SIR FRANCIS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals are currently 13-7 overall and the 7 seed in the OHSAA Division 3 state baseball playoffs in the Struthers district and they will be preparing to take on the Columbiana Clippers in the sectional round game on Wednesday, May 19th, at Firestone Park in Columbiana. The Cardinals have been enjoying a solid season that has been successful because of the leadership that they get day in and day out from catcher, Ian Francis!

Francis is currently having a great senior campaign as he is hitting .420 (21/50) in eighteen games, with five doubles, two triples, a homer, and 18 RBIs. Not only is Ian’s average very solid, his OBP (on base percentage) is currently at .567 and he is slugging .660. Ian has been such a valuable piece to the Cardinal Mooney baseball program throughout his career, that he has shown just how to play ball the Mooney way and because of that, even when the COVID pandemic occurred, his teammates all knew to look for him for leadership and guidance to see how to go about navigating such a difficult time.

Francis has been able to showcase his baseball talents and leadership qualities for Cardinal Mooney all season long and because of that ability to lead by example on and off the diamond, colleges have been chomping at the bit to recruit him and add them to their programs. Throughout the entire recruiting process, Ian has been able to take a step back, enjoy it all, and has committed to Youngstown State University where he will continue to catch for the Penguins!

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, was able to sit down and catch up with Ian this week to discuss his baseball career, what he expects from the Cardinals on Wednesday against a tough Clippers squad, what his thoughts are about playing ball at the next level at YSU, a rapid-fire question session to see what makes Ian the player he is today, and so much more!

HEADED HOME: EAST GOLDEN BEARS BASEBALL PREVIEW

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – East Golden Bears head coach, Jason Ray, couldn’t be more excited about the season this year. The Golden Bears have ten seniors returning back this year and a couple of the guys are even being looked at to compete at the next level. Coach Ray talked about how proud he is of his staff and his players for putting in the hard work the last two years. Coach spoke about the challenge this past year coaching inside of an inner city school, with COVID, school has been online only and it has been tough to see the potential baseball players face to face. To no fault of the school, he looks to the positives that there is a season this year and he has ten seniors to send out playing a game they all love. Coach Ray expects to compete every game and his players are ready for the challenge this season.

HEADED HOME: CHANEY COWGIRLS SOFTBALL PREVIEW

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Jessica Gavin is the Chaney Cowgirls softball head coach. Key returners are Mae, Bowman, Robinson, and Sharp. Coach Gavin is looking for these players to help build a foundation to the squad this upcoming season. Limited experience and challenges with school only coming back just recently. School sessions are part time due to Youngstown City rules, Mondays and Fridays only as of right now. It was tough to build the program when you aren’t able to see the kids and speak to them on a day to day basis. Covid hit everyone hard the past year and Chaney is no different in that regard. Chaney would have had a JV program in 2020, but with players graduating and no classes until recently it’s unlikely for the program to have a JV team this year. Coach Jessica Gavin is an alumni here at Chaney High School and was also on the last team before the school closed down in 2009. She was a part of bringing the program back just 2 years ago. Coach Gavin is determined to keep growing and completely dedicated to reviving this program to glory. Coach Gavin talked about goals and its real clear teaching and getting the girls excited about playing softball is the clear goal here at Chaney.

HEADED HOME: CARDINAL MOONEY CARDINALS BASEBALL PREVIEW

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals are led by head coach Al Franceschelli. Key returning starter for Mooney is Ethan Shaw and standout short stop headed to play at the next level to Gardner Webb after this season. Coach Al talked a little about the  struggle covid and how he is holding practices is very interesting. He calls it POD practices where he splits his team up into outfielders, infielders and pitchers. Mooney has held different times for these POD’s. Coach Al is doing everything he can to keep his players safe and to make sure they get the opportunity to play this year. He also thanked his players, parents and coaches for this stressful time with practices. Hopefully it will pay off for Cardinal Mooney as they have high hopes in winning the steel valley and a long push into the postseason.

HEADED HOME: URSULINE FIGHTING IRISH BASEBALL PREVIEW

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Irish are coming off a heavy senior driven class a year ago as head coach, Matt Weymer looks to lead this year’s squad onto the diamond at the end of the month!

Coach Weymer is looking to “re-stack the deck” after losing six starters from a year ago. One key starter returning is Brady Shannon, who recently committed to the University of Central Florida. Coach Weymer will look to lean on Brady in multiple ways this year, whether its playing multiple positions, multiple spots in the batting order, or for leadership throughout the season. Jonah Kirchner is another returner that Coach Weymer is excited about as he will handle a lot of pitching opportunities this season. Two new faces to look out for on the diamond this year will be middle infielder, Luca Ricchiuti, and the first baseman/pitcher Drew Kirila.

The standard at Ursuline is always high and Coach Matt Weymer always expects the most from his team as he is known to set the bar pretty high. For Ursuline, it is all about the tournament, Coach Weymer scheduled certain teams to push these young men, so they can be ready for anything that might be thrown their way during the OHSAA state baseball tournament at the end of the season!
