DUKES SILENCE SALEM BATS

The Salem Lady Quakers welcomed undefeated EBC rival Marlington to town hoping to build off the momentum they gained after a close extra inning victory on Saturday.

Marlington quelled the Quaker momentum quickly en route to a 27-5 road victory. The Quaker bats picked right up early, Channing Toy led off with a triple coupled with a Dukes fielding error the Quakers raced out to an early 2-0 1st inning lead. Marlington answered with 8 runs in the top of the 2nd and never looked back.

The Quakers offensively were led by Rylie Troy going 2 for 3 and Mack Zumbar 1 for 3 including a double and 2 RBI.  Lauryn Barton also contributed a single, RBI, and 2 runs scored  in a losing effort.

Salem (2-3) looks to get back on track Wednesday hosting Akron Springfield.

SALEM WALKS IT OFF IN EXTRAS

SALEM OH-

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th and two outs, senior Rylie Troy came to bat. Rylie got the nickname “Soldi” back in her freshmen year because she was money when the game was on the line. Rylie wasted no time smacking the first pitch for an infield single to the 5-6 hole scoring Laila Murray for the game winner. The table was set for her walk off in the bottom of the 8th as pinch hitter Sami Ganior showed discipline in drawing a walk to start the inning. Laila Murray came in as pinch runner. After one out, Salem gambled in stealing Murray & it paid off as she slid around the tag into scoring position at second. Jenna McClish put down a sac bunt pushing Laila to third. That’s when Soldi – did her thing plating Laila…Game winner!

Troy wasn’t just money in the box, she pitched a complete game for the win. She struck out 6 Eagle hitters allowing 0 runs the last three innings. A tireless workhorse as she pitched in all 4 games during the week.

The Quakers scored the first run of the game when Mack Zumbar slammed a double to the gap in the bottom of the 2nd scoring Chase Toy. Mack (great hustle) scored the second run in the 5th after walking, she went to second on a passed ball, stole third then scored on another passed ball with an aggressive lead & reaction.

Chase Toy slammed an outside curve ball to right & stole a base. Lauryn Barton hit a single.

The Quakers played stellar defense making some big time plays. In the top of the 8th Jenna McClish came full stride from center field making a diving catch. Without that catch the game may have went 9 innings. Mack Zumbar made a diving catch on a hot liner to first. Lo Dawg caught a ball & fired to first for the double play ending any chance of a rally in the 6th.

Tori Firth struck out 14 for United & doubled. Salem is home Tuesday vs Marlington.

MCCLUTCH LEAVES HER MARK IN QUAKERTOWN

SALEM, OH- Taking a look back at the high school career of Salem’s Jenna McClish- you’ll find many things she did along the way.  You’ll also find one thing she never did- and that was leave anything in the tank at the end of a game.

McClish learned, along with many of her teammates, that each player on the roster had their role.  Some were pure scorers, playmakers, defenders, rebounders, and then there was Jenna- who never found herself to be a “color inside the lines” type player, so she took everything everybody else was, added a scoop of hustle, a dash of attitude, and a whole lot of heart- tossed it in a blender, and slapped a number 12 on it, and out came the 2022 YSN Sixth Woman of the Year for Girls Basketball.

We sat down with the First Lady of “McClutch Manor” on the Campus of Salem High School for a little after-season therapy and to discuss what the last time might feel like wearing the Quaker jersey one last time.

SALEM BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MIKE DEBARR

SALEM OH- Who is ready for some Quaker Baseball!? The entire community of Salem might just go insane counting down the days till first pitch!  For Coach Michael DeBarr, the regular season will be a huge key for Salem to repeat the success they tasted a year ago.  The Eastern Buckeye Conference provides plenty of challenges for The Quakers to face this season, but the strength of their non-conference schedule will open some eyes.   Their opening game? A rematch of last year’s Regional Semi-Final against another powerhouse in Gary Knittle’s Canfield Cardinals.

Of course, Ohio’s weather pattern might have different plans for us; however, East Liverpool, Howland and Ursuline all make an appearance on Salem’s schedule.   They have confidence, they have swagger and they are not afraid to let you know it! Do not miss this interview Anthony and Ty had with Coach DeBarr!

MCCLISH WINS 2022 YSN 6TH WOMAN OF THE YEAR

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Salem’s Jenna McClish has been named 2022 Your Sports Network “Sixth Woman of the Year” by the media company.

Jenna “McClutch” as she’s known in Quakertown spent her entire senior season setting the example on and off the floor, no matter if she was in the starting lineup, or not.  McClish took a staggering 8 charges on the season, while diving all over the floor on loose basketballs, accepting matchups that she was overmatched by size-but never in heart.  Whether it was helping pick up a teammate, or helping knock down free throws in clutch situations, Coach Sarah Hamilton could always count on McClish to step up.

McClish helped lead her team to the OHSAA Regional Championship where the Quakers fell just short of Norton.  The Lady Quakers finished 20-5 on the season, and multiple times throughout the year were atop the Power Rankings on YSN.  Jenna will also be featured in the YSN All-Star Game on March 26th at South Range High School.

Congratulations to Salem’s Jenna McClish on a successful career at Salem, and for being selected as this year’s 2022 YSN 6th Woman of the Year.

SALEM SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MICHAEL THORPE

SALEM OH- It was a tremendous winter season for the women of Salem. Their basketball team got further than any other under the YSN umbrella. They feel three wins shy of a state championship, but a lot they proved that there is a standard of success at Salem. Now the softball team will try to uphold that standard. The Quakers are bringing a lot back from last season, and look forward be just as competitive in a brutal EBC. Everything is pointing to positive vibes for the Quakers in the spring, but they’ll need the communities support behind them.

Head coach Michael Thorpe was able to come on Running Point this week. He talks with Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about the tough league they play in, what the Quaker’s biggest strength might be, and so much more. Find out all you need to know before the season starts in Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Michael Thorpe.

THE LEGEND OF SWATZILLA

SALEM OH- Salem is just one step away from a trip to Dayton, and the state tournament. So close they can smell it. One more obstacle stands in their way, and that is a Norton team that took down the Quakers crosstown rivals West Branch in the previous round. With the game swiftly approaching, let’s take some time to tell you about the legend of Kami Rohm, better known at YSN as Swatzilla .

Kami is the backbone of what has been a truly suffocating defense this season. The Quakers broke their program’s record for scoring defense in a regular season by just allowing 31.8 points per game. The ball pressure and traps from their guards are hard enough to deal with, but if you are fortunate enough to get by them, the Quakers have a watchful eye in the paint. Kami Rohm has had more big-time blocks this season than a lot of girls who are even taller than her. Her timing, body discipline, and footwork make up for the fact that she’s not going to tower over you. Make no mistake, getting a shot up over Swatzilla might be the hardest challenge that this defense presents.

Rohm is known for her defense, but that doesn’t mean her offense doesn’t have merit. Just like the defensive side of the ball, on offense Kami uses her athleticism and instincts to make up for not being the tallest person out there. If you put your tall post on her, she has the ability to take her to the perimeter, she can beat a defender off the dribble, she can also shoot from anywhere. This makes Rohm a lethal addition to a Salem team that seems destined for glory.

Kami took the time to come on YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about this season with the Quakers. She talks to Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about the team chemistry this season, her role models that make it easier, and much more. Hopefully, you are making the trip to Barberton, on your way there, make sure you know about the legend of Swatzilla. Check out this exclusive Salem Girls Basketball player profile.

LADY QUAKERS LEAVE NORTHWEST IN THEIR WAKE

BARBERTON, OH- The Salem Girls Basketball Team has a favor to ask:

Keep doubting what they can do.

After a season full of proving naysayers wrong, and handing out crow like it’s a lunch special, the Lady Quakers are one game away from the Final Four after a 33-26 victory over Canal Fulton Northwest on Tuesday night.

Kami Rohm led the Lady Quakers in the points column with 11 points and seemingly as many blocks- while Alivia Davidson-Chuck drilled three clutch buckets from beyond the arc to give her nine points on the night.  Abbie Davidson sliced through the Lady Indian defense like a hot knife through butter on her way to a sneaky seven points in the victory.

Salem now stands tall at 20-4 on the season, and will now face Norton who knocked out West Branch just prior to the Salem contest.  The game is currently scheduled for Friday night at 7 pm with a trip to Dayton on the line.
