Luke’s story is all too familiar in America these days.  A superstar athlete with his life in front of him, after a successful college football career at Kent State University, Luke was signed as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints following the 2014 NFL Draft.  However, Luke had suffered two serious injuries in his college years to which he was prescribed opiate pain medication as he recovered.  By the time he made it to training camp, he was addicted.  Luke’s pain pill dependency eventually led him to an addiction to heroin, and it was there he met rock bottom.

Today, with more than two years sober, Luke works as an advocate in the field of addiction recovery. He travels the country speaking at schools, prisons, and community events, where he shares his inspirational story, helping those who are still struggling to find the help they so desperately need.  Luke is one of the many faces of addiction in America today. He could be your brother, your son, or your next door neighbor. The disease has left almost no one untouched. Luke is also the face of recovery. As the opioid epidemic continues to ravage the nation, it is paramount that those who are struggling see that recovery is possible. There is a way out. Luke shares his story openly in hopes of helping others.

In this edition of FCA: PRAISE UP, Tim Figley sits down with Luke to discuss his path, and how he was able to use his faith to fight back against addiction.

For anybody who has ever had the privilege to meet East Palestine’s Abel Figley, you know his personality is contagious.  A big frame of a young man who is built like a tank yet seems to be always joyful and smiling.  His joy for his friends, teammates, and community is immediately noticeable from the jump.  He quickly became one of the fan favorite’s in East Palestine with his hand-shake rituals and sniper-like shooting ability from beyond the arc.  Case in point: Figley drained 7 three-pointers in a game against Southern Local en route to 23 points, and a nod for the YSN-Baird Brothers Big Dogs of the Valley Nomination in Week 12.

However, the glory doesn’t always come easy for Abel, as his hard work and determination alongside his work-ethic have cleared a path for playing time alongside his teammates.  What’s more encouraging is the role model he is to the underclassmen and younger generations of Bulldogs.  If you’re at an EP event, you don’t have to look very far to find Abel.  He’s the guy in the front row cheering the loudest for his school, surrounded by his friends following his lead.

YSN’s Tim Figley caught up for a little family reunion and has this week’s East Palestine Bulldogs Player Profile: THE MOST LIKE-ABEL GUY IN THE ROOM.

An up and down ride in the early-going for the new East Palestine Hoops Commander, but the youth movement has begun in the Dog Pound.  Coach Bill Stanton is in the heat of EOAC-play, and is taking everybody’s best shot as the league’s up-and-comer.

YSN’s Tim Figley sat down to discuss the progress in Bulldog Country, as well as what fans and alumni may or may not see that makes up the DNA of this year’s team.

All that and more on this week’s East Palestine Basketball Coach’s Corner with Bill Stanton (EP 2)
