CAMDEN SAMPSON; DEFENSIVE DYNAMO

SALEM OH- Salem High School’s senior soccer standout, Camden Sampson, holds a pivotal role as a captain and versatile player on the field. Operating in the midfield and defender positions, Sampson’s impact is felt throughout the team’s dynamics and performance.

Renowned for his exceptional defensive prowess, Sampson played a crucial role in anchoring the Salem defense during the previous season. His efforts contributed significantly to the team’s impressive record, with a defense that yielded merely one goal per game and secured five shutouts. Sampson’s commitment to the backline demonstrates his understanding of the importance of resilience and teamwork in achieving collective success.

What truly fuels Sampson’s passion for the game is the sense of unity and coordination on defense. His favorite aspect of the team revolves around the synchronicity achieved while defending together, exemplifying his dedication to a cohesive defensive strategy that leaves opponents struggling to breach the backline.

Beyond the soccer field, Sampson showcases his talents on Salem’s basketball team, further underscoring his athleticism and versatility as a multi-sport athlete.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary Kobe Bryant, Sampson channels the competitive spirit and unwavering drive that Bryant embodied. This attitude shines through in his gameplay, and Sampson strives to carry this fierce determination into all aspects of his life.

In the current season, Salem’s remarkable performance owes much to Sampson’s defensive leadership. Despite facing challenges, the team has only suffered a single loss by a margin greater than one goal. Sampson’s influence on the field and within the team environment is undeniable.

As his high school journey draws to a close, Sampson’s aspirations continue to grow. Eager to extend his athletic career, he aims to take his skills to the college level, where his defensive prowess and leadership qualities are sure to make a significant impact once again.

Camden took the time to have a chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig. They discuss personal goals he set his senior season. What kind of a leader he is, and much more. Check out the latest Salem Soccer Player Profile only on YSN!

BEAVERS AVOID A LOSING STREAK

By Jarrod Niederhiser

SALEM OH- After being held scoreless in the 1st half for the second consecutive week, the Salem Quaker offense shows signs of life in the 2nd to the tune of 20 points, but in the end it wasn’t enough to overcome the offensive output of Austin Cline and the Beaver Local Beavers (1-1), who overtook Salem early on en route to a 41-20 victory.

Cline was a one man wrecking crew, accounting for over 300 yards of total offense (190 rushing, 122 passing) and three total scores. He did get help from his skill position teammates, namely Brock Severs and Tyler Prideau, who each helped balance out the run and passing attack of the Beavers on the night. Severs contributed 57 yards and a score on the ground, and another 114 yards and a score through the air, while Prideau ran hard all night to the tune of 10 carries for close to 70 hard-earned yards.
For Salem (0-2), Sophomore QB Cletis Monroy had his 1st 100 yard game of his young career, both on the ground and through the air. Monroy finished his night with 120 yards rushing with 2 scores, to go along with 132 yards through the air and a score (47 yards to Marcus Phillips). Phillips finished with over 100 yards of total offense (52 rushing, 57 receiving) and a score.
Salem will travel to East Liverpool next week to take on the Potters in the 99th meeting between the two Columbiana County schools, while Beaver Local will play host to Jefferson Area.

BULLDOGS BREAK OFF THE CHAINS IN SEASON OPENER

By Jerrod Niederhiser

POLAND OH- Salem was looking to start off the new season in a good way, but after a promising first drive of the season, it was all Poland, en route to a 38-6 victory in week one. The Quakers entered the 2023 campaign with a lot of new faces in key spots, after the graduation of record-setting signal caller Jackson Johnson, as well as weapons and key contributors on both sides of the ball, and the newcomers experienced some to be expected growing pains at the hands of the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless 11 minutes and 59 seconds in the 1st quarter, Dom Pagano got the Bulldogs on the board and got into the endzone from one yard out to make it 7-0 (XP by Stefancin was good) Poland. Pagano would add another TD run, this time of 11 yards, in the 2nd to make it 14-0. After a 24 yd FG by Stefancin, Danny Nittoli would punch in a 4 yard run to end the half at 24-0 in favor of Poland.
Any hopes of Salem getting back into the game were quickly dashed on the opening kickoff of the 2nd half when Cole Fulton returned the kick 88 yards to the house to give Poland a 31-0, and initiate the running clock. He (Fulton) would add another TD run to finish off the scoring for Poland on the night, making it 38-0 after three.
Salem’s lone score would come at the 8:32 mark of the 4th, with Cletis Monroy punching it in from 1 yard out (XP blocked) making it a 38-6 game, which is where it would end up.
On the night, Poland’s rushing attack was led by Cole Fulton (9-106), Pagano (6-27) and Nittoli (8-30). For Salem, Monroy had 29 yards on the ground and another 48 through the air (1 INT), while Marcus Phillps had 14 carries for 50 yards.
Salem returns to action next week at home vs. Beaver Local, while Poland travels to Howland.

LATE RALLY EXTENDS SALEM’S SEASON

STREETSBORO OH- Salem used a late inning rally to topple Streetsboro on the road in the sectional semifinals on Monday 5-4.  The Quakers scored three runs in the final two innings.

Jackson Johnson was the only Quaker with multiple hits as he went 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored.  Caden Swiger didn’t get a hit, but it was his huge sac fly in the 7th that gave the Quakers their final edge.

Carson Rhodes threw a two hitter for Salem in 6 innings pitched.  He struck out ten hitters and gave up just 1 earned run.  Gavin Wilms came on in the seventh to grab the save for Salem. He struck out two of the three hitters he faced.

Salem advances into the sectional final where they’ll meet up with EBC rival West Branch with a trip to districts on the line.  That game will be Wednesday at 5:00 at West Branch.

CHASING DOWN THE RECORD BOOKS

SALEM OH- A big misconception about the sport of softball is that anyone who is fast will make a great baserunner.  While it’s true speed is a big advantage, a baserunner must also have high softball IQ to know when to break for the next base, and when to pull on the reigns.  For Salem senior Chase Toy, base running has become second nature.  Toy is arguably one of the best Quakers on the base paths that the program has seen. She has spent her career working on her craft, and now that work is paying off. Toy has been running down records all season long. When it comes to stealing there aren’t too many players who are better.

Toy has both the single season and career base stealing record at Salem.  This season she has stole 31 bases and she has only been caught once.  Toy is also trying to grab the program batting average record for a season.  Obviously you have to get on base to steal bases.  Toy is more proficient at getting on base than anyone that has come through the halls of Salem.  The team captain also maintains fantastic leadership that keeps the dugout feeling like a family.

Chase slowed down for a minute to talk to YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her career at Salem. Toy talks about her commitment to the craft, her future plans as a business owner, and much more. Check out this exclusive Salem Softball Player Profile exclusively on YSN!
