SPRINGFIELD COMES BACK ON THE RAIDERS TO MOVE ON

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield got their quest for a District championship started on Saturday as they battled a tough South Range team in a 2-1 victory.

Springfield went down 1-0 early to the Raiders as Julienna Koller had a wind aided goal that bounced over Tiger keeper,Caitlin Cappelli’s. head.  Springfield responded off an assist over the top from Sami Shafer to Maddie Page. Page put the ball in the lower right corner to tie the game at 1-1.

Kendall Maughan got fouled just outside the 18 midway through the second half and Hannah Stouffer put the direct kick in the left side of the goal to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

From that point on the Springfield defense locked down and secured the section tournament win. Cappelli had 3 saves for the Tigers and Hannah Ball had 12 for South Range.

Springfiekd advances to the sectional final on Wednesday. They will travel to 6th seeded Pymatuning Valley with a trip to the district semis on the line.

 

 

THE LEON’S DEN

BOARDMAN, OH- When you take a look down to the field prior to the game and see #24 for South Range, you can’t help but be impressed.  Size, speed, great hands, football IQ, agility, and intensity flows through the pipes of the Raider senior.

Ayden Leon has waited for his time to shine.  He’s prayed for these opportunities, and he’s earned his stripes along the way.

The best part about this young man, is none of the things listed above- but the heart he has to do everything for others.  Simply stated- Ayden Leon would give you the shirt off his back if you earned his respect.

A young man with an incredibly bright future, taking trips to the University of Kentucky, and receiving looks from schools like Princeton means that Ayden might be finally making his way onto the radar of Saturday afternoons very soon.  However, before he gets there- according to him- he and his teammates have some work ahead of them on Friday Nights.

BOARDMAN, OH- Being an athlete is in the DNA of South Range Senior, Jake Starkey.  One of the most athletic families you’ll come across (not to mention competitive) is making their name known in the 330 this year more than any previous year.

A big reason is the guy who wears #28 for the South Range Raiders.  Starkey seems to never come off the field- you can presumably find him in the “South Range Swarm” on every tackle of every play on any given Friday night.

We sat down with Jake and talked about the season that is, alongside the adversity he felt with the loss of not only a teammate but his brother’s season-ending injury.

SHANE LIKES TO SHINE

BOARDMAN, OH- “Small But Mighty” the sign reads at Raider Stadium, alongside the number 11 on the banner.  Shane Lindstrom might be one of the smaller players in the tri-state area, but could also be considered to be pound for pound the best competitor in that same demographic.

The South Range senior starred earlier in his life with gymnastics, but according to his dad, always was holding a football.  A young man who you can see is determination personified anytime he has the ball go in his direction- Lindstrom has had a big-time year, leading the Raiders in receiving through 8 weeks, and some of the best highlight-making plays this area has seen in years.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Shane Lindstrom in this week’s Player Profile for South Range.

FEREN MAKES IT 1000 AS RAIDERS TAKE DOWN MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a game that got pushed back a day, South Range wasn’t phased a bit. The Raiders went on the road to Mooney to make it two wins in a row. They took down the Cardinals in four sets (25-14 25-27 25-12 25-14)

 

The biggest moment for the Raiders was setter Jamie Feren reaching 1000 assists in her career. Maria Primavera had a stellar outing finishing with 24 kills and a pair of aces.  Sarah Kuhns led the Raiders in assists with 28. She also served up 4 aces.  Gianna Pasquale led the Raiders defense with 27 digs.

The regular season for the Raiders concludes with a record of 11-11. They will go on the road for their first tournament game as they travel to take on Columbiana.  Mooney has one more game on their regular season skate before tournaments. They will travel to Hoban on Saturday.

SOUTH RANGE THE TOP RAIDERS IN TOWN

CANFIELD OH- South Range got back to winning on Tuesday night as they took care of a challenge from Division 1 Warren Harding. The Raiders quickly won in 3 sets.  (25-14 25-12 25-16)

Olivia Meli had a nice day out of the middle with 7 kills and 4 digs.  Maddie Dado was all over the floor getting her hands in all the categories. She had 15 digs, 5 kills, and a pair of aces.  Gianna Pasquale led the defense with 20 digs.  Jamie Feren notched a double double with 14 assists, and 14 digs. She also served up 4 aces.

South Range is back in action on Thursday as they travel to Cardinal Mooney.

SOUTH RANGE KEEPS FALCONS GROUNDED

JEFFERSON, OH- For seven weeks, the South Range Raiders have been on the winning end of things on the scoreboard.  Jefferson’s valiant air attack certainly posed a threat leading into week 8, but the Raiders quickly extinguished flames from the nest in a 42-7 victory.

South Range started just under the ten-minute mark when Billy Skripac bounced in a run from 10-yards away.  On the very next drive offensively, Skripac did it again from 1-yard out to give the Raiders a two-score advantage at 14-0.

Jefferson would get on the board just after the second quarter began when Grant Hitchcock ran the ball in from six yards away to cut the score in half at 14-7.

South Range would take the momentum back quickly when Tyler Remish blasted his way into the endzone from four yards away to make it 21-7.  The Raiders would score once more before the half when Skripac would find Shane Lindstrom a yard away to make the game 28-7.

After the break, Skripac kept the same script when he called his own number from 5-yards out to make it a 35-7 lead.  The Raiders would wrap up the game with 2:47 to go in the third when Skripac connected with Ayden Leon from 48-yards to put the game away at 42-7.

South Range would finish with 399 yards of offense through 53 plays, which included 181 yards through the air and 218 yards on the ground.  Jefferson would finish with 114 yards total in the contest, every one of them on the ground.

Billy Skripac would finish with 148 yards on seven completions and a pair of scores through the air, while adding three on the ground on his eight rushes.

Tyler Remish would lead the rushing attack with 109 yards and a score.  JD Crouse would lead receivers with two receptions for 59 yards, but Leon and Lindstrom hauled in a TD apiece.

Nick and Joey Plunkett were the defensive leaders with five tackles apiece, Tyler Remish added 4.5 tackles to the tally for the Raiders.

Luke Funtash led the Falcons offensively with 56 yards on 13 rushing attempts.  Grant Hitchcock would add 42 yards and a score as well.

South Range (8-0) will look to keep their winning ways next week as Lakeview will invade Raider Stadium for Homecoming, while Jefferson (5-3) will head to Poland to take on the Bulldogs.

LYTLE HITS 1000 AS BULLDOGS STAND ALONE ATOP NE8

CORTLAND OH- There was a ton on the line on Thursday in Lakeview as the Bulldogs hosted South Range. No only was it Lakeview’s chance to claim sole possession of the NE8 crown, but senior Tara Lytle was staring down the barrel of her 1000th career kill.  Lakeview got the win, and Lytle got the milestone. (25-15 25-11 25-9)

Lytle needed 11 kills coming in to reach her goal, and she shattered that finishing with 20.  Mallory Mailach took the lead setting on the night finishing with 22 assists.  Maddie Bayus led the Lakeview defense with 11 digs.

The Raiders were led by both Maria Primavera, and Ella Crumbacher finishing with 5 kills each.  Jamie Feren set up the offense and led with 9 assists.  Primavera also led the Raiders defense racking up 12 digs.

 

 

Lakeview are the 2022 NE8 Champions.  Lakeview has won 4 of the 5 NE8 championships since the conference was established.  The Bulldogs move on to host Mineral Ridge on Wednesday.  South Range still managed a winning record inside the NE8.  They’ll travel to East Liverpool on Monday.

 

BILLY THE KID RIDES AT DUSK

BOARDMAN, OH- What happens when you mix a very high football IQ, speed, agility, a strong arm, pin-point accuracy,  and power-running into a quarterback?  You get a record-breaking stallion of a signal-caller who’s been able to go undefeated in the regular season in every start he’s made in high school.

That’s Billy Skripac.

Don’t worry if you can’t spell the last name, properly.  He’s not out for personal gain- he’s out to trap more ghosts than Peter Venkman of the Ghostbusters.

Skripac has taken the challenge of taking this football team further than they’ve ever gone- and ultimately winning the big trophy at the end of the tournament.  With 17 at the helm- the odds have never been better for the burgundy and gold.

We sat down with QB1 to discuss what teams he’s played for have been better, his future plans for himself, as well as this team.

RAIDERS ESCAPE FIVE SET THRILLER IN POLAND

POLAND OH- It seems like no matter the sport, a matchup between Poland and South Range is always prone to chaos. On Tuesday night it was the volleyball court that played host to this rivalry. The Raiders escaped a thriller in five sets. (25-23 16-25 23-25 25-22 15-11)

 

Maria Primavera had an amazing night. She led the Raiders offense with 24 kills.  Maddie Mook added 6 kills to the offense as well. Sarah Kuhns set up the offense well as she finished with 27 assists. Primavera notched a double double by leading the team in digs with 26.  The Raiders had two other players dig up over 20 balls.  Gianna Pasquale finished the night with 25, and Maddie Dado ended the night with 23.

Poland was led on offense by Sarah Forsyth who finished the night with 16 kills. Sophia D’Angelo contributed 9 kills as well.  Morgan Bailey set the ball well all night and finished with 25 assists.  Madelyn Ray led the Bulldogs defense with 21 digs.

South Range moves on to finish out NE8 play on Thursday as they travel to Lakeview.  Poland will also close out conference play on Thursday as they host Niles.
