SOUTH RANGE POURS IT ON POLAND

CANFIELD, OH- A week ago, many local critics were looking at South Range as a team on the brink of distress, and they had good reason following a game that challenged the Raiders physically and mentally against Struthers.  They heard it for seven days: six turnovers, the pressure is too much, etc.

However, on Friday the narrative was flipped on its side, and South Range looked like they not only regained focus, but a chip on their shoulder, and the leadership they had possessed from last year’s squad when they defeated Poland 48-0 on Friday night.

A win that many might look at as what Poland had been missing, may be remember at season’s end as South Range’s turning point.

Billy Skripac led South Range’s attack in the first drive offensively by scampering in for a 7-yard score to take a lead they would never give back.  Skripac kept things going just minutes later on a 33-yard connection to Ayden Leon that developed just as Coach Allegreto had drawn up on the grease board.

In the second frame, more of the same from South Range as Hunter Knauf punched in a score from 2-yards away to make the score 20-0.  The Skirpac to Leon would reconnect just minutes later on a 14-yard slant pass that put the Raiders up 27-0.  With 45 seconds left before the break, Jake Starkey would blast his way into the endzone from 6 yards out to put South Range up at the half by 34.

It was more of the same in the second half as Blake Ewert broke away in the third stanza from 32 yards out to put Range up 41-0.  Sophomore Tristan Toy would put the exclamation mark on the game with a 19-yard touchdown to Dean Depizzo to finalize the scoring at 48-0.

South Range’s defense was a big part of the story, as they held Poland to only 19 yards of total offense on the night.  Poland only crossed into Raider territory once the entire game.

The Raider offense was on fire with 406 yards of offense that included 261 rushing yards, and 145 yards through the air.  Turnovers were not a factor this week as Raider signal callers were 3-0 ratio from a TD to interception perspective.  South Range also racked up 21 first downs to Poland’s 3.

Skripac went 7/8 through the air for 116 yards and two scores.  Tristan Toy was a perfect 2/2 for 29 yards and a tuddy.  Blake Ewert had half a dozen carries for South Range.  The “E-Train” chugged his way to 75 yards and a trip to the endzone.  He was supplemented by fellow backfield mates, Tyler Remish who had 68 yards on five carries, and Hunter Knauf who had five carries as well for 25 yards and a score.

Ayden Leon had a pair of catches for 47 yards, both of which resulted in six points for the Raiders.  Shane Lindstrom hauled in 3 catches for 33 yards, Dean Dipizzo had 2 for 29, and both Jake Starkey and JD Crouse had another snag for 18, respectively.  Starkey and Crouse led the defense as well- Jake had six tackles and Crouse had four- which included a sack.

For Poland, Matt Boccieri led the way with 15 yards on seven attempts rushing.  JP Genova stepped up with a 5/8 completion night for 22 yards and a pick.  Paul Greco led the Dogs on defense with 5.5 tackles.  Boccieri had 4 tackles, one of which was a tackle for loss.

South Range (5-0) will now turn to one of the area’s most coveted matchups this week as they take on Girard (5-0) at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 6.  Poland (2-3) will look to get back to even as they return home to take on Niles.

CANFIELD, OH- Coming off perhaps the toughest and most physical game of the season, the South Range football team were able to cling on to victory against NE8 foe, Struthers.

Still undefeated, South Range now faces stage two of the gauntlet we know as conference play as Poland comes to town- which is a game that is never easy for either team nor does it matter what your record is.

We caught up with Coach Yeagley to discuss lessons learned, and what bridge needs to be built between weeks 4 and 5 to keep the streak going for the Burgundy and Gold.  All that and more on Episode 3 of the South Range Football Coach’s Corner with Dan Yeagley.

SOUTH RANGE SURVIVES STRUTHERS AMBUSH

CANFIELD, OH- One play into the game on Friday night, you knew Struthers came to play.

After an impressive kick return by Ayden Leon to open the game in Struthers territory, highly-touted senior quarterback, Billy Skripac dropped back and tossed to his left just out of the grasp of Shane Lindstrom and into the hands of a Struthers defensive back, and all in attendance knew we would be in for a wild night.

As wild as it was with six South Range turnovers, the Raiders had just enough to get past NE8 foe, Struthers with a 23-13 victory to remain perfect in the 2022 campaign.

Struthers pulled out all the stops just a week after a heartbreaking defeat in overtime, Alec Grzyb was all over the field on both sides of the ball.  Grzyb started with a touchdown pass to Chaz Ekoniak from 9 yards out to put the Cats up 7-0 in the second stanza.

South Range would retaliate just minutes later with Billy Skripac’s wheel route pass to Shane Lindstrom from 15 yards out that resulted in a score to even the game at 7-7.  Then, just before the half, Skripac would plunge into the endzone on a QB Keeper to give the Raiders their first advantage of the night.

Just after the break, Anthony Carter broke a 42-yard touchdown on the stingy Raider defense, but the extra point was no good, preserving the Raider lead at 14-13.

With just over five minutes left in the third, the Wildcats were backed up against their own goal line when Chris Colucci invaded the endzone and forced an intentional grounding call that resulted in a Raider safety to give them a 16-13 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

In that final quarter, the Burgundy and Gold would put the cherry on top with a 19-yard connection from Skripac to JD Crouse to put the game away 23-13.

The Raiders output offensively was their lowest of the season with only 207 yards of offense on 45 plays.  The majority of that offense coming through the air for 130 yards, and 28 rushing attempts garnered 77 hards for Range.

The story of the game was the six turnovers by South Range, four interceptions, and two fumbles that cost the home team points, and field position throughout the night.  However, outside of third down, Struthers was challenged to find time to move the ball on South Range throughout the evening.  Struthers was 4/15 on third downs, but included a third and 32 conversion that kept Struthers knocking on the door.

Grzyb was the leading rusher for Struthers with 25 yards on 11 attempts.  Najier Howard did a great job throughout the night showing off a cannon of an arm on multiple occasions.

For South Range, the highlight really came on defense, as Ayden Leon led the way with 6.5 tackles, and 3.5 sacks.  Chris Colucci had 5.5 tackles and was credited with a safety that turned the tide of the game.  Bailey Ryan put the game away late with a big strip sack fumble recovery that led to the victory formation for Range.

South Range (4-0)will have to sharpen its pencil this week as they take on Poland coming off a big win over Hubbard.  While Struthers (1-3) will look to bounce back against Hubbard.

BULLDOGS SLIP AWAY FROM SOUTH RANGE

CANFIEKD OH- Like it always seems to be, the game between Poland and South Range came down to the wire. The Bulldogs were able to grab this one on the road in a dramatic five set thriller. (25-21 22-25 25-16 23-25 15-11)

Sarah Forsyth put together a fantastic evening finishing with 15 kills.  Morgan Bailey led the charge setting with 16 assists.  Bella Khoury led the defense with 11 digs. She also finished with 3 aces.

Madie Mook and Maria Primavera both led the Raiders with 9 kills each.  Gianna Pasquale had a huge night on defense with 31 digs.  Sarah KUHNS set up 16 assists. Olivia Meli was clutch at the net with 3 blocks.

Poland will venture outside of the conference with a home match against Boardman on Monday.  South Range will have a big test Tuesday as they host Lakeview.

GIRARD FIGHTS HARD FOR THE SWEEP
