SALEM STAYS ON THEIR HOT START

ALLIANCE OH- After a couple of big non conference wins to open the season, Salem topped off EBC play on Wednesday night at Alliance. Nothing was about to cool off the hot Quakers as they rolled out of Alliance with a massive 59-29 victory.

Abbie Davidson had a great night leading the way with 17 points.  Rylee Hutton was also in double figures for the Quakers offense with 12 points.  Zoie Reed and Kami Rohm both chipped in 8 points to help out the cause.  Kaylee Carlisle finished with 7 points.

Salem will stay on the road in conference play on Saturday as they travel to Minerva.  The tip off is set for 1:15.

QUAKERS NAIL DOWN NILES

NILES OH- Both teams suffered from losing seasons last year and were looking to bounce back in 2022, but only one would come out on top on Tuesday.  After a close first half which saw the Quakers only leading the Red Dragons by four, the tables would turn in the second half as Salem went on a three point streak winning by the final of 78-64.

For coach Andres’ team, the leader was Caden Swiger who showed swagger on the court, dropping 23 points.  The next to lead the pack was Camden Sampson with 17, Trent Fink with 12, Lance Bailey scoring nine points, eight for Ross Davidson and six for sophomore Evan Jones.  Swiger and Sampson were dangerous behind the arc with Sampson hitting two in the fourth.  For Niles, Sam Perrone got the first points on the board during their opening 7-0 run, but soon collapsed in the second half.  Perrone finished with 16 points.  Stefon Dorsey finished with 12 points after being banged up in the later part of the game, Robert Strickland scored 12 points and Anthony Budak, the Olmstead Transfer and Niles quarterback studied up his basketball game and scored 13 off the bench.

Salem will travel to their neighbors in Alliance on Friday, while Niles will host Champion on Friday at the Memorial Gymnasium.  After the game, Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Jeff Andres to talk about the big performance and what to expect against Alliance.

SALEM DEFENSE PAVES THE WAY TO VICTORY

SALEM OH- There might have been some extra motivation on Wednesday night when Salem welcomed in Mooney. Last season, the Cardinals upset Salem in Youngstown.  The Quakers we’re having none of that this time around.  Their defense put the clamps down on the Cardinals on their way to a 53-18 victory.

Abbie Davidson led the way for Salem with an impressive 21 points. Rylee Hutton chipped in a career high 19 points to add to the Quakers offense. Salem returns to action on Wednesday as they start their conference slate on the road at Alliance.  Mooney will return home on Saturday and take on Struthers.

SALEM BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JEFF ANDRES

SALEM OH- The weather outside might be getting colder, but the gym inside of Salem high school could not be hotter.  Salem is bringing back a ton of pieces from a young team last season. Add that to the fact that they are once again led by an experienced, and highly respected coaching staff the Quakers are going to be for real this season. Last year Salem finished the season 9-14 but won 4 of their last 6, including a big win over rival West Branch.  Salem will start this campaign with a ton of momentum, and it all starts on November 29th at Niles.

Cosch Jeff Andres is so highly respected in the coaching community. He took the time to talk with YSN’s Ty Bartell to give us a glimpse of what to expect this season. They talk about the tough EBC they play in, what makes a good schedule, and so much more.  Quaker Crazies get out in full force this season and check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Jeff Andres.

SALEM STARTS FAST TO OPEN NEW SEASON

SALEM OH- Last season, Salem was defined by their defense. They broke program records for points surrendered on the season.  On Friday night the first day of girls basketball in the state of Ohio, Salem was able to pick up where they left off last season and beat Howland 52-32.

Kami Rohm led the Quakers offense to start the season. She finished with 13 points.  That score was a game-high.  Rylee Hutton was also in double figures on the night finishing with 10 points.  Lauryn Barton drilled a pair of threes to finish with 6 points.

Sophia Powell led the Tigers with 6 points. The Quakers were able to slow down Alyssa Massucci as she only finished with 5, and hit just one three pointer.

Salem continues the season on Wednesday as they’ll stay home to host Mooney.  Howland looks ahead to their home opener on November 28th against Ursuline.

SALEM GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH SARAH HAMILTON

SALEM OH- The time has come once again to get excited about high school basketball.  Salem is coming off of one of their best seasons in program history so there are plenty of reasons to get excited for Quaker fans. Last season the Quakers finished the year with a record of 20-5 (10-2). They went all the way to the Regional Final before falling short against Norton. Although they graduated 5 seniors, the Quakers have a lot of pieces to work with that should keep them one of the best girls programs in the area.

Head coach Sarah Hamilton is back for another year at the helm of the Quakers. She was kind enough to take her time and talk to YSN’s Ty Bartell to help preview the season.  She talks about the ride last year was, how this team will separate themselves from last season’s, and so much more. Roll with the Quakers and take a look at Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Sarah Hamilton

QUAKERS CANT OVERCOME OLD EBC RIVAL

The 2022 Salem Quaker football team met an untimely end on Friday night at the hands of former EBC foe Canton South 28-21. The Quakers found themselves down 21-0 at halftime and were unable to completely claw back into it.

An uncharacteristically slow start for Salem in the 1st half told the story. Of their 1st half drives, two ended in interceptions by South, giving them new life to which they would capitalize to the tune of 14 points. That would prove to be a deficit too insurmountable for Salem to overcome on this night. Salem would mount a comeback in the second half, recovering an onside kick to start the 3rd quarter, and twice getting within one score, just couldn’t get any closer.
Junior quarterback Poochie Snyder would lead the way for the Wildcats as he’s done all season. He would finish the night 16-23 for 203 yards and three scores (Pugh), one of which was an acrobatic scramble that saw him elude numerous Quaker defenders and complete a 7 yard strike. That score made it 28-14 in the 4th, all but sealing the fate of the Quakers. He would also be helped by Freshman tailback Xion Culver, who would chip in 124 yards of his own on the ground, to go with 145 from Snyder.
For Salem, the loss marks the end of a record setting career for quarterback Jackson Johnson, who holds every passing and nearly every rushing record in Salem HS history. For the night he would finish 14-24 for 234 yards passing and add another 49 yards and three scores on the ground.
Salem finishes their season at 6-5, while Canton South moves on the play the 2-seeded Beaver Local Beavers next week.
