SALEM PUTS THE CHILL ON THE AVIATORS

SALEM OH- It may have felt like the middle of February but the Quaker offense was red hot Wednesday night at Ray Reasbeck Field putting up ten runs to take down the Alliance Aviators in 6 innings and earn their 9th straight victory. After starting pitcher Carson Rhodes wriggled out of a first inning bases loaded jam without surrendering a run, the offense went to work. Blaize Exline led off the game with a base hit to left field. After stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Darius Beck drove him home with a fielder’s choice to the shortstop.

The Quakers weren’t done though as with two outs, Gavin Wilms had a base hit, and then went first to third on a base hit from left hander Corey Riesen and would score on a base hit by Carson Rhodes to make it 2-0 good guys.

Exline would provide another jolt of offense in the second as he hit a laser beam home run over the left field fence to make it 3-0 Salem.

The Quakers would add 4 in the third inning on the strength of a another RBI single by Rhodes, a throwing error from the catcher that let Riesen score, an RBI double by Lance Bailey and a fielders choice by Cayden Burt that scored Brock Young making it 7-0 Salem.

That was plenty of support for Carson Rhodes as he threw all 6 innings punching out 8 Alliance batters allowing 3 hits and zero runs to earn his 4th win of the year.

The Quakers would walk it off in the 6th as Rhodes continued his impressive day with a 2 run single to right field to give him 3 RBI’s on the day. The game would come to an end on a Cayden Burt single to left field scoring Corey Riesen.

The Quakers are now 10-3 overall and 5-3 in the EBC. The Quakers will try and make it 10 in a row tomorrow as they will host Minerva with the first pitch set for 5 pm.

SALEM SUSPENDS AVIATORS FLIGHTPLAN

ALLIANCE OH- The Quakers scoreless innings streak did come to an end Tuesday night in Alliance at 24 innings but it wasn’t because of poor pitching. Gavin Wilms followed up his no hit performance from last week with a 1 hit, 1 run, 10 strikeout performance against the Aviators to help get Salem its 8th straight victory.

It wasn’t easy for Wilms as he gave up 6 walks on the day and had 3 errors behind him but the big right hander made the pitches when he needed them and was able to go the distance to earn his 3rd EBC victory of the year.

Despite the cold temperatures, the Quaker offense stayed warm racking up 7 hits along with some loud outs on nice defensive plays by Alliance.

Jackson Johnson got the Quakers started with an RBI single in the third that scored Lance Bailey who reached base with a single of his own before stealing second base to get into scoring position for Johnson.

Wilms helped his own cause with 2 hits including a double to lead off the 6th inning that would eventually give the Quakers an insurance run and a 2 run lead when Wilms would be waved home on a Corey Riesen RBI single.

Darius Beck and Blaize Exline each added hits of their own and Exline added a steal to his total as well.

The Quakers are now 9-3 (4-3 in the EBC) and will host the Aviators at Ray Reasbeck field tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 5pm.

SALEM SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH MICHAEL THORPE

SALEM OH- One word to describe Salem softball this season would definitely be resilient. Despite some tough losses along the way, Salem has managed to get back up time and time again. They are always focused on the next challenge at hand. They came home from a great trip to Tennessee and have had serious success back home.  The Quakers still have a great chance to achieve one of their big goals this year which is to match the program record for wins in a season with 15.

Coach Thorpe was able to take the time to come on Running Point this week to talk with Ty Bartell. He was sporting a pretty cool hair due, you’ll have to check it out. Ty also hears about some great stories from the trip, how the girls are stepping up this season, and much more. Quaker fans have to check out Episode 2 of Coach’s Corner with Michael Thorpe.

QUAKERS DOMINATE FOR SECOND WIN OF THE DAY

SALEM OH-  Wow … Senior Rylie Troy toed the rubber in both wins today, pitching 15 total innings. Despite a very warm day Miss Troy never let the opponents see her sweat. She struck out 11 Wildcats in this game & got stronger as the game went on including 6 K’s in the last three innings. All three outs in the 7th inning came via the strikeout. Well done young lady!

This game looked like another low scoring close game until Salem broke it open with an 8 run 5th inning to run their season record to 8-9. The Quakers stole 7 bases to impose their will on the scoreboard.

Channing Toy had two singled & stole two bases. Lauryn Barton & Bella Brant also had hits. Chase Toy walked twice, scored twice & stole 3 bases.

Sophie Maniscalco laid down another important sac bunt. Scoring in the game as well were Sami Gainor, Hanna Gaither, Rylie Troy, Jenna McClish,  Madalynn Workman & Mack Zumbar.

Bella Brant & Channing Toy each caught a game for Salem today & again did very well. Salem out stole today’s competition 12-4.

SALEM TAKES ONE FROM INDIANS IN DRAMATIC FASHION

SALEM OH- Rylie Troy entered the game to pitch in the second inning with the bases loaded & no outs. She would finish the inning allowing no runs. As clutch as that was she went the rest of the way in the circle & struck out the last two batters in the 9th with two on. This set up the bottom of the ninth heroics. Channing Toy led off the inning by failing to yield to an inside pitch & taking her base when it clipped her. She then stole second & with one out Rylie Troy didn’t budge as well and she got clunked. Both moved up on a passed ball. Girard decided to intentionally walk Chase Toy before Mack Zumbar delivered an infield walk off single for the win!

Mack had 3 hits in the game & 3 RBI. Lauryn Barton had two hits and scored twice. Channing Toy showed why she bats leadoff as she got on base in all five at bats with a single. She would score 3 times. Girard walked 6 batters in the game with the Toy sisters working their at bats with 3 walks each. Jenna McClish had a hit.

Lauryn Barton & Channing Toy each stole 2 bases. Salem stole 5 bases in the game. Bella Brant & Jenna McClish each put down sac bunts as Salem played some small ball & ran the bases aggressively.

It was the 7th win of the season for Rylie in the circle. With the win the Quakers have matched last sesson’s win total with a whole lot of softball left in the 2022 campaign.

SALEM REMAINS STANDING IN PITCHER’S DUEL

The 1hr 7 min game stood at 0-0 entering the 7th inning. Leading off in the top of the 7th for Salem was cleanup hitter Chase Toy. The game was a pitcher’s duel for the ages to that point. Chase battled to a full count as she saw a mix of changeups and pin point accuracy from senior Olivia Keller. Chase took the 3-2 pitch over the deepest part of the field for the game winning dinger.Salem’s ace hurler Rylie Troy took a no hitter into the 7th inning. She faced just one batter over the minimum to that point. In the game she struck out 8 while walking just one Beaver. To start the bottom of the 7th Keller dropped a base hit to right field. The #3 hitter Tori Druschel hit a shot to left center at the base of the fence. The ball was relayed in and threw behind the runner advancing past third base. Third basemen Bella Brant took the throw and rapidly threw home as Channing Toy applied the tag for the out. With a runner at 3rd and one out Rylie got the #4 hitter to pop out to Mack at first then struck out the #5 hitter with Channing Toy holding on to the fouled strike to end the game. Rylie is getting stronger as the season marches on.

Bella Brant, Mack Zumbar and Lauryn Barton each singled. Channing Toy doubled to left center in the 6th but was stranded. Lauryn Barton & Sophie Maniscalco each had a sac bunt. Not sure if there’s a full moon but Salem didn’t steal a base in a game.

In addition to her 8 strikeouts, Troy fielded 4 chances in the circle for outs including a difficult tapper down 1st base line. Lauryn Barton made a nice running catch in the right center gap. Channing Toy threw out a runner trying to advance on an overthrow.

Salem is now 6-9 on the season. Tomorrow they host Girard at 1pm & Struthers at 3pm. JV is at Girard tomorrow.
