SOUTH RANGE STAYS COOL DOWN THE STRETCH

CANFIELD OH- It’s no secret that South Range has been accustomed to playing close games this year.  The experience has given them a ton of confidence in close game situations.  That came in handy yet again on Friday as they had to hold on to beat Springfield 35-34.  It was a game the Raiders led by as much as 8 in the first half before the Tigers took a 19-18 lead into half.  They would keep their slim lead throughout the third quarter, but South Range would manage to wiggle their way in front down the stretch of the final frame.  With 11 seconds left and a one point lead it was defense the Raiders had to rely on to seal the win.  They didn’t even let the Tigers get a shot off.

It was the tag team of Landon Moore and Ayden Leon that led the Raiders on the night with 10 points each.  Nate Lewis, and Luke Rohan both managed 6 points to contribute to the offense.

Springfield was paced by Seandelle Gardner with 11 points. Both Dylan Sheely and Brandon Price added 8 points a piece.

South Range will celebrate senior night on Tuesday as they host Hubbard.  Springfield returns to league play as well on Tuesday as they host Waterloo.

POLAND KNOCKS DOWN THE RAIDERS

CANFIELD OH- South Range came in to Friday night all of the sudden in a three way tie for first place in the NE8.  With the remainder of their NE8 schedule against teams below them, the Raiders thought that a share of the title was in their grasp. However, Poland came in and dashed all of that and knocked the Raiders down a peg with a 55-46 win.  It was the final frame that has been where the Raiders shined the brightest during this current conference win streak. But Friday night it was the fourth quarter that haunted them. The Raiders offense stalled and they only scored 6 points in the frame.

Poland was led by JP Genova who dazzled the crowd with a game-high 20 points.  Carson Maurer played well especially in the second half on his way to a 12 point game.  Danny Nittoli was also in double figures with 10 points.

South Range got a huge game from Dylan Turvey despite the loss. He was able to find his way to 18 points.  Ayden Leon also worked his way into double figures with 11 points on the night.  Landon Moore, and Luke Rohan both chipped in 6.

Poland will use this win as a springboard into the next one as they host Girard. South Range is also at home on Tuesday as they’ll host Hubbard.

GIRARD LEAVES THE RAIDERS SHIPWRECKED

CANFIELD OH- South Range has been a tough place to play for Girard over the years.  They have never beaten the Raiders in Canfield since the NE8 was born.  Earlier this season the Indians got their first conference victory over the Raiders, and now they eyed a season sweep.  After a close first quarter, it was a big 20-6 2nd quarter that gave Girard the distance they’d need.  Even though the Raiders tried to rally in the second half, the 17 point halftime lead was too much to come back from. The closest the Raiders got was eight points.  The Indians would go on to secure the win 44-35.

Sieasia Triplett led the Indians with 13 points. Girard was pretty balanced on offense having four players score more than 7.  Abbie Rafferty was also in double figures with 10 points.  Allison Durkin chipped in 9 points to the offense.  Mia Malito added 7 points as well.

South Range was paced by Sydney Penick with 11 points.  Emma Cunningham tried to Will her team back into the game scoring all 7 of her points in the second half.  Devin Sauerwein and Maddie Dado both finished the night with 5.

Girard will take this big win in stride and move on to play at Niles on Monday.  South Range will play their last home game of the season on Monday against Struthers.

RAIDERS BREATHE EASY

CANFIELD OH- South Range had been cutting it close over the last few weeks.  It seems like every game came down to last second heroics.  On Tuesday however while hosting Lakeview it was done third quarter heroics that let the Raiders pull away from the Bulldogs and breathe east down the stretch. The Raiders outscored Lakeview 14-7 in the third frame to take an 11 point 35-24 lead into the 4th. They’d go on to win 51-33.

Luke Rohan continued his scoring streak with 18 points to lead the Raiders.  Ayden Leon put in a lot of work in the paint and finished with 15 points.  Landon Moore was also in double figures with 12.

Lakeview was led on the night by Ryan Gee with 12 points.  They also got a good contribution from Tyler Capon who got into double figures with 10.

South Range will celebrate senior night on Friday as they host Poland in another NE8 clash.  Lakeview will try and bounce back on Friday as they host Struthers.

MCCLISH WITH THE SWISH

CANFIELD OH- South Range came in to this season with just two seniors on their roster. For most teams that would mean they’d need other younger players to step up and help lead, but not with the Raiders.  The senior tandem of Emma Cunningham and Taylor McClish are plenty to carry the leadership.  We caught up with Emma earlier in the season, so now it’s time to turn your attention to Taylor.  While Emma’s story led you inside the paint to her size and post ability, Taylor’s story makes you look beyond the arc.  McClish has quickly grown into one of the Raiders most reliable deep threats on the floor.  It’s pretty impressive considering she wasn’t on the roster last season. Taking that long off from touching a basketball and picking it right back up isn’t common.  But Taylor is a different breed, and she has not taken any steps back but instead steps forward.

In you think McClish can’t handle the pressure senior year on the basketball floor can bring, you don’t know her. She is a professional athlete after all. She races four wheels at the highest level.  That is a sport where one tiny mistake can cause some pretty serious injury. So your full court press won’t phase the girl who whips around an off road track at high speeds.

McClish leads the Raidersvin three pointers this season with 22 made up to this point.  She shoots close to 30% behind the arc and averages over 6 points per game.  She gets in on rebounds as well. McClish goes up and gets 6.2 boards per contest.

McClish took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about her senior season. They talk about what drew her back to the court, stepping into a leadership role, and much more. Check out the latest South Range Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

SAUERWEIN SETS THE TONE FOR SOUTH RANGE

CANFIELD OH- In a game where the offensive start was slow, it was South Range point guard Devin Sauerwein that set the tone and scored the first 4 points of the game for the Raiders on steals, and transition layups.  The offense relaxed after that slow start in a 43-30 win.  The Raiders used a balanced offense to get the job done.  4 players scored at least 8 points for the Raiders.  The Raiders defense was lock down as usual. They held Lakeview to 4 points in the third quarter to firmly take control of the game.

Sauerwein led the way for South Range finishing the night in double figures with 10 points.  Emma Cunningham was right behind her scoring 9 points on the night. Maddie Dado and Taylor McClish both were able to contribute 8 points.

Lakeview was led by Izzy Haines finishing with 8 points on the night. Next on the stat book for the Bulldogs were both Maggie Pavlansky and Brooke Schneider both finishing with 6.

South Range will stay in league play on Thursday as they’ll host Girard. Lakeview will try and bounce back as they host Jefferson.

COWBOYS ROPE IN THE RAIDERS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Back in action for the first time since last Friday, the Chaney Cowboys (9-6) saw three players reach double digits in their 61-52 victory over the visiting South Range Raiders (9-8).

Six different Cowboys would score in the opening quarter of play to jumpstart Chaney to a five point lead at the end of one. Matt Jones led the way with six first quarter points.

South Range would close the gap to just one by the break, thanks to lights out shooting by sophomore guard, Luke Rohan. Rohan scored 12 first half points, knocking down a pair of threes in the first as well as another duo in the second.

The two teams would trade blows throughout the third quarter trading the lead back and forth before Chaney would close the period on a run to take a four-point lead into the fourth.

Rohan would start the fourth blazing hot, knocking down another pair of three’s to evaporate and take the lead from Chaney. The Cowboys would respond by ramping up the pressure defensively, forcing turnovers to get out and run. Matt Jones and Jason Hewlett would combine for 11 of the Cowboy’s 18 fourth quarter points to close out the Chaney victory.

RAIDERS FIND THEMSELVES IN ANOTHER DRAMATIC FINISH

CANFIELD OH- At this point, it seems like all South Range does is play in games that require dramatic finishes.  After coming off a win on the road against Girard with a buzzer beater by Ayden Leon, the Raiders now eyed Jefferson.  Because of that Raider victory over Girard Jefferson is now tied for first place in the NE8.  South Range came in just one game back from both teams.  The closeness of the teams in the standings formulated the kind of game you would expect. A close back and forth tug of war. The only question was who would have the final pull?

Jefferson led early, South Range led for a big chunk of the middle portion, and then Jefferson took a lead late. It was at that moment the Raiders made that final pull.  With the game tied with just under a minute to go, it was free throws making the difference. Dylan Turvey knocked down a pair on an intentional foul call, and then Leon knocked down two in the next possession.  With it now 63-59 the Falcons would score quick from three to cut it back to 1, and send Landon Moore to the free throw line with about 5 seconds left.  Moore would miss the shot, but his teammate Leon was there to clean it up, his offensive rebounded wasted the rest of the clock and gave the Raiders another thrilling win 63-62.

For the Raiders it was Moore that led the way. He put in 23 points on the night.  Leon was also clutch, especially down the stretch and finished with 15 points.  Luke Rohan was the Raiders biggest perimeter threat and finished with 14.

Anthony Cavetta and Joe DeGeorge both led the way for Jefferson with 22 points each.  Grant Hitchcock rounded out the rest of the Falcons scoring with 18.

South Range has a tough non league matchup on Saturday as they travel to Chaney.  Jefferson can bring themselves back to first place on Tuesday as they host Girard.

RAIDERS LET OUT FRUSTRATION

NILES OH- South Range was coming in to Thursday as an angry team. They were coming off a game on Monday against Poland that everyone on the roster wanted, and bad.  The Raiders fell 11 points short of the Bulldogs. They didn’t let that disappointment effect them though, they made it drive them. They cruised in to Niles and led wire to wire in a 55-15 win.

Taylor McClish had a great night for the Raiders as she led the way with 13 points.  Emma Cunningham was right on her average as she scored 11 points for the Raiders.  Devin Sauerwein found success in a 9 point performance.  Sydney Penick contributed 6 points to the cause.  Abbey Reed led the Dragons with 7 points.

South Range returns to the friendly confines of their home gym on Monday as they host Lakeview.  Niles gets back at it Saturday as they host Badger in a non conference game.

IT HELPS TO HAVE A CUNNINGHAM

CANFIELD OH- South Range girls basketball has had a ton of success since 2013.  They have won 6 district championships in that time, and have gotten to two regional finals. Those two regional finals were back to back seasons while Emma Cunningham was a freshman and sophomore.  Just two seasons removed from that now, Cunningham is now a senior leader of the Raiders team.  She has grown in to her own as one of the most feared players across the NE8.  She is someone that opposing coaches have to game plan for, and even then sometimes it’s not enough. Cunningham is tall enough, but her wingspan is what gives her the ultimate edge, especially on the defensive side of the ball.  Cunningham has had multiple games this season with 4 blocks or more.  Once she realized that shot blocking was going to a skill she could add to her resume, she worked insanely hard to make sure her technique was on point.

Cunningham averages 3.5 blocks per game and has gathered a total of 46 blocks on the year.  As far as her offense goes, she leads the Raiders scoring a averaging 10.9 points per game. She isn’t far off from averaging a double double with her 7.8 rebounds per contest thrown in there as well.

Cunningham took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about her senior campaign.  They also get into her development as a player, her family legacy, and so much more. Don’t miss the latest South Range Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN.
