RACH, PAPER, SCISSORS: RANGE CHOOSES RACH

CANFIELD, OH- The list of South Range Football Head Coaches just received another gold star for their program on Wednesday night.  After board approval, David Rach has been chosen to take over the whistle for the Raider Football Program.

Rach served as the Defensive Coordinator for the State Championship squad, as well as in years prior, and is a 2007 graduate of South Range, and is regarded highly as one of the program’s elite players in the five decades of existence.

“I am so thankful to the South Range administration and board of education for awarding me the opportunity to lead the South Range Football program moving forward,” said David Rach. “My family and I would also like to thank Coach, Kelli, and the entire Yeagley family for all of their love, support, guidance, and friendship over the years and throughout this transition,” Rach added.

Dan Yeagley, who retired from the position just a month ago speaks highly of his former player and coach who now takes the torch for the burgundy and gold, “Dave is a great leader and coach, and an even better young man.  He really cares about the players and he has been a huge part of our success over the years.  He and his family have been very supportive of South Range, and I am looking forward to watching the program grow under his leadership.”

Rach will take over the Raiders coming off of a State Championship in Division V, but will have his hands full in replacing 20 seniors from the class.  It is expected that South Range will also keep the majority, if not all of the coaching staff intact for the upcoming season.

The first-year coach undoubtedly seems excited about representing the next generation of Raider Coaches, “Thank you to the players, parents, coaching staff, and entire ‘Raider Family’ for inspiring me, believing in me, and trusting me. I am humbled, proud, and so excited to be your coach. Go Raiders!”

South Range opens up their 2023 campaign against the Springfield Tigers in August.

SOUTH RANGE SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JEFF DEROSE

CANFIELD OH- South Range has been one of the most dominant softball programs over the last 12 seasons. They’ve only missed 4 regional tournaments in that stretch. Last season they added another district trophy to their case, and now they return a ton of the talent that got them there. If you thought you were done dealing with South Range, we have some bad news for you.  The Raiders look to make a run at their third state championship appearance since 2016.

Head coach Jeff DeRose has been a part of the program for this entire run. He returns for another year on the first base line coaching his Raiders to victory. He had the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to preview this softball season in South Range. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Jeff DeRose.

IRONS STEPS IN AND EARNS 2023 COACH OF THE YEAR

CANFIELD, OHIO – Any basketball aficionado will tell you that talent will take you far, but a great head coach will finish the deal off. The ability to lead a group of players, getting the full potential out of each individual, and also showing the guys how to be men is everything you want out of your head man. After South Range started the season 0-5, Todd Irons took over the reins and led the team through their adverse start. Under the direction of Irons, the Raiders went 15-5 the rest of the way where their season ended to Lutheran East in the Division III District Final.

Although the Raiders had hopes of going further in the tournament, the team has much to be proud of considering the run they went on to turn things around after the rocky start. We at YSN would like to take this opportunity to congratulate coach Irons as we have selected him as our 2023 Coach of the Year recipient.

RAIDERS NOT ENOUGH TO STOP LUTHERAN EAST

WARREN, OHIO- South Range ran into a road block in the district championship as their amazing season came to an end as they fell to Lutheran East 69-45.

The man leading the way for the Raiders was Luke Rohan, who finished the night with a strong 21 point performance. Lutheran East exploded right away as they were led by Cody Head, who dropped 29 points, and TJ Crumble, who added another 14 points.

Lutheran East will now move on to the regional semi finals to take on Lake Catholic this Wednesday night a 8pm.

LEWIS SEES THE BIG PICTURE

CANFIELD OH- To be a top level basketball team, you gotta have a good point guard. You might see a team win a couple games, or go on a run without a true point guard, but you’ll never see consistent success without it. The point guard holds the ball more than anyone.  They get everyone where they need to be.  The best point guards are also an extra coach on the floor, which means they have to be coachable themselves.  South Range has found a real one, and they wouldn’t have turned their season around the way they did without him.  Nate Lewis runs the show for South Range.

Lewis is the picture of a great point guard. He has the ability to score whoever he wants, he can definitely create his own shot if he has to.  But Nate sacrifices good shots for great shots.  You could make a real argument that Lewis sacrifices about 6 points per game purely getting his teammates better shots. That selflessness is not common at this level of basketball.  Everyone is trying to make a name for themselves, and present themselves to coaches.  Lewis however understands that when coaches are looking at point guards, they like to see them pass up a good shot for a teammates great shot.  He sees the bigger picture.  Because of that South Range has a balanced offense, that always seems to find ways to win down the stretch.

Lewis took the time to do an interview with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about this roller coaster season in South Range.  They talk about the key to this big turnaround, how close the team has gotten this season, and so much more.  Check out the latest South Range basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

MOORE PLAYS HERO; SENDS SOUTH RANGE TO THE TITLE GAME

By Noah Ricks

WARREN, OH – It was a district semifinal to remember at Warren Harding High School between South Range and Brookfield. In a game where neither team led by more than four, it would take a tip-in off of a missed free throw by Landon Moore as the buzzer sounded. That was enough to lift the South Range Raiders to a 45-44 upset win over the Brookfield Warriors.

The first quarter set the tone for how the game would turn out: back-and-forth with tough defense. It was only tied up at 7-7 after one, but Brookfield would gain a slight edge over the Raiders to close out the first half, heading into the locker room only up by two at 17-15. The Warriors were led in that first half by 6’5’’ senior Isaiah Jones, who would pick up 12 of the team’s 17 points in the first sixteen minutes. Jones, alongside teammate Donovan Pawlowski, would lead all scorers with 18.

South Range would have short stretches of consecutive points throughout the second half, as key rebounds by Ayden Leon and two crucial threes by Luke Rohan helped lead the Raider charge. They would find a way to contain Jones, holding him to just six second-half points. This well-balanced attack would help set up the final stretch of the game.

Down two, the Raiders were trying to get a potential game-winning shot up, but were fouled by Brookfield with 1.4 seconds to spare. Nate Lewis was sent to the foul line and hit the first one to pull it within one. After a timeout was called, Lewis’ second shot bounced off the rim, but Landon Moore was right there to pick it up and put it back in at the buzzer, sending the South Range fans into a frenzy.

South Range (15-9) has now won 14 of 17 and will now have their toughest challenge against a high-scoring Lutheran East team in the district championship. That will be on Friday at Harding, with tip-off being at 7:00. Brookfield’s season comes to a close at 18-6.

YSN’s Noah Ricks got a chance to talk with South Range coach TJ Irons following the upset win. The full interview can be watched below.

MAKING YOU TOPSY TURVEY

CANFIELD OH- When things aren’t going right for a team and they need to turn it around, it’s always the experience they turn towards. Leaders that have been there before, and have come out the other side. True leaders stand up when others stay down. It’s easy to lead when things are going right, but the question is who shows up when they’re not.  South Range had to discover that this season after an 0-5 start.  Dylan Turvey was one of the players that put his feet on the line and never backed down from the challenge.  He’s been a staple in this program since his freshman year, and there was no way he was about to let it fail.

Turvey leads the best by making sure his teammates know he’s willing to do everything they are being asked of.  If the Raiders need someone to score, Dylan has it covered, if the Raiders need a distributer to make others wide open, Dylan has it covered, if the Raiders need lock down defense, Dylan has it covered. Point of the matter is Dylan is a player that does whatever it takes for the team to succeed.  He buys in to the brotherhood that has been the factor in the Raiders turnaround.  Just like all great leaders do, Turvey stood up when the outside world expected him to fall down. His team followed suit.

Dylan was kind enough to take some time to do an interview with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig.  They talk about the conversations that were had during the team’s turnaround, what he’s learned throughout his career, and much more.  Check out the latest South Range basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

PLAYING ON THE BOUNDARIES

CANFIELD OH- If you want a story of redemption and turnaround, you should look no further than South Range basketball. A lot of people on the outside had the team dead in the water just five games in to the season. The winless Raiders were nobody’s choice to win the conference, or get in to districts.  But since when do the Raiders care what people think? They did win the conference, and they did make it to districts.  Along the way they have developed one of the deadliest perimeter threats in the whole area in sophomore Luke Rohan.

Rohan has taken the NE8 by force.  He now has the attention of every defense that scouts against the Raiders.  It adds a dynamic asset to the Raiders offense that they haven’t had in a couple years.  In the past scouting the Raiders was keeping them out of the paint. Now if you zone in too much on that Rohan will burn you from the outside.  There was a stretch of three games this season where Luke hit 17 threes.  From that point on his confidence has been high, and his stroke has been smooth.  Adding him to the dominant post players in the Raiders arsenal is almost like a cheat code.

Luke took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about the wonderful season he has had.  They discuss how the leadership of the Raiders has helped him grow, the unity this team has shown, and much more.  Check out the latest South Range Player Profile only on YSN!

RAIDERS DASH TO DISTRICTS

CANFIELD OH- South Range has made a living this year of winning close games.  They have put their fans through all the stress that nail biters bring.  After a ten day hiatus the South Range faithful were anxious to see their team on the hardwood one more time in their home gym.  With a trip to the district semifinals on the line the Raiders passed on the thriller and ran away with a 56-17 win over United.

Landon Moore started fast, and never slowed down. He led the Raiders offense with 23 points on the night.  It was the last career home game for Ayden Leon who went out with a bang scoring 14 points.  Luke Rohan added 6 points as well.  United was paced by Luke Courtney with 5 points.

South Range advances to the district semifinals where they’ll play Brookfield.  The game will take place at Warren Harding high school on Tuesday at 7:00.

UNITED KNOCKS OUT THE RAIDERS TO ADVANCE

HANOVERTON, OHIO- United took on South Range in the Division III sectional round of the girls tournament on Wednesday night. It was a renewal of an old school rivalry.  The two teams spent a good amount of time battling each other for the league not too long ago.   In what was a thrill of a game this time around, the Golden Eagles were led by Grace Knight with 10 points, Madison Kibler and Sam Lippiatt each put up 9 points. That offense was enough to help the Eagles fly to a 43-34 win.

South Range was led by Emma Cunningham who finished her career with a 13 point performance.  Senior Taylor McClish was also in double figures with 11 points to close out her career as a Raider. United will move on to the Sectional final to take on Southeast at home this Saturday.
