CANFIELD, OH- The South Range Raiders show at Gangelo’s welcomed an exceptional guest this week, senior Asher Moorfield, whose multifaceted talents have made him a standout in both athletic and academic realms.

With 20-plus seniors on the South Range Raiders football team, Moorfield, who has known most of his teammates since third grade, reflects on the special bond they share. “It’s great to be part of everything,” he said about the team, which currently boasts a 6-0 record after a significant win over Poland.

Moorfield’s athletic contributions go beyond the football field. As a multi-sport athlete, he has recently excelled in the niche sport of trap shooting. Starting just this year, Moorfield impressively hit 35 out of 50 targets. His burgeoning skills in this unique sport are drawing attention, and he aspires to join the Hillsdale College trap shooting team, following in his brother’s footsteps.

Balancing his sports commitments with academics, Moorfield, a saxophone player and outdoor enthusiast, has ambitious plans for the future. He hopes to pursue a career in aerospace engineering or a similar field in mathematics, expressing a desire to work on airplanes or design new models.

Moorfield’s dedication and support from his family, particularly his mother’s constant presence on the sidelines and his grandfather’s long trips from Texas to watch him compete, resonate deeply with him. “It means a lot to see her support me with everything,” he reflected.

As he looks forward to graduation, Moorfield hopes to be remembered as “someone kind and supportive.” His myriad talents and grounded personality make it clear that he is well on his way to leaving a lasting legacy at South Range High School.

GIRARD, OH—At just 14 years old, Cameron Silverman had an epiphany that tennis was her calling. Now, as Girard High School’s number one singles player, Silverman, a junior, has amassed an impressive 10-3 record this season. Having picked up her first racquet at age four and sporadically engaged with the sport in her early years, it wasn’t until her mid-teens that she truly embraced tennis with fervor.
Despite facing the challenges of a new program and the mental battles inherent in the sport, Silverman credits the camaraderie and supportive energy of her team, as well as the guidance of her devoted coaches, for her success. “It’s crazy to me. I’m so grateful,” she said, reflecting on the coach’s pivotal role in her journey.

Silverman’s disciplined approach includes self-evaluation after matches and listening to instructional videos to refine her strategies. She emphasizes the importance of mental fortitude, advising, “You have to kind of forget the bad points and just move on.”
A history enthusiast off the court, Silverman excels academically and has a particular fondness for historical studies. Known for her leadership qualities, she often draws inspiration from her uncle, a police officer who faces daily challenges with resilient optimism.

Silverman acknowledges the complexity of competing against friends but remains driven by the broader rewards awaiting her. “There’s a bigger reward at the end of the journey,” she says. Moreover, Silverman enjoys healthy pre-match snacks like Clif Bars, but she admits to indulging her sweet tooth with post-match treats such as cookies and cream ice cream.

Wrapping up her heartfelt shout-outs, Silverman thanked her parents, twin sister Addison, coaches, teammates, teachers, staff, and the athletic director, who made the tennis club possible. “It was an honor to discuss Cameron’s journey in tennis, and with her dedication and support system, the sky’s the limit for this rising star,” said Anthony Hartwig. Boardman, OH –  As the leaves turn and fall approaches, Boardman High School’s golf team bids farewell to one of its stalwarts, Carter Fick-Mills, whose senior year has been marked by reflection, leadership, and an unyielding passion for the sport. Carter’s journey with the Boardman Golf Team began at a tender age, influenced heavily by a family tradition of golf. “I’ve been around it my whole life,” Carter reminisced about his early days on the course, often playing alongside his parents and grandparents.

Entering his final year, the pressures of leadership were not lost on Carter. “I was aware a lot of the younger guys on the team were looking up to me as a leader and a role model,” he shared. His focus was on maintaining a positive demeanor, ensuring his teammates could look to him for guidance on and off the course.  The mental aspect of golf has been a significant area of growth for Carter, who emphasizes the importance of staying positive even after a tough shot. This mindset, combined with his preference for a conservative approach on the course, underscores his thoughtful and strategic playstyle.

Academically, Carter has also been a standout, boasting a 4.0 GPA. His dedication to his studies remains unwavering as he prepares for the next chapter of his life, though he admits to finding AP Chemistry particularly challenging. Still, his interests in chemistry and business hint at a promising future.

As the curtain falls on his high school golf career, Carter’s reflections are tinged with nostalgia. “It really is special just thinking about. I now have one or two more matches left, ever,” he confessed. The realization that competitive golf might end after graduation has made each round more meaningful. Despite the challenges ahead, Carter is optimistic and grateful for his experience as a Spartan. “I’m really proud to say that I’m a Spartan and part of this great group of people,” he stated, expressing his appreciation for the coaches, teammates, and friends who have supported him along the way. As he prepares to leave the greens of Boardman High, Carter extends heartfelt thanks to his parents, grandmother, and coach for their unwavering support. His journey stands as a testament to the values of hard work, leadership, and passion, leaving a lasting legacy for future Boardman golfers to follow.
