CARDS LEAVE A BLANK SPACE FOR HOWLAND

HOWLAND, OH- Tuesday turned out to be quite the showcase for the Canfield Cardinals as they secured a tight 2-0 win over Howland, thanks largely to the surprising firepower from the bottom of their lineup. Enzo Cocca, Dylan Mancini, and Logan Patellis stepped up big time, knocking five of the team’s eight hits between them. Their effort at the plate was crucial, with one run scored and one RBI contributing directly to the win.

The game was a pitcher’s duel through and through. Canfield’s pitchers combined for a total of four strikeouts, slightly edging out Howland’s tally of three.

The Cardinals got things rolling in the third inning when Ryan Weibling executed a perfect sacrifice bunt that brought in the first run of the game. It was a small play that made a big difference, setting the tone for the rest of the matchup.

Michael Patellis was the standout performer on the mound for Canfield, tossing a complete game shutout. He allowed just three hits across seven innings and matched his striking out with pinpoint accuracy, issuing no walks. His counterpart, Ray, also went the distance for Howland, giving up two runs on eight hits, but ultimately took the loss in this tight contest.

Mancini and Patellis were particularly effective, hitting back-to-back and each bagging two hits to keep the pressure on Howland’s defense. Weibling, alongside Mancini, was responsible for driving in the runs that sealed the deal for Canfield.

Defensively, both teams were on their game, with Canfield turning two double plays and Howland managing one. Mancini wasn’t just a star with the bat; he also led his team defensively, involved in the most plays. Howland’s Biggin, meanwhile, was the busiest in the field for his team, handling six chances cleanly.

Looking ahead, the Cardinals are set to host Ursuline this Thursday. If they can carry over the solid pitching and timely hitting from Tuesday, they’ll be in good shape to keep their winning streak alive.

TIGERS FEELING GOOD AT THE PLATE

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- What a game on the softball diamond! Springfield  came out swinging and didn’t let up, taking down Sebring with a commanding 19-3 victory. Gracie Maldonado was the standout, knocking three hits in five at-bats, including some clutch singles that fueled their offense.

The Tigers roared right out of the gate, with Olivia Allen setting the tone with a double in the first to get them on the board. Sebring managed to tie it up briefly, but Springfield wasn’t having any of that. They surged ahead in the second, courtesy of hits from Vanessa Nalevanko and Maldonado.

But the real fireworks came in the fifth inning. Springfield exploded for a whopping 11 runs, with Maldonado, Hannah Stoufer, and Mariah Jones leading the charge with their timely hits. Errors from McKinley added fuel to the fire, and Springfield capitalized on every opportunity.

Sebring had some bright spots too, with players like Bella Threet and Davianna Bower contributing hits, but in the end, it was Springfield’s day to shine.

CARDINALS STRIKE FIRST AND NEVER LOOK BACK

By Ty Bartell

CANFIELD OH-  Another premier matchup inside the All American Conference (AAC) between a couple of one loss teams took place at McCune Field #7 on Monday night between The Howland Tigers and Canfield Cardinals softball teams! After both teams dropped their opening game of the season, they both had yet to taste defeat again, setting up a collision course between them.

Canfield started the game on the right foot, after Malena Toth stranded a pair of Tigers on in the first with a pair of back-to-back strikeouts, The Cardinals came right out in the bottom of the first and jumped on Howland. Leading things off, Marina Koenig blasted a solo home run to center field to lead off the game and give Canfield the early 1-0 advantage. Not done there, nine Cardinals would bat in the inning as they would compile a seven hit, four run top of the first, taking the 4-0 lead against The Tigers.

Both Malena Toth from Canfield and Brooke Tatar from Howland would effectively shut all offense down in the coming innings with both pitchers pitching around baserunners. However, Toth dealt with a bit of traffic, but she was riding cruise control through all of it, stranding multiple baserunners in the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the third.

The top of the seventh had looked like Howland would finally breakthrough, after loading the bases again, The Tigers were able to draw two consecutive walks to put two runs on the board, cutting the lead to 4-2 Canfield with Howland having the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. But once again, Toth found the ice in her veins to draw the slow roller to first for Kalina to step on the bag. Ballgame!

Player of the Game honors went to both Malena Toth and Jenna Triveri for Canfield as Toth was special in showcasing her ability to battle, even when traffic was on base, as the Buffalo commit is looking as strong as ever at the midway point of the season. While Triveri amassed three hits in the game, as last year’s YSN Co-Freshman of the year continues to set the tone at the top of The Cardinals lineup.

Canfield (9-1) has now won nine straight ball games and are keeping pace to claim a second consecutive AAC crown. Meanwhile, Howland (5-2) will look to gear up for the rematch against Canfield at Howland on Tuesday, April 16th with a 5 p.m. first pitch.
