YOUNGSTOWN, OH- In a packed gymnasium filled with enthusiastic fans, the Ursuline Fighting Irish boys basketball team triumphed over Cardinal Mooney with a 69-58 home victory. This marked Ursuline’s seventh consecutive win in the heated rivalry between the two teams.

The game unfolded with Ursuline taking an early lead, but Cardinal Mooney rallied in the second quarter, showcasing a formidable offense. Despite the Cardinals’ surge, Ursuline remained composed and finished the half with a four-point advantage.

Senior guard Jibri Carter stood out for the Cardinals, contributing significantly to their offensive efforts with 20 points, even battling through an apparent cramp in the third quarter. Mooney’s Eddie Nieves added 14 points, but defensive lapses became a significant factor in their loss.

In the second half, Cardinal Mooney struggled to regain the momentum they had in the second quarter. Ursuline, with both offensive and defensive consistency, extended its lead and controlled the clock as the game progressed, ultimately securing a seventh consecutive victory against the Cardinals.

Senior Geno Lucente and freshman Jaylen Gunther, each scoring 19 points, were named players of the game, both of which were outstanding on both sides of the floor.

CHANEY POSTS BIG WIN OVER HUBBARD

HUBBARD, OH- In a thrilling road encounter, the Chaney Cowgirls showcased their resilience and determination, overcoming an 8-point deficit in the final quarter to secure a hard-fought 42-37 win against Hubbard. The victory propels Chaney to an impressive 8-3 record on the road, highlighting their ability to perform under pressure away from home.

The game unfolded with Hubbard taking an early lead, but Chaney demonstrated their tenacity by staging a comeback in the crucial final quarter. Freshman sensation Alyssa Brown played a pivotal role in the victory, contributing a stellar performance with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Brown’s all-around effort was instrumental in Chaney’s ability to turn the tide and secure the win.

Janiya Burley Anderson added to the scoring with 13 points, further bolstering Chaney’s offensive output. Meanwhile, Janiah Eiland made her presence felt on the boards, grabbing an impressive 10 rebounds to help control the paint.

JFK FLIES OVER MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- In a hard-fought battle, Warren JFK secured a narrow 51-48 road victory against Cardinal Mooney, overcoming the challenges posed by Mooney’s tenacious defense. The Eagles faced adversity throughout the contest, but crucial shots down the stretch propelled them to their sixth win of the season.

The Eagles initiated the game with a quick 7-2 run, building a 21-10 lead by the middle of the second quarter. Despite Mooney’s persistent efforts and extra possessions, Kennedy maintained control. The Cardinals closed the gap multiple times, but the Eagles responded with key plays from freshman Didi Ryan and senior Marina Sanders.

Sophomore Gianna Pompelia was clutch in the Eagles’ triumph, contributing a career-high 22 points, including a crucial three-pointer and an and-1 conversion in the fourth quarter.

A significant moment came in the fourth quarter when Pompelia, wide open on an inbound play, drilled a three-pointer, extending the Eagles’ lead to 41-32.

Cardinal Mooney mounted a comeback with a 6-0 run, narrowing the deficit to 41-38. However, Pompelia’s resilience, including an and-1 opportunity, and Sanders’ successful and-1 play, pushed the Eagles to a 49-41 advantage. Despite a late surge from Mooney, Kennedy held on to lead throughout the contest.

Senior Ava Darney added seven points for the Eagles, while teammates Hannah Myers, Didi Ryan, and Marina Sanders each contributed six points. The Eagles showcased their aggressive play, taking it to the rim and converting crucial free throws.

Sophia Diorio led Mooney with 16 points, supported by Katie Pregibon with 13 points and Talecia Huff with nine points. The Lady Cards are still looking for their first win at 0-4.

The Eagles, now standing at 6-1, look to build on their success in future matchups, while Mooney aims to turn their efforts into positive results in the upcoming games.

MOONEY MAKES MOST OF SENIOR NIGHT

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- In a spectacular display of skill and teamwork, the Cardinal Mooney Volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a resounding 3-0 sweep over Chaney. The home crowd was treated to an exciting match, with the scores reflecting Mooney’s dominance throughout the evening: 25-6, 25-14, 25-13.

The standout performances of Mooney’s players were a testament to their dedication and hard work. Leading the charge was Brinkley Bair, who recorded an impressive 10 kills and contributed 5 crucial digs. Amarra Anderson added to the offensive firepower with 6 kills and a powerful block. Jaida Lane showcased her versatility with 5 kills, 4 aces, and 3 solid blocks.

Natalie Blasko orchestrated the offense with precision, tallying an impressive 25 assists while also chipping in with 4 kills and 2 aces. Maria Pecchia’s defensive prowess was on full display as she notched 10 digs and served up 3 aces. Nina Santisi contributed significantly with 4 aces.

The victory on Senior Night was a fitting tribute to Mooney’s seniors, who have shown exceptional leadership and commitment throughout their high school volleyball journey. As they celebrated this special evening, their performance on the court showcased their skill and determination.

With this win under their belt, Mooney now looks ahead to their next challenge. They will face Ursuline in a highly anticipated Holy War rematch on Wednesday, October 11.

EAST POINTS NORTH AGAINST HOWLAND

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- In a hard-fought battle under the Friday night lights, the Youngstown East High School football team emerged victorious with a 30-16 win over the Howland Tigers.

The game was a tale of two halves, with both teams showcasing their strengths and determination. Howland got off to a strong start in the first quarter when John Perry bulldozed his way into the end zone with a 1-yard run, and Jack Litton’s kick was on the money, giving the Tigers an early 7-0 lead.

The second quarter, however, saw a shift in momentum. East’s offense came to life, and they struck back with a 26-yard pass play that resulted in a touchdown, followed by a successful conversion. But the Panthers weren’t done yet. Andrew Blackmon connected with Daryan Brownlee on a 20-yard pass for another touchdown, and their conversion was good. East had now taken the lead at 16-7.

Howland managed to put some points on the board before the half with a field goal from Litton, narrowing the gap to 16-10.

The third quarter continued to be a competitive battle, with both teams refusing to back down. East extended their lead with a 36-yard pass that resulted in a touchdown, although the conversion attempt failed. Howland answered back with Brendan Ray’s powerful 9-yard run into the end zone, and Litton’s successful kick brought the score to 22-16 in favor of East.

As the game entered the fourth quarter, East High School wasn’t finished yet. Thomas Davis powered his way through with a 7-yard run, and the Panthers’ successful conversion widened their lead to 30-16.

In the end, East secured the win with a strong team effort, overcoming an early deficit and capitalizing on their opportunities. With a final score of 30-16, they celebrated a hard-earned victory over Howland.

CHANEY POWERS TO VICTORY OVER MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH — Despite a rocky start that included a fumble on their first play, the Chaney Cowboys were granted a second chance, and they capitalized on it, defeating Cardinal Mooney 28-12 on Friday night.

The Cowboys began with favorable field position at their own 38-yard line after a strong kickoff return. However, their initial attempt to run the ball up the middle resulted in a fumble, recovered by the Cardinals at the Chaney 42-yard line.

With the ball deep in their opponent’s territory, Mooney had an opportunity to strike early. But fate had other plans, as they fumbled the ball back to Chaney on the very first play from scrimmage.

Chaney wasted no time taking advantage of the turnover. On the second play of the drive, quarterback Drew Gault connected with wide receiver Darius Stonework on a 31-yard touchdown pass.  Chaney’s next offensive possession was even more efficient than their first score. Quarterback Matt Jones broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive, extending their lead to 14-0.

While the Cowboys’ offense shone brightly in the first half, their defense proved equally formidable, effectively shutting down the Cardinals despite their lengthy drives.

Entering halftime with a 14-0 lead, Jones continued to make an impact early in the second half. With 5:07 remaining in the third quarter, he turned a draw play into an 83-yard touchdown run, giving Chaney a commanding 21-0 lead.

Mooney, however, began to mount a comeback. They scored on their next drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ashton O’Brien to wide receiver Carlos Gomes, reducing Chaney’s lead to 21-6.

The Cardinals followed up with another touchdown drive at the start of the fourth quarter, with O’Brien connecting with receiver John Brenner on a 9-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 21-12.

Despite these touchdowns from Mooney, Chaney remained composed and focused on their game plan. Jones emphasized the importance of staying positive and supportive within the team.  Chaney ultimately sealed the victory with Jones scoring his third touchdown run, extending the lead to 28-12 and securing the win.

With this win, Chaney improved their overall record to 3-3, while Mooney’s record fell to 4-3 following the loss.

CHANEY COMES UP JUST SHORT IN TWO DAY CONTEST

AKRON, OH- In one of the most interesting  football showdowns you’ll see, the Chaney Cowboys clashed with Akron East in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle (and over the course of two days.) The final score, 14-13 in favor of Akron East, highlighted the intensity and drama that unfolded on the field. The game kicked off with a surge of energy as Chaney’s Matt Jones bulldozed his way 19 yards into the endzone, powered by a successful kick from Drew Gault. This early touchdown placed the Cowboys in the lead, 7-0. Akron East swiftly countered as Ibraheem Kamakra embarked on an impressive 47-yard run to find the endzone with just 1 minute and 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Kamara’s successful kick tied the game at 7-7.

The second quarter saw Akron East seizing control. Ziare Stevens electrified the crowd with a remarkable 70-yard dash, giving his team the lead for the first time at 14-7. However, the game was temporarily halted due to inclement weather, ultimately leading to a postponement. The next afternoon, with determination ablaze, Chaney returned to the field with hopes of staging a comeback and securing a victorious start to their season.

The fourth quarter marked the decisive moment of the game. Matt Jones, displaying his prowess once more, surged into the endzone for his second touchdown, with just 1 minute and 44 seconds left on the game clock. With the score now 14-13 in favor of Akron East, Coach Seth Antram and the Cowboys decided to go for the two-point conversion, a daring move that ultimately fell short.

As the final moments ticked away, the clock expired, and the Cowboys found themselves agonizingly close to victory. The scoreboard read 14-13, with Akron East emerging as the victors in a hard-fought battle. Despite Chaney’s valiant efforts, the day would not yield their first win of the season.
