BOARDMAN SPLITS SPRING BREAK DOUBLE HEADER

COCOA BEACH FL- Boardman fell to Oak Harbor 2-1 on Monday on the final play of the game. The game was tied at one in the bottom of the eighth when Porter Gregory singled, scoring one run. Both teams were strong in the circle. Oak Harbor pitchers struck out four, while Boardman sat down 11.

Oak Harbor were the first to get on the board in the fifth when Alyse Sorg doubled, scoring one run. Maddie Wymer hit a sacrifice fly, which helped the Spartans tie the game at one in the top of the sixth.

Sorg earned the win for Oak Harbor. The starting pitcher surrendered four hits and one run over eight innings, striking out four and walking two. Tori Strines took the loss for Boardman. The right-handed pitcher went seven and one-third innings, surrendering two runs one earned on five hits, striking out 11 and walking three.

Wymer led the Spartans with one run batted in. Leadoff hitter Strines led Boardman with two hits in four at bats.

GAME 2

Boardman bounces back from losing game 1 as they outsted Oak Harbor 5-3 in game 2 on Monday. Oak Harbor jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Tatum Baumgartner doubled, scoring one run, and Allie Giezie singled, scoring two runs.

Boardman took the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two walks.Addie Kowacich earned the win. The right-handed pitcher surrendered seven hits and three runs (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out one and walking three. Alyse Sorg took the loss for Oak Harbor. The starting pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on two hits, striking out three and walking five.

Maddie Wymer, Ava Freeborough, Tori Strines, and Leah Habeger each drove in one run for the Spartans. Kowacich led with two hits in three at bats. Strines paced the offense with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing six walks for the game. Boardman turned one double play in the game.

 

SPARTANS SWINGING FREE IN SEASON DEBUT

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman easily dispatched Howland in their season opener on Monday, 7-1.

Boardman opened the scoring in the first after Maddie Wymer singled, scoring one run.

The Spartans added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Howland committed an error, Tori Strines doubled, and Laci Jurus singled, each scoring one run.

Gabi Sterra earned the win for Boardman. They surrendered eight hits and one run over seven innings, striking out eight and walking two. Brooke Tatar took the loss for Howland. They went six innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits, striking out five and walking two.

The Spartans piled up 10 hits in the game. Jurus and Wymer each collected two hits for Boardman Varsity Spartans. Jurus, Olivia LaCivita, Wymer, Strines, Leah Habeger, Sferra, and Alex Ward each drove in one run. Jurus stole two bases.

Alyssa Massucci and Sydney VanNess each collected two hits for Howland. Brianna Deter led with one run batted in. The cleanup hitter went 1-for-3 on the day.

Boardman will take on Howland on Tuesday for their next game in game 2 of the series. The game is scheduled to be played at Howland.

BOARDMAN BASEBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JOE GABRIEL

BOARDMAN OH- It’s just about baseball time in the area, and no one is more excited to get back to action than the Boardman Spartans.  After a season where a young team went through adversity, the Spartans are banking on experience being a fantastic tool to success.  Coach Joe Gabriel and his staff have always put their players in the best position to win, and now with an experienced group of players that job gets easier.  The Spartans play in a tough AAC that will always keep them on their toes.  They’ll try to push through it and make some serious waves in the standings.

Coach Gabriel took the time to catch up with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about the upcoming season in Boardman. They talk about the lessons learned from last season, being a part of the coaching room inside the conference, and so much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Joe Gabriel.

BOARDMAN SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH FRED MOOTZ

BOARDMAN OH- Spring is in the air, the weather is turning and that means that softball is right around the corner.  In Boardman Fred Mootz returns for another season heading up a talented Spartan team hungry for success in 2024.  With a lot of experience returning, especially in the infield Boardman feels like this year will be a big step up.  They finished the season 10-15 a year ago, but feel a lot of those losses can easily be turned into wins.

it’s time to turn the lights on and preview the upcoming season. Coach Mootz took the time to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about the experienced roster the Spartans have, the tough league they play in, and much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Fred Mootz!

BOARDMAN PULLS OFF THRILLING ROAD UPSET

In a heart-stopping battle on the road, Boardman pulled off a stunning upset against Massillon Perry, clinching a nail-biting victory with a final score of 58-57. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams leaving everything on the court in pursuit of the win.

Leading the charge for Boardman was Terrell McDowell, whose heroic performance included sinking the game-winning shot with just 6 seconds remaining on the clock, sealing the fate of the match. McDowell’s clutch play earned him 18 points on the night, cementing his status as a key player in the team’s success.

Contributing to Boardman’s triumph was Grayson Eicher, who delivered a solid performance with 16 points, showcasing his scoring prowess when it mattered most. Additionally, Nico Holzschuh added 9 points to the scoreboard, demonstrating the team’s depth and resilience.

With this momentum-boosting win, Boardman advances to the next round of the tournament with their sights set on further glory. They are set to face off against Hoban on Saturday at 7:00, where they will look to build upon their recent success and continue their journey towards postseason triumph.

BOARDMAN’S SEASON ENDS AT DISTRICTS

PERRY, OH- In a hard-fought battle at Perry High School, the Boardman Spartans girls basketball team concluded their season in the District Semi-Final, falling short against Rocky River with a final score of 51-42. Despite facing an uphill battle throughout the game, the Spartans showcased resilience and determination, leaving everything on the court until the final buzzer.

The first half proved to be a tough challenge for the Spartans, as they struggled to find their rhythm and trailed by 23 points heading into halftime. However, halftime served as a rallying point for the team, igniting a fiery determination to fight back and give it their all in the second half.

With unwavering heart and tenacity, the Spartans mounted an impressive comeback, cutting Rocky River’s lead to just 7 points with under four minutes remaining in the game. Despite their valiant efforts, they couldn’t close the gap further, ultimately falling short by a 9-point margin.

Leading the charge for the Spartans was Mackenzie Riccitelli, who delivered a stellar performance with 20 points and 4 steals. M.C. Werth showcased her sharpshooting skills, contributing 9 points, including three crucial 3-pointers. Sarah Bero made her presence felt on both ends of the court, tallying 6 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

Sam Duble, Ava Freeborough, and Tori Strines also made important contributions to the team’s effort, while Mikayla Rivera provided valuable minutes off the bench. As the final buzzer sounded, seniors Sam Duble, Mackenzie Riccitelli, and M.C. Werth bid farewell to the court, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership.

Despite the outcome, the Spartans achieved remarkable success throughout the season, boasting a 19-win record, securing an outright AAC Championship, and making a memorable run in the District Tournament. Their contributions to the program will be cherished and remembered for years to come, serving as an inspiration to future generations of Spartans.

KRZNARIC HITS 1,000 CAREER POINTS IN WIN OVER SPARTANS

Andover, OH- Looking to sharpen up before the playoffs the Pymatuning Valley Lakers and the Conneaut Spartans met for one final regular season game in Andover. The Lakers emerged victorious with a thrilling 92-80 win. Led by standout performances from Blake Krznaric and Caydence Wiser, the Lakers showcased their offensive prowess and celebrated a historic achievement by Krznaric.

The Lakers’ seniors rose to the occasion in this matchup, with Blake Krznaric leading the charge with an impressive 25 points. Krznaric’s outstanding performance also marked a significant milestone, as he reached 1,000 career points as a Pymatuning Valley Laker. The moment was made even more special as he was honored on his final regular-season game on his home court, adding a memorable touch to the evening’s proceedings.

Joining Krznaric in the scoring column, Caydence Wiser contributed 24 points, while Zane Neczporenko added 14 points, and Seth Bryan chipped in 11 points, highlighting the Lakers’ balanced offensive attack.

Despite a resilient effort from the Spartans, led by Chance Loomis with 28 points and Noah Hamm with 26 points, they were unable to contain the Lakers’ relentless offense.

With this victory, the Pymatuning Valley Lakers conclude their regular season with an impressive record of 17-5 and now set their sights on hosting the Lake Catholic Cougars in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs at home on 2/27/24. Eager to carry their momentum forward, the Lakers will look to make a statement in the postseason.

As for the Conneaut Spartans, they conclude their regular season with a record of 4-18 and now prepare to face the Canfield Cardinals in the OHSAA playoffs on 3/1/24. Despite the loss, the Spartans remain determined to showcase their competitive spirit and resilience on the road to postseason success.

DINAPOLI’S DAY ISN’T DONE

Gina DiNapoli: Boardman’s Swimming Sensation

As a junior at Boardman, Gina DiNapoli has already etched her name into the record books of the school’s swimming history. Last year, DiNapoli made waves when she broke school records and qualified for the state championships, showcasing her talent and determination in the pool. This year, she has taken her performance to new heights, surpassing her own records and once again earning a ticket to the state meet.

For DiNapoli, the experience of competing at the state level last season has proven invaluable in her journey this year. Armed with the confidence and knowledge gained from her previous state appearance, DiNapoli approached this season’s state qualification with a sense of determination and poise, knowing what it takes to excel on the biggest stage.

DiNapoli’s impressive performance in the pool this season has earned her qualification for the state championships in the 100 Butterfly, as well as the relays for the 200 Medley and the 200 Free. Her versatility and skill in multiple events highlight her status as one of Boardman’s top swimmers and a key contributor to the team’s success.

Excitement abounds for DiNapoli as she prepares to represent Boardman at the state meet, especially considering the collective success of the team. With five girls and four boys qualifying for the state championships, DiNapoli is thrilled to be part of a swimming program that is making a significant impact on the statewide stage.

As DiNapoli reflects on her junior year and looks towards the future, thoughts of her swimming career at the next level loom large. With aspirations of competing at the collegiate level, DiNapoli is actively considering her options and exploring career paths that will allow her to stay involved in sports beyond high school.

SPARTANS LOOMIS REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS ON SENIOR NIGHT

Conneaut, OH- In a hard-fought battle between the Conneaut Spartans and the Perry Pirates, the Pirates emerged victorious with a final score of 66-53. Despite the Spartans’ valiant effort, highlighted by Chance Loomis reaching a career milestone, the Pirates’ offensive firepower proved to be too much to handle.

With this loss, the Conneaut Spartans move to a record of 4-16 on the season, but they remain determined to bounce back in their next game against the Pymatuning Valley Lakers. The Spartans will look to build upon Loomis’ milestone performance and continue to compete at a high level.

LADY SPARTANS SHOW RESILIENCY IN VICTORY

BOARDMAN, OH- It’s certainly become a special year in Boardman, and the Lady Spartans weren’t ready to hang up their jerseys just yet.  In an electrifying first-round matchup of the OHSAA Tournament, the Boardman High School Spartans hosted the Perry High School Panthers and secured a thrilling 54-40 victory, propelling them into the Sectional Final against Revere on Thursday. The Spartans’ resilience and determination were on full display as they overcame a slow start to seize control of the game and secure the win.

Initially, the Panthers managed to build a narrow 16-8 lead in the first half, capitalizing on the Spartans’ sluggish start. However, Boardman quickly found their rhythm, ending the half on a remarkable 11-0 run to take a 19-16 lead into halftime. The momentum shift set the stage for an impressive comeback by the Spartans.

Boardman unleashed a relentless offensive onslaught in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 17-8 and establishing a commanding 12-point lead heading into the final period. The Spartans’ cohesive teamwork and tenacious defense proved to be the difference-makers as they maintained their advantage and secured the victory.

Leading the charge for the Spartans was Mackenzie Riccitelli, whose hot hand from behind the arc propelled her to an impressive 25-point performance, including four three-pointers and a flawless 7-7 record from the free-throw line. Sarah Bero contributed double digits with 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while Sam Duble added 8 points, including two crucial three-pointers.

Ava Freeborough made her presence felt with 5 points and crucial offensive rebounds, while M.C. Werth showcased her playmaking abilities with 4 assists and a key three-pointer. Mikayla Rivera chipped in 2 points to round out the scoring, while Tori Strines provided valuable depth in the post.

With the victory, the Spartans improved their record to an impressive 18-5 and set their sights on the Sectional Final against Revere. The team’s unwavering determination and resilience have positioned them for a shot at the Sectional Championship and advancement to the Districts.
