CLIPPERS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE

COLUMBIANA OH- Columbiana defeated Salem 10-0 on Monday thanks in part to six runs in the fifth inning. Caitlynn Pleska hit a solo home run to right field, Mackenzi Gamble hit a solo home run to center field, Anna Yonker singled, scoring one run, Ella Dota drew a walk, scoring one run, and Lewis induced Cameron Perkins to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.

Columbiana got on the board in the first inning after Ava Davanzo singled, scoring two runs.

The Clippers added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Salem committed an error, and Pleska hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Gamble earned the win for Columbiana. She gave up one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking none.

Gamble and Pleska were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits. Davanzo and Pleska each drove in two runs. Perkins stole two bases.

Columbiana didn’t commit a single error in the field. Perkins had the most chances in the field with eight.

SALEM OH- Quaker country, are you ready for spring? The girls that lace up their gloves on the softball diamond sure are.  The Quakers have a squad that is overflowing with returning experience that is hungry to prove that they belong in the local conversation.  You’ll find plenty of young experienced players that not only promise to do great things for Salem this year, but also for years to come.  They’ll create the building blocks to keep the program alive and well.

Salem is once again led by head coach Michael Thorpe. He was gracious enough to take the time to talk about the upcoming season with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig. CARDINALS SLIP BY SALEM FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON

UNIONTOWN OH- In a hard-fought battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Canfield took a significant step closer to their championship aspirations with a gritty 43-35 victory over Salem in the district semifinal showdown on Wednesday. The game remained deadlocked at 29-29 heading into the fourth quarter, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.

Leading the charge for Canfield was Camie Dill, who delivered a stellar performance with a game-high 14 points, showcasing her scoring prowess and clutch play when it mattered most. Carly Fleming also made significant contributions with 11 points, while Cami Hritz added 6 points to bolster Canfield’s offensive attack.

Salem put up a formidable fight, with Reese Davidson-Chuck leading the way with 13 points, followed closely by Rylee Hutton with 11 points and Maddy Andres with 7 points. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Canfield’s resilience and determination down the stretch.

With the win, Canfield punches their ticket to the District Final on Saturday, where they will face off against Akron St. Vincent St. Mary. The highly anticipated matchup is scheduled for 7:00 at Uniontown Lake High School, as Canfield looks to continue their postseason journey with hopes of capturing championship glory.

HUTTON HITS MILESTONE IN SALEM’S UPSET VICTORY

In an upset that sent shockwaves through the tournament, Salem pulled off a remarkable victory on the road against Perry to claim the sectional championship. The Quakers showcased their defensive prowess, stifling Perry’s offense en route to a hard-fought 34-27 win.

Adding to the excitement of the victory, Salem’s Rylee Hutton reached a significant milestone, surpassing 1000 career points in the midst of the team’s triumph. Despite entering the tournament as the 30th seed, Salem has been on a remarkable tear, riding a four-game winning streak characterized by tenacious defense and resilient performances.

Incredibly, Salem’s defensive dominance has been a key factor in their recent success, as they have held their opponents to under 45 points in each of their last four victories. Notably, two of the teams they defeated during this stretch, Fitch and Springfield, are still alive in the tournament, underscoring Salem’s ability to compete with the best.

Looking ahead, Salem sets their sights on the district semifinal showdown against Canfield. The highly anticipated matchup is scheduled for Wednesday at Uniontown Lake, with tip-off slated for approximately 7:30.

SALEM TAMES WILDCATS IN OPENING ROUND

SALEM, OH- In a local  OHSAA tournament showdown, the 30th-ranked Lady Quakers triumphed over the 39th-ranked Struthers with a solid 49-38 victory, securing their ticket to the second round.

Rylee Hutton emerged as the star of the game, delivering an impressive performance with a game-high 29 points, leading her team to victory. Adding to the Quakers’ success, Lauryn Barton contributed 8 points, playing a pivotal role in securing the win.  Hutton is 11 points shy of the 1000 career point mark heading into the second round.

Despite the efforts of the Struthers squad, led by Gianna Martin’s 17 points and Emma Morris’ 10, they couldn’t overcome the Lady Quakers’ determined play.

Looking ahead, the Lady Quakers now set their sights on a challenging match-up against the #14 seed Perry Pirates. The showdown is set for Saturday, February 24th, at 1pm at Perry, promising to be an exciting clash between two formidable teams as the tournament action heats up.

FOLGER BREWING UP SUCCESS

SALEM OH- Sophomore Ryan Folger has brought a wave of excitement and enthusiasm to the Salem swim program, making history as the first male swimmer in school history to qualify for the state championships. His achievement marks a significant milestone for Salem, with Folger being the first overall swimmer to reach the state level since 2000.

Folger’s journey to state has been fueled by his unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of excellence. After narrowly missing the cut last season, he dedicated himself to rigorous training and focused on improving his performance in the pool. His hard work paid off, as he secured qualification for the state championships this year in the 200 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley, cementing his status as one of Salem’s top swimmers.

In addition to his impressive state qualification, Folger has left an indelible mark on Salem’s swimming program by setting multiple school records. With records in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyle, as well as the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Breaststroke, and 100 Butterfly, Folger has established himself as a standout performer in a variety of events. His versatility and skill in the pool have set him apart from his peers and positioned him as a force to be reckoned with in the swimming community.

Despite his already impressive list of accomplishments, Folger remains humble and hungry for success. With two more years left in his high school career, he is poised to achieve even greater heights in the pool. His dedication, work ethic, and passion for swimming serve as an inspiration to his teammates and a testament to his potential for future success.

QUAKERS START SLOW, FINISH STRONG AGAINST SPRINGFIELD

NEW MIDDLETOWN, OH- It’s all about setting the pace, and for Salem- it took being on the wrong end of a Springfield 5-0 run to wake the jumpshots, and go on a 14-0 run themselves to finish to the tune of 56-33.

Led by standout performances from Rylee Hutton, who commanded the court with a game-high 22 points, and Lauren Barton, who contributed 11 points to the scoreboard, the Lady Quakers showcased their offensive prowess and teamwork throughout the game. Their dynamic play and strategic execution propelled Salem to a decisive victory, capping off their regular season on a high note.

Despite facing a formidable opponent, the  Lady Tigers demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the contest. Jameka Brungard led the charge with an impressive 14 points, while Ava Vecchione contributed 10 points to the Lady Tigers’ efforts. Despite their valiant performance, the Lady Tigers were unable to overcome Salem’s relentless offensive attack and suffocating defense.

With the regular season now concluded, the Lady Tigers look ahead with optimism and determination as they prepare for postseason play. Despite the setback, the team remains focused on their goals and committed to making a strong showing in the upcoming playoffs.

Salem finishes their regular season campaign on Saturday against Austintown Fitch.

BEAVERS FEEL GOOD GOING TO POSTSEASON

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- In a hard-fought battle on Tuesday night, Beaver Local emerged victorious, holding off Salem to notch their 10th win of the season with a final score of 61-50. It was a game marked by intense competition and determined efforts from both sides, but Beaver Local’s resilience and offensive prowess ultimately proved to be the difference-maker.

Leading the scoring charge for Beaver Local was Austin Cline, who delivered an impressive 16-point performance, showcasing his scoring ability and leadership on the court. Owen Hill and Hunter Warrick contributed 12 points each, adding to Beaver Local’s balanced offensive attack.

Despite Salem’s efforts, led by Cam Sampson with 13 points and Trent Fink with 12 points, they struggled to contain Beaver Local’s offensive firepower and fell short in their attempts to mount a comeback.

With this win, Beaver Local concludes their regular season with a record of 10-12, setting the stage for the upcoming tournament. Their first tournament game is scheduled for February 27th, as they travel to Minerva in pursuit of postseason success.

Meanwhile, Salem, with a record of 5-14, will look to regroup as they prepare to host United on Friday. Despite the loss, Salem remains determined to finish their season on a high note and showcase their potential in their remaining matchups.
