WILLIAMS DOES IT ALL

BERLIN CENTER, OH- Senior shooting guard and defensive specialist, Kaleigh Williams, opened up about her journey with the Western Reserve basketball team. The podcast, hosted by DJ Yokley, provided insight into Williams’ dedication to the sport and her aspirations for the future.

Williams discussed her triumphant return to the court following a challenging junior season plagued by a quad injury. Expressing her commitment to the team, she expressed her desire to leave a lasting legacy as the toughest defensive player in Western Reserve history.

Uniquely, Williams’ passion for basketball extends beyond the court, reflecting her dedication to the Western Reserve community and her involvement in softball, track, and cross country. She emphasized the importance of the tight-knit bond shared among her fellow teammates.

Beyond her athletic prowess, Williams’ future aspirations were also explored. She spoke of her dedication to animal science and her involvement in the Biomed program at the career center. With a comprehensive vision for her future, Williams demonstrated a deep connection to her roots, stemming from her upbringing on a farm and her involvement in 4H.

Throughout the interview, Williams credited her strong support system, including her parents and Coach Miller, for instilling values of dedication and hard work, both on and off the court. Her unwavering commitment to her sport, studies, and community solidified her status as an ideal role model for her peers and the younger generation.

CANFIELD, OH- Madison Dado, a senior at South Range High School, was the guest on the YSN podcast’s South Range Raider show. Madi was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in both volleyball and softball.

Deangelos asked Madi about her responsibilities on the volleyball team, and she explained that she played different positions each year. She had gained a strong understanding of the middle position after playing it for two years, and she also played in the back row.

When it came to training for both sports, Madi mentioned that she consistently went to Troy Parks throughout each season. She focused on the specific sport she was playing at the time, giving her full attention to the current season.

Deangelos then mentioned Madi’s impressive abilities on the softball field, particularly her powerful throws. He noted that in both volleyball and softball, speed played a significant role. Madi explained that while she was in control as a center fielder in softball, playing volleyball required a different level of communication and understanding with her teammate, Anna Troy.

The conversation shifted to Madi’s role in guiding Anna, a freshman on the team. Madi credited Anna’s natural talent and ability to assimilate into the team seamlessly. Madi herself had received guidance from Reagan, a teammate who helped her navigate the back row position.

Her recent successful run with the team, having faced tough opponents has been impressive. The busy schedule allowed little time to relax, as they had to quickly shift focus to the next opponent. Madi also mentioned how she managed to balance her time during homecoming week, thanks to a day off provided by Coach Irons.

As the conversation moved toward Madi’s future goals, she expressed her desire to continue playing a sport at the collegiate level. She explained that her passion for the sport and the relationships she built through it were driving factors. However, she also shared her aspiration to become a physician’s assistant after college, inspired by her love for the show Grey’s Anatomy and her family’s background in healthcare.

Madi spoke fondly of her family, acknowledging the sacrifices they made to support her and her sisters’ sporting endeavors. Her parents, a nurse and a police officer, served as role models, always encouraging her to pursue her dreams.

Before wrapping up, Madi gushed about her excitement for a trip to Myrtle Beach. and expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming experience.

BOARDMAN ADVANCES PAST SOUTH RANGE

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman 10u won big over South Range 14-2 on Wednesday.

Boardman 10u got things moving in the first inning, when Julia Putko singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run.

Boardman notched seven runs in the fifth inning. Gabrielle Price, Julia Putko, Rylynne Scriber, and Sylvie Chmielewski each had RBIs in the big inning.

Rylynne Scriber earned the victory on the rubber for Boardman. The bulldog went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out 11 and walking one.

Riley Slagle was in the pitcher’s circle for South Range. The righty allowed 18 hits and 14 runs over five innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Boardman 10u District 2023 totaled 18 hits. Putko, Price, Mia Davies, and Kaylee Hughes each had multiple hits for Boardman. Mia Davies, Gabrielle Price, and Julia Putko each collected three hits to lead Boardman. Boardman didn’t commit a single error in the field. Gabrielle Price had 12 chances in the field, the most on the team.

AUSTINTOWN SCOOTS PAST STRUTHERS IN DISTRICT PLAY

BOARDMAN, OH- The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, or in this case, the Falcons don’t flock far from the nest- as the 10U Austintown Softball All-Stars handled Struthers in four innings by the score of 13-0.

Austintown would get on the board in the first with a three-run frame, followed by a one-run second inning, five-run third, and four-run fourth inning to cap things off.

Offensively, Addy Weidenthal went 2-3 and scored twice from the leadoff spot while Peyton Severn, Addison Figley, Ava Panamarczuk, and Julia Jourdan all collected multiple hits during the contest as well.

Weidenthal would start in the circle for A-Town, and get the victory, while Severn came out of the bullpen to cage the Lady Wildcats the rest of the way.

For Struthers, Noelle Dubos, Nadia Haus, Grace Farina, and Callie Sodeman all reached base during the game.

Struthers will be back in action this Sunday at 10am, while Austintown gets a rest until Monday at 6pm.  Both games will be on YSN.

2023 YSN SOFTBALL ALL-STAR GAME ROSTERS RELEASED

EAST PALESTINE, OH- It’s once again time for the annual exclamation point and the end of an incredible sports school year, and that can only mean one thing: The YSN Softball All-Star Game.

Some of the area’s brightest stars will shine again at Youngstown State University on Wednesday evening at 7pm to showcase their talents and signature smiles.  Registration begins at 5pm, with the first pitch slated shortly after 7.

Leading the Stars will be the State Champion Coach from Division 1, Austintown Fitch, Steve Ward.  For the Stripes, it will be one of the area’s winningest coaches over the past decade, South Range’s Jeff DeRose.

Both teams are loaded with talent, and the game promises to be another great event, and an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Fellowship of Christian Athletes – Steel Valley, while promoting the sport of softball.

Throwing out this year’s first pitch will be recent South Range graduate, Jamie Feren.  Feren was a member of the Raider Softball Team all four years, and during a game late in the season her senior campaign suffered a broken leg that ended her season, and essentially her career.  Feren was selected to the All-YSN Team in 2023 for her work at second base.

REMINISCE WITH MADI BEAUDIS

AUSTINTOWN OH- When referencing The Austintown-Fitch Falcons Softball Club, players from The Falcons past and present alike will all speak on the family-like atmosphere that has been created, forged by lifelong friendships and sustained through students. Madi Beaudis is one of those students that have continued the culture of Fitch Softball. 

If you have been to a Falcons game this year, you may have noticed Madi stationed out in right field. However if you do not remember ol number 18 in the outfield then surely you have heard her! When talking about the ingredients needed to make the correct culture at Austintown, one key component is “the dugout voice” that has a sole job of motivating her team while subsequently annoying the opponent. Kayla Schubert was the voice last year, known for her unique cheers and chants for the players; however, with Schubert senioring out following last season, a new voice was needed. Madi Beaudis became that voice!

Always involved with the sport since a young age, Beaudis quickly fell in love with the team atmosphere that the sport creates while also forming friendships with many of her current teammates a decade ago! Having a taste of success in her high school career, Beaudis has been a part of three straight All-American Conference Championships as well as having two District Championships under her belt!

Realizing this is her last dance on the diamond this campaign, Beaudis has aspirations of staying local and attending Youngstown State University to continue her academic career! Filled with moments, memories and more! There is no doubt you will want to catch this edition of Player Profile as Ty Bartell sits down with Fitch senior Madi Beaudis.

SPECIAL DELIVERY; BARTELS PROPELS RANGE TO REGIONALS

CANFIELD, OH- South Range took their game in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off single at the end of the game to topple Poland’s incredible effort at a District crown. The game was tied at five with the  Raiders batting in the bottom of the seventh when Gretchen Bartels singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.

South Range earned the victory despite allowing Poland to score three runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs’ big inning was driven by home runs by Mary Brant and Katie McDonald.

Poland’s back-to-back jacks from Brant and McDonald held strong until the dynamic duo of Juli Stachowicz and Anna Aey delivered home runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Juli Stachowicz was the winning pitcher for South Range Varsity Raiders. The lefthander allowed six hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one.  J-Stach also registered her 300th career strikeout during the contest.

Katie McDonald took the tough luck loss for Poland. The pitcher went six and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits, striking out nine and walking one.

South Range tallied 11 hits in the game. Madison Dado, Stachowicz, and Keira Brogan all had multiple hits for South Range Varsity Raiders. Dado led South Range Varsity Raiders with three hits in four at-bats.

Brant went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Poland in hits.

South Range will now battle Triway on Wednesday in Canton in the Regional Semi-Final at 5pm.

COUSINS COLLIDE; STACHOWICZ AND AEY LEAD THE CHARGE PAST PV

CANFIELD, OH- Juli Stachowicz threw a shutout and whiffed 14 out of 15 outs collected to lead South Range past Pymatuning Valley Lakers 17-0 on Tuesday.

Stachowicz led the Raiders to victory by driving in six runs. Stachowicz went 2-for-2 at the plate. Stachowicz drove in runs on a home run in the first, a double in the second, a walk in the third, and a in the fourth.  Her cousin, freshman outfielder, Anna Aey went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, and a single with two RBI, and two runs scored.

South Range got things moving in the first inning, when Samantha Susany singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.  The Raiders tallied seven runs in the fourth inning. Ashley Rupert, Susany, Stachowicz, Solena DeJesus, and Jayli Wilt all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

A single by Rieane Zajac in the fourth inning was a positive for Pymatuning Valley.

Stachowicz earned the win for South Range. The lefthander surrendered zero runs on one hit over five innings, striking out 14 and walking one.

Baleigh Alderman toed the rubber for Pymatuning Valley. The pitcher allowed ten hits and nine runs over two innings, walking one. Saige Payne threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

South Range racked up 16 hits on the day. Aey, Keira Brogan, Kelly Szolek, Stachowicz, Madison Dado, and Wilt all managed multiple hits for the Raiders. Brogan and Aey each collected three hits to lead the victors.

Zajac went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Pymatuning Valley in hits.

With the win, South Range will enter into a third meeting with Poland for the District Title on Thursday at 5pm.

WARRIORS FINISH SEASON WITH BIG WIN OVER RIVAL FOR OUTRIGHT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

East Palestine, OH- The Edgewood Warriors softball team bested their cross-town rival Lakeside Dragons in a high-scoring affair, 15-12 to put a bow on a successful season. Edgewood got on the board in the first inning.  Mckenna Vencill hit a solo homer. The Warriors notched six runs in the second inning.  The offensive foray by Edgewood was led by Mackaylee Overly, Brianna Melaragno, Kailey Rantanen, Victoria Skaruppa, and Sophia Sophia Paolillo, all driving in runs in the inning. Lakeside had fire power of their own scoring five runs in the seventh inning.  Adalena Torino, Sophia Matrisciano, Mariah Gildersleeve, and Lucie Cole all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.  Lucianna Paolillo earned the win for the Warriors. Paolillo surrendered zero runs on one hit over two and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one.  Juliaunna Gregory and Vencill entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Emily Mohney took the loss for Lakeside. The Dragons pitcher lasted six innings, allowing 18 hits and 15 runs while striking out one. Edgewood totaled 18 hits in the game including a Mckenna Vencill’s four bag blast in the first inning.  Rantanen, Avary Toth, Overly, Skaruppa, Lucianna Paolillo, and Vencill all had multiple hits for Edgewood.  Overly, Toth, and Rantanen each collected three hits to lead the Warriors.  Edgewood didn’t commit a single error in the field. Toth had ten chances in the field, the most on the team. Sophia Matrisciano led Lakeside with two hits in four at bats.

SMOOTH SAILING FOR THE LADY LAKERS CONTINUES

East Palestine, OH- The Pymatuning Valley Lakers triumphed over the Crestwood Red Devils 14-4 on Monday. The Crestwood Red Devils fired up the offense in the second inning, when an error scored one run for the Red Devils. Pymatuning Valley pulled away for good with six runs in the third inning.  In the third Nataleigh Haines hit a solo homer, Saige Payne singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run, Mariah Sharpe doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run, Baleigh Alderman singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, and Kylie Luke singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs. The lady Lakers tallied six runs in the fifth inning.  Pymatuning Valley’s big bats were led by Haines, Rieane Zajac, Payne, Alderman, and Brooke Gray, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Alderman led the Lakers to victory in the circle. The Laker ace surrendered two runs on one hit over three innings, striking out four and walking one.  Payne threw four innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Hunter was on the rubber for Crestwood surrendering six runs on six hits over three innings, striking out four and walking one. Mia Gullatta threw four innings in relief. Pymatuning Valley cranked out two home runs on the day. Haines hit a bomb in the third inning. Alderman had a homer in the seventh inning. Pymatuning Valley racked up 14 hits in the game.  Haines, Alderman, Payne, Luke, and Zajac each managed multiple hits for the Lakers.  Haines went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Pymatuning Valley in hits. Helm led Crestwood with two hits in three at bats. The Lakers will face off against the red hot 1 seeded South Range Raiders Tuesday in Canfield for the district championship.
