELD OH- You never know who is going to step up for a team during a long tournament run. The best teams have someone knew come up big every time out. For South Range in their district championship game against Gilmour Academy, it was Gretchen Bartels who put on the cape. It didn’t matter that she hit in the bottom half of their lineup, she blasted two home runs on the day, which turned out to be the difference in the Raiders 5-1 win.

Bartels works hard to always keep a positive mindset. She might have the shortest memory of anyone.  That can be tough for an underclassman. You see a lot of young players put pressure on themselves to succeed and be perfect at the varsity level. The reality of this sport is, you’re not going to be perfect. Bartels is always moving on to the next play. This was proven in that district championship. In one of the first balls hit to her, Bartels was charged with an error. She was busy the rest of the night and made every play after that. At the plate during the at bat that led to her first home run, she went down 0-2. She didn’t panic, stayed within herself and then launched one.

Bartels currently hit .342 with 2 home runs, 7 doubles, and 24 RBI.  Her on base percentage is .378.  The two home runs moved her slugging percentage above .500.  Her fielding percentage is .900 with 59 total chances at third base.

Bartels took the time to hop on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk to the gang about her big night, and her whole season.  She also talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about her mindset, her love for the sport, and so much more.  Hoist the colors and check out the latest South Range softball player profile exclusively on YSN.

ALL STATE SZOLEK!

CANFIELD OH- South Range has had a bushel of success over the last decade. However one thing they have looked for is a consistent dominant defensive catcher. You look at the Raiders history since 2012, theyve plugged in a lot of different players behind the plate. A lot more than they’ve had pitchers in the circle.  Although the players who have put on the gear have been capable, and did everything the coaches asked, Kelly Szolek has come in and firmly given the Raiders their first elite catcher in quite some time. That’s huge for a program who since 2010 hasn’t had a pitcher in their circle who hadn’t gone to college.

It was clear last season that Szolek took a hold of the position, now as a junior she has elevated her game even higher than before. Her bat had jumped to higher numbers, and her work behind the plate has been phenomenal. Her efforts never went unnoticed by the state of Ohio. She was named First Team All Ohio this season.  That is a title that is completely earned.

After catching a seasoned veteran last year in Bree Kohler, now Szolek manages a tandem of younger pitchers taking their first season of consistent varsity innings. Kelly has been a tremendous calming influence to the pitching staff of the Raiders. With the velocity that they bring in, there has to be trust in the catcher. Szolek’s numbers speak for herself on how trustworthy she is.  She only has 1 passed ball all season in 167 innings caught. Kelly set a goal this season to get better at throwing runners out on the base paths, now she’s one of the best in the state at doing that. She has caught 15 base runners stealing and has a 55% caught stealing rate. She also has picked off a runner once this season.  Szolek has also only made 1 error all season.

When you add those impressive stats to her offensive numbers it is no secret why she was selected all Ohio. Szolek leads the team in batting average at the moment hitting .517.  She has 8 doubles a home run and 21 RBI.  Im 82 at bats Szolek has only struck out 8 times. She’s drawn 13 walks.

Kelly took the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk to Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about her season and being a part of this program. They also discuss her personal goals on the year, her work ethic, and much more. Release the anchors and sail with the Raiders! Check out the latest South Range player profile.

RAIDERS GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO THEIR BIG GOAL

CANFIELD OH- To win a state championship, you have to go through two other brackets. On Thursday night, South Range achieved the first step to a bigger goal. They won their 9th district championship in 12 seasons with a 5-1 win over Gilmour Academy. The celebration was calm and mellow, the Raiders know they still have a lot of business to attend too before their journey is up.

For two teams that hit the ball extremely well, this game started out as a pitcher’s duel. Both teams spent the first several innings getting runners aboard and not being able to move them home. That changed in the 3rd inning when Gilmour Academy scored first on an RBI hit by pitch. In that inning the Lancers loaded the bases with an error, infield single, and intentional walk before scoring a run.

The Raiders quickly answered in the bottom of the frame when Jamie Feren tripled, and then was hit in by Kelly Szolek to tie the game. After holding the Lancers scoreless in the fourth, the Raiders opened up the bottom of the frame with back to back singles. Enter Gretchen Bartels.  Bartels fell behind 0-2, worked there count full, and then blasted a home run to center field. The three run shot would be the turning point of the game for the Raiders.

Juli Stachowicz entered the game in the circle in the fifth. She kept the Lancers quiet the rest of the way. In her three innings pitched she gave up 1 hit and struck out 5.  Sam Susany started the game. She also only gave up a hit in 4 IP and struck out a pair. The run she gave up was unearned.

Bartels wasn’t done yet, she came back up in the 6th inning and hit her second home run of the game to extend the Raiders lead to 5-1. It was a dramatic finish to the game as Gilmour tried to make some 2 out noise. After a walk, and a steal, Megan Mlinaric singled up the middle. Allison Schuh raced around third looking to score, but Madi Dado made a laser throw out of center to throw her out at the plate to end it.

South Range advances to the regional semifinals where they’ll match up with Tuslaw for the second year in a row.  They’re set to play Wednesday at 1:00 at Ravenna.
