WASHINGTON, PA- Youngstown defeated Vienna, Austria 10-0 on Saturday as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Braden Gebhardt induced a groundout from Alexander Resel to finish off the game. Youngstown, OH secured the victory thanks to six runs in the sixth inning. Tyler Staub, Andrew Kirkpatrick, and Colten Shaffer all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Youngstown, OH got things started in the first inning. Brady Shannon singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Youngstown, OH scored six runs in the sixth inning. Youngstown’s big inning was driven by a walk by Tyler Staub, a single by Colten Shaffer, and an error on a ball put in play by Andrew Kirkpatrick. A single by Levin Heinzle in the third inning was a positive for Vienna, Austria.
Colten Shaffer pitched Youngstown to victory. He allowed one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out four and walking zero. Joe Roth and Braden Gebhardt entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Eoghan McGarry took the loss for Austria. He surrendered five runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out five and walking zero.
Youngstown tallied 11 hits in the game. Colten Shaffer, Andrew Kirkpatrick, and Brady Shannon all collected multiple hits for Youngstown. Colten Shaffer went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Youngstown in hits. AJ Havrilla also drove in 2 RBI in the victory.
Team Youngstown will now wait two days and watch the tournament from the winner’s bracket in anticipation for their game Monday evening at 5:30. Colten Shaffer will be eligible to pitch again under the pitch count rules by Pony League.
