SALEM GETS CLIPPED BY DUKES

SALEM, OHIO- The Salem Quakers watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 10-3 loss to Marlington on Wednesday.

The Quakers struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Marlington, giving up ten runs.

Marlington got on the board in the first inning when Wyatt Dillon’s sac fly scored one then Marlington scored three runs in the third inning. The Dukes big inning was driven by a single by Carter DiFloure and an error on a ball put in play by Dylan Heatherington.

DiFloure earned the win for Marlington as the fireballer went seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three.

Gavin Wilms led the Quakers with two hits in three at bats. Carson Rhodes took the loss for the Quakers as he surrendered six runs on six hits over four innings, striking out five.

TOY BREAKS STOLEN BASE RECORD IN SALEM WIN

MINERVA OH- In the bottom of the 6th inning with one out Channing Toy was hit by a pitch. She stole second & then Lauryn Barton laid down a sac bunt & darn near beat it out. Chase Toy delivered an rbi single plating her sister from third for a key insurance run. Chase stole second on the first pitch giving her 26 on the season. Two pitches later she swiped third base breaking the single season stolen base record held by Reagan Meals. Chase has now stolen 27 bases this season. Congrats to the stolen base Queen – you are one heck of an athlete!

Despite 5 Salem hits in the game they were still able to steal 9 bases in 9 attempts. Each of Salem’s four runs they scored, stole a base on their eventual way to the plate. In contrast the Lions didn’t steal any bases & were caught stealing in both attempts. Other thief’s included Lauryn Barton (2), Mack Zumbar (2), Channing Toy & Emilee Lewis.

Lauryn Barton had a bunt single & scored two of the 4 Salem runs. Such impressive hustle when with two outs Mack Zumbar blooped a single over the 1st baseman’s head & Lauryn took off from second  without hesitation & scored. Mack also doubled in the game with 2 RBI. Chase Toy had two hits & walked. Mack Zumbar & Chase Toy extended their hitting streaks to 10 games. Sophie Maniscalco had an RBI. Kaylee Johnson had a sac bunt as Bella Brant reached base twice including getting hit by a pitch, a stat she leads in annually. Sareny Wang scored a run as a pinch runner.

Morgane Blaine pitched a complete game to pickup the win. She struck out six while walking just two on 99 total pitches. She carried a shutout into the 7th when the Lions attempted to rally before Ice Ice Blainey shut the door making all three outs. She struck out two in the inning & tagged out a runner caught in a “pickle” trying to steal.

Catcher Channing Toy was on point throwing out two runners trying to steal thwarting any comeback. Morgane Blaine assisted in 5 outs defensively including a double play on a line drive back to her in the circle. Mack Zumbar made an amazing diving catch on a line drive towards the 3-4 hole in the 5th inning.

Tomorrow is senior night vs Beaver Local at Southeast.

SALEM SECURES FIRST WIN

SALEM OH- What an evening in the circle for the freshman duo of Emilee “Fireball” Lewis & Morgane “Mo-Ice” Blaine. Together they combined on a 1 hitter with 16 ks. The 16 strikeouts in a game tie (Taylor Thorpe) for the second most in Salem Softball history behind Shannon Leininger’s 17 in 1996. Emilee Lewis struck out that the final six batters she faced as her dugout got louder with every pitch. Morgane struck our 6 of the 8 batters she faced.

Despite only 5 outs to make defensively, there were still some highlight reel plays. Chase Toy took a chopper up the middle, played it well for the 6-3 out. Channing Toy three out a runner leading off third in the first inning that kept a run off the scoreboard. Freshman Paige Menough saved extra bases on a running catch in right field.

For Lisbon Kamryn Perchutti had the lone hit. Kyrstin Reckner, Marah Housheolder, Abby Ammon & Emma Everett reached base.

The Quakes offense was paced by Chase Toy as she scored 4 runs on the evening. She went 2-3 with two walks. Her speed was on display as she swiped three bases giving her 14 on the season. She is now just 10 shy of tying the single season record (24 Reagan Meals) for stolen bases & 9 short of tying the career record held by Tara Mancuso 1991-1994.

Mack Zumbar had two hits including a double. Bella Brant had a clutch two out-two rbi single in the 1st inning & added another rbi hit later. Channing Toy added two hits & two stolen bases from her leadoff position. Lauryn Barton & Emilee Lewis each had a hit. Barton stole 3 bases. Sophie Maniscalco drilled a triple to left center. In all the Quakes banged out 11 hits & stole 11 bases. Kassidy Swanson (freshman) scored the final Insurance run in the 7th inning.

Tomorrow Salem heads to Akron-Springfield (9-2) for a doubleheader 11am & 1pm.

By Matt Morrison

SALEM, OHIO- As many teams in our area were taking the time do dodge raindrops, Salem took an opportunity to grab momentum. They welcomed in a hot Mineral Ridge team for a non conference matchup.  It was all Salem in this one as they ran away 20-1 keeping their own bats hot, and silencing the Rams offense.

Salem was hot right out of the gate as they scored 18 runs in the first two innings of play. DAVIDSON DAWNS 2023 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SALEM OH – As basketball season has seen its end, there have been countless remarkable team and individual performances. The name of the game of basketball is being able to put the ball through the hoop more than the other team can. Some teams and players do it better and more often than others. During the 2023 season, the Salem Quakers averaged close to 50 points per game, a season in which they went 22-3. A huge part in the Quakers success as a team, particularly on the offensive end of the floor, was the play of senior point guard Abbie Davidson.

Point guards are viewed as the quarterback of basketball, the floor general, the one who gets their teammates involved and the player who has the most opportunities to score the ball. Davidson did just that as she averaged 15 points per game, 3 assists, and led the Quakers with a 45% field goal percentage and shot 75% from the free throw line. Her leadership on the floor was also a factor in winning this honor.  Salem was just plain different with Abbie on the floor.  In the few close games Salem had to play this season, Abbie has come up huge on the stat book.  Even in their final game against Canfield, Abbie did all she could scoring 16 points in the Quakers loss.

Everyone at YSN would like to congratulate Abbie on an outstanding season leading the Salem offense to the year it had. It is with our pleasure to announce that Abbie is our recipient of the 2023 YSN Offensive Player of the Year.

ROHM DOMINATES HER WAY TO 2023 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SALEM OH- Everybody loves offense. It puts people in the seats. But any good coach will tell you that defense wins the biggest games on the biggest stages. The Salem girls used defense as their backbone. The Quakers allowed less than 30 points per game to their opponents. One of the biggest reasons for their stout defense was their giant rim protector Kami Rohm.  A quick look at a Salem basketball game and you’ll find out quickly why Kami was branded the nickname Swatzilla.  You’ll have trouble finding anyone in the YSN family with more blocks.  Kami doesn’t just rely on her height to get to the ball, she has put tons of work in at the craft and technique of shot blocking, and it is masterful to watch.

We want to congratulate Kami on one of the best defensive seasons we’ve seen. We are honored to announce that Kami is the 2023 recipient of the YSN Defensive Player of the Year.

CANFIELD CAN CELEBRATE BEING ATOP THE DISTRICT

STREETSBORO OH- Canfield was voted the number one seed in the district before the brackets came out. But everyone in the program knew the real way to earn that top seed was to win the district.  When the road to the championship was put in front of them, it was clear the path wasn’t going to be easy. Reigning district champions Salem, and the two seed in the district elected to go right at Canfield rather than have their own district where they’d be the top seed.  That decision got every basketball fan excited before sectionals even began. It all came down to Saturday in Streetsboro as the two teams met in the highly anticipated district championship.  The Cardinals found themselves in a back and forth defensive grudge match that ended in victory.  The 32-26 win gave the Cardinals their first district championship since 2013.

The tempo of this game went pretty much how you’d expect from two teams that play such great defense. It took several minutes for the first points to even be put on the board. Kate Sahli finally broke the ice with a three 2 minutes in. Canfield was the first team to swing a punch.  They broke out to a 18-10 lead, and took it in the locker room.  Salem was not without a counterpunch though. They came out of halftime and went on an 11-1 run to take a 21-19 lead in the third quarter.  From that point on though, Canfield’s defense locked down.  The Quakers only scored 5 points the rest of the way.  While Canfield’s offense didn’t have much more success, the 13 points they scored the rest of the game was enough.

Jenna Triveri was the Cardinal that stepped up the biggest in this one.  She led the way for Canfield with 11 points. Sahli was able to tack on 8 points for the Cardinals as well.

Abbie Davidson gave all she could for Salem as the standout scored a game-high 16 points.  Rylee Hutton was able to add 5 points for the Quakers who end the season at 22-3.

Canfield has won 17 straight games, and they’ll have a chance to extend that streak on Tuesday as they travel to Barberton for the regional semifinals.  They are matched up with third seeded Marlington at 6:00. The Cardinals beat Marlington by 1 point in the regular season.

SALEM GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH SARAH HAMILTON-PHILLIPS

SALEM OH- If you are shocked that we’ve come to the district championships, and we are still talking about sale, you shouldn’t be.  The Quakers are in the middle of a window of unprecedented dominance.  After getting to the regional finals last season, the Quakers are hungry to get back, and take the next step this time.  However now is no time to look ahead for Salem. Standing in front of them is Canfield, who has had a pretty solid season themselves.  Two teams ranked in the top 10 in the state RPI go at it in Streetsboro on Saturday.

Sarah Hamilton-Phillips took the time to do an interview with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig ahead of their district championship.  They break down Salem’s last win, the family atmosphere in the program, and so much more. Check out the latest episode of Coach’s Corner with Sarah Hamilton-Phillips only on YSN!
